in the Incomming directory (the queue has not been processed for a looong

You can find the package on my machine (here in Europe, sorry):

in the filter I am using and print with lp the output file it works.

Hi,

your error seems to happen with old versions of gs-aladdin
(the problems happen when gs is execuder with user=root or group=root
AND the output is sent to the stdout).

Which version are you using?

You could consider to install gs-aladdin 5.03-1 (in hamm); this requires
a libc6 system however...

Otherwise you can try to modify your filter file as follows: replace
 # PostScript
 0 %! filter /usr/bin/gs -q -dSAFER -dNOPAUSE -r300
 -sDEVICE=ljet4 -sOutputFile=- -
with;

# Postscript
0 %! filter /usr/bin/gs -q -dSAFER -dNOPAUSE -r300
 -sDEVIC=ljet4 -sOutputFile=\|cat 13 - 31 12

Anybody has any clue. Of course I can keep working like that but a) can't
print through application b) it is not very elegant since after the gs
works I get a GS prompt and have to type quit to continue with the lp
 command.

The GS promt can be avoided by adding -c quit at the end of the gs command,
like in:

gs -q -dSEFAR -dNOPAUSE -sDEVICE=your_device -sOutputFIle=tmp_file \
you_file.ps -c quit

 1. What is the precise incantation to ask Ghostscript to print a

You could consider to install magicfilter:

: Magicfilter is a customizable, extensible automatic printer filter. It uses
: its own magic database (a la file(1)) to decide how to print out an given
: entry.

So, if you print a PS file (i.e., a file starting with %!) via lpr,
it automatically calls gs with thje right parameters.

I tried something like
   gs -sDEVICE=ljet4 -sOutputFile=/dev/lp1 foo.ps
but I only get this:

 Loading NimbusMonL-Regu font from
 /usr/lib/ghostscript/fonts/n022003l.pfb... 1750128 432798 1300076 11891

Try something like
  gs -sDEVICE=ljet4 -dNOPAUSE -q -sOutputFile=/dev/lp1 -c quit
or, even better,
  gs -sDEVICE=ljet4 -dNOPAUSE -q -sOutputFile=\|lpr -c quit

-dNOPAUSE: gs does not stop after each page
 -q: suppresses some messages like
-c quit: automatically exits at the end of the job
-sOutputFile=\|program: sends the output to program using a pipe

Re: printer trouble

1997-11-10 Thread Marco Pistore
On Fri, 7 Nov 1997, E.L. Meijer (Eric) wrote:

 Hello everyone,

Hi!

I recently got a problem with a printer filter used by lpr. The filter
is used for a HP Deskjet 870 cxi, and used to work properly on this
machine, and still does on other machines:

 The princap entry is [OMITTED]

 The filter /etc/filters/filter870.ps looks like:

 #!/bin/sh

 /usr/bin/gs -sDEVICE=cdj550 \
 -q \
 -r300x300 \
 -sPAPERSIZE=a4 \
 -dNOPAUSE \
 -dSAFER \
 -sOutputFile=- \
 - | \
 lpr -Php870raw

hp870raw is a remote printer. The problem might be caused by the
fact that gs was recently replaced with Alladin-gs, version 4.03-7. If
I run `lpr -Pcol1 bla.ps', I see with ps -eaxfwww that gs is run with
 the following arguments:
 /usr/bin/gs -sDEVICE=lvga256 -sDEVICE=cdj550 -q -r300x300 -sPAPERSIZE=a4 ...
  ^^^
It doesn't stop, and nothing gets printed.

Now who or what put -sDEVICE=lvga256 there? I printed the environment
from the filter, and did not see a GS_DEVICE variable. I tried to set
the GS_DEVICE variable in the filter, but it didn't help.

It is gs that put -sDEVICE=lvga256 there! In fact, /usr/bin/gs is not
the real program, it is just a wrapper, which, in particular,
adds the parameter above as an then calls /usr/bin.gs.main, whihc
is the real program. The parameter is added when gs thinks that the
program is running outside X11, so that the svga device is used as the
default one (if the fprogram is running under X11, the X device is the
default one).

In any case, the -sDEVICE=cdj550 overwrites the default device, so this
is not the cause of the problem.

 Even more
mysterious, if I run `filter870.ps bla.ps', it works correctly!

However, this should not work if you execute the script as root
(In fact i think that the problem occurs since your filter is executed
with root permissions).

If gs is executed with superuser permissions, it tries to initialize the
svga library and this produces garbage messages on the stdout
something like Svga libraries version xxx.yyy, using virtual console #7;
these messages are sent to the printer, which gets confused and does not
print correctly.

To see if this is the cause of the problem, you can execute
   filter870.ps bla.ps
as root: it should NOT print correctly.

Solutions:

1) It is dangerous to execute gs with root privileges (the file
/usr/doc/gs/README.something should explain why), so you should
modify (or change) your lpr program, so that the filter are called
without root permissions.

2) You can move to a more recent version of gs-aladdin (gs-aladding 5.03
should work correctly; unfortunately i have a lot a problems to uplopad it;
for the moment, you can find the package at
http://www.di.unipi.it/~pistore/gs-aladdin_5.03-0.99_i386.deb

3) You can modify the filter, so that it looks like

#!/bin/sh

/usr/bin/gs -sDEVICE=cdj550 \
-q \
-r300x300 \
-sPAPERSIZE=a4 \
-dNOPAUSE \
-dSAFER \
-sOutputFile=\|cat 13 \
- \
31 12 | \
lpr -Php870raw

In this way, the real output of gs is not confused with the garbage
output of the svgalibs.

(In the case of your filter, it can also be rewritten as follows:

#!/bin/sh

/usr/bin/gs -sDEVICE=cdj550 \
-q \
-r300x300 \
-sPAPERSIZE=a4 \
-dNOPAUSE \
-dSAFER \
-sOutputFile=\|lpr -Php870 \
- 12

however some other filters require that the output of gs is sent on
stdout.)

Hopefully this will solve your problems...

Ciao,

Marco

Hi,

first of all, thank you very much for your experiments!

Some problems with pdf files have been solved in the new version of
gs-aladdin (5.03).

I am trying to upload a libc5 version of this package since yesterday,
but there are problems with master.debian.org (the libc6 version
has been uploaded some weeks ago).

If you want, you can download the package from
  http://www.di.unipi.it/~pistore/gs-aladdin_5.03-0.99_i386.deb

I'd be very grateful if you could test the new package with your file
and printer.

Thank you,

 Okay, so I notice that `non-free' has gs-aladdin 4.03-7.

gs-aladdin 5.03-1 is available in unstable, but lists *no* related

I downloaded it to find it needs:

  libc6, libjpegg6a, libpaperg (= 1.0.3-4), libpng0g, svgalibg1,

 So it's based on libc6...

I presume I'm not the first to need Aladdin Ghostscript 5.03 to drive
a recent printer. Should I just get the sources and install them
over Debian's installed files? Do I need anything else? Will I screw
up my Debian 1.3 system if I do so?

Hi,

i am the maintainer of gs-aladdin. I understand that a libc5 version of
gs-aladdin 5.03 is urgently required. Unfortulnately it is quite difficult
(at least for me) to produce it working on a libc6 system.
This week-end i went home and installed Debian 1.3 on my old computer,
so i was able to obtain a libc5 gs-aladdin 5.03! (I'll upload it

I am sorry for the delay of my answer, but i did not read the

My problem is that whenever I issue the gs command to print something

(before the blank one) always looks like the last line of print has been
 cut off by
about a fraction of a millimeter.

My theory is that the papersize used by either program is incompatible. I
 believe gs
is using what it calls letter defined as 8.5x11 and a2ps is using
 something with some
code which I can't remember but which looks like an ISO standard ... or
 something.

Hi, i am the maintainer of gs-aladdin.
Both gs-aladdin and a2ps use the libpaper library to set the papersize
(in brief: they use the paper which appears in /etc/papersize), so
the papersizes should be compatible. (Are you using old versions
of the packages?)

Anyway, you can select the papersize for gs-aladdin with
option -sPAPERSIZE=a_known_paper_size, e.g.,
  gs -sPAPERSIZE=a4 -sDEVICE=lj_something test.gs
or with the options -sDEVICEWIDTHPOINTS=xxx and -sDEVICEHEIGHTPOINTS=yyy
(probably there is also an option to select the papersize for a2ps,
but it is not installed here...)

You could also prove to redirect the output of a2ps to a file
and to use ghostview to check if it looks correctly.

Thanks,

Marco
