Hi Today i made an update on my system, the onluy problem is that I forgot that unstable now means unstable... :( After the upgrade I didn't notice anything bad but now i was going to run dselect and : dselect: error in loading shared libraries /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.2.8: undefined symbol: __register_frame_info And the same for apt-get (at least dpkg works :)) I've looked arround to see if I could understand what is causing this so that i could replace the packages with some from slink or hamm but wasn't able so i include a strace of apt-get (output) and a list of the packages that I have installed. A question about bridges...
Hi Everyone I have a problema involving bridges and i would appreciate some help. Here is the situation: I work on a university with building spread arround the city. Every building is linked to the others (this is a generalization) through wireless conections using Wavelan in a start shaped manner. There is one building wich is an exception because it is linked with another building and the latter is linked with the others. Now the real problem. We need th have on pc on each building working as a bridge. both building share the same network (lets say it's network zzz.xxx.ccc.0). I'm trying to configure both pc's as follows eth0 (network card) zzz.xxx.ccc.vvv netmask 255.255.255.255 route add -net zzz.xxx.ccc.0 dev eth0 ifconfig promisc eth0 eth1(the wavelan card) - I've tryed several here and this is where i need help because i cant find any ip that works. Chris bridge howto mentions that we should use the same configuation for eth1 as for lo but i was'n able to get it working) no routes for this one ifconfig promisc eth1 brcfg -enable Everything should work now but it doesn't. Does anyone know how to solve this? Thanks P.S. Don't forget that this is a situation where both pc's are bridges and the communication between them is made through wavelan (eth1) Thank you! Re: About realplayer
one possibility- from: http://service.real.com/help/player/unix3.0/upgrade.html When you upgrade your Web browser, you may lose the configuration information for RealAudio Player. Refer to Quick Start for detailed instructions for configuring Netscape Navigator 2.0 and 3.0. To restore the configuration information: 1.Change directories to the raplayer directory. 2.Type: cat Mailcap $HOME/.mailcap This appends the mailcap file distributed with the RealAudio Player to the .mailcap file in your home directory. 3.Type: cat Mime.types $HOME/.mime.types This appends the Mime.types file distributed with the RealAudio Player to the .mime.types files in your home directory. 4.Exit your web browser and restart it to load the new configuration information. But i was trying to use it as a standalone program... I really haven't tryed hard with the browser... Thanks! Re: About realplayer
This seems to be the error message that rvplayer gives in response to just about every difficulty---very unhelpful. Yes! When I had this problem (or at least a problem that resulted in the same error-message), it turned out to be because rvplayer couldn't find the relevant libraries where it itself had installed them. What I did was to figure out which shared libraries the program depended on (using the ldd command). I saw that it knew how to find those libraries, and that they were in /usr/lib. When I made symbolic links from /usr/lib/libra* to the various libraries that rvplayer had itself installed in /usr/local/rvplayer5.0/, everything worked (well ... after I changed the permissions on /dev/dsp, everything worked). What permissions did you give it (/dev/dsp) ? Mario Filipe [EMAIL PROTECTED] - http://neptuno.sc.uevora.pt/~mjnf | Agora bilingue (PT e EN) - Now bilingual (PT and EN)
Re: About realplayer
I had similar problems when I installed it, and I spent quite a while figuring the problem out. I finally concluded the the major problem is their insistance on calling them shared library files. That implies that they are the same as the system shared library files, but it appears the program doesn't get them from the operating system, so you MUST tell the program exactly where they are located. How do you do that ? Mario Filipe [EMAIL PROTECTED] - http://neptuno.sc.uevora.pt/~mjnf | Agora bilingue (PT e EN) - Now bilingual (PT and EN)

Re: Was the release of Debian 2.0 put on Linux Announce?
makes sense...the more upstream developers, the more exposure debian gets lets face it...when you look around and see Linux Software the first name you see is RedHat and the first package format (not counting tarball) is RPM... And thats the kind of stuff that gives them real presense I've been following this discussion and as such I decided to add my own experience to it. Last year i got my Computer Science degree. In the Univ. we used linux (i think it was slackware). I used to say to my linux fanatic friends linux sucks! Windows is good!. I once had to install linux on my girlfriends computer and i installed red hat. THe installation went ok for a windows fanatic like me. To end the degree i had to make a large project. One of the requesites that i was given was that i had to work with linux (Oh no! i thought). During the first times i had lots and lots of hard fights with debian and if it wasn't for this list i don't know what i would have done. What does all this means. It means that IMHO the natural path for the usesr is windows (until they get tyred of all the reboot's and start looking elsewhere), then they find linux (and they with red-hat, Suse or Caldera, but more red-hat) then they start to see the shortcomings (i for instance removed some packages that i didn't need in my girlfriend's pc just to find out that the whole system was lost! Didn't even reboot)! And this is when they start looking for sothing else and come to debian! Of course some peopledie during the walk (windows fanatics and rh fanatics) but some survive to see the light. See y'a P.S : btw windows sucks. Debian is good! SCSI woes
Hi Despite the fact that I've been working with linux (for real, in a job) for the past year there are still a few things that i do not handle very well. One of those things is SCSI! And right now i have a server to install with SCSI only disks and the thing doesn't want to work. I'll explain. The server has an asus p2b-d or a p2b-ds agp mainboard. It has an adaptec 7890 SCSI chipset and adaptec 3860 SCSI tranceiver on-board. I've disable the IDE drives on the bios, i've said that the boot devices are SCSI and i've looked into adaptec's configure utility (the one you access with ctrl-a). I've configured one of the hard-drives to be the boot device. When i'm in this utility it tell's me that it's using IRQ 10 and IO D000h. Also the adaptec bios says the following prior to boot: SCSI ID:12 FUJITSU FAST/Ultra-SE harddisk0 SCSI ID:0 TOSHIBA CD-ROM FAST/Ultra-SE SCSI ID:14 FUJITSU FAST/Ultra-SE harddisk1 SCSI ID:15 FUJITSU FAST/Ultra-SE harddisk2 After this the pci bios (?) spits out the following (this is important, see below): 8086 7112 Serial Bus Controller 10 (IRQ) 9005 001F Mass Storage Controller 10 5333 Video Card10 10b7 Network card 11 When booting from the most recent set of disks on hamm everything goes fine until it tell's me this: (it'a a hand trasncript, so forgive for some errors) The first thing is a bunc of WARNING: UNKNOW PCI DEVICE and then it lists 8086, 9005, 10b7. Later it says: md driver 0.35 MAX_MD_DEV=4, MAX_REAL=8 Failed Initialization of WD-7000 SCSI Card! PPA: Unable to initialise controller at 0x378, error 2 (according to the bios on this address there is a parallel port, so this message is realtive to scsi or paralell ports) scsi: 0 hosts scsi: detected total (?) And this is it! My guess is that the kernel that comes with the standard set of disk does not recognize this SCSI controller, but i believe we have a kernel here (on a different machine) who does, so how do I produce my own custom disks (if this is possible of course)? If the above is not possible can someone explain how am i going to install debian on this machine! Thanks very much! Any more information that you need please just ask, as long as it help's me! Where can i get this
Hi Fisrt of all i'm still running BO. I've been trying to compile gnome and I had a few problems. The solution that I was given was as follows : You need a newer version of makeinfo; or more to the point a newer texinfo.tex (which comes with makeinfo). I had thought that distributing a texinfo.tex which matches texi files in the same directory would be enough here... but gtk+ does supply a good one, so I guess not =(O| So where can i find these makeinfo and textinfo.tex ??? According to dpkg -S makeinfo and dpkg -S texinfo.tex we have tetex-bin: /usr/bin/makeinfo tetex-base: /usr/lib/texmf/tex/texinfo/texinfo.tex. So it looks like you need to install tetex-bin and tetex-base. I forgot whether these packages are in bo, but bo certainly does have some type of tex packages. Acording to my system it's in the package textinfo. Wich means i have to upgrade my tex packages, wich brings another question. Dselect says that the tex packages i have are obsolete. should i deinstall them and install the new ones or is there another way to do it? Majordomo 1.94.4

Joey Hess suggested that i looked into bo-[updates/unstable] to see if it was there. It was not. I had tryed to make the package by myself but was having some problems. Joey Hess (once again) suggested i installed debhelper from hamm (althoug i'm using bo). I tryed it but i need a more recent version of file-utils. Got it, build it, installed it, installed debhelper, builded majordomo and installed it. It works. Considering the possibility that there are other users with the same problems i made the .debs available through ftp. You can find them in neptuno.sc.uevora.pt/pub/debian. (If you can't reach it let me know). I would also suggest that the maintainers of bo-update would put the packages there (after checking that they are ok!) What libs to use ???
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hello This is not really a debian problem, but i think that the people here can help me. I need to create a program that shows how much of it's task has been done (in percentage maybe) and what is it doing currently. I could display this with printf's but that would create a scroll effect that i do not want. So my question is if there is any library (for C) that allowa's me to display the whole thing on the same place, without the scrolling efect. I thought that maybe readline or (n)curses would do! I would also apreciate if you could point to the docs of the librarys that you reccomend. Thank you and sorry for the off-topic question, and please cc directly to me. Thanks! Printing to Windows 95
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hi I've looked in the How-to's but i still don't think that things are going to work. First the Printing Howto mentions a mini howto (couldn't find it). Second it mentions smbprint wich I couldn't find in my debian installation! So the questions are : where is the mini-howto ? Where is smbprint ? How do i get this thing working (the hard part has something to do with putting something in the spool directory, etc) BTW : I have a printer on my machine, was working perfectly. Now it doesn't print. I didn't change nothing. This has already happened once but then after a few days it wen't away (started printing fine again), now it's back. If i do cat ... | lpr and then lpq I see some weird stuff there, namely a line saying Unspooler ??? What's this ? Does anyone have a clue about how to solve this ? Thanks. P.S - Please CC to me. Crazy Soundcard
Hello First of all sorry for the long post! Second, the system is 1.3! Now the problem : Here where I work, there are several machines running Debian (from web servers to personal workstations like my own, all pc's, actually there are 2 alphas but those don't matter here), there are also several soundcards laying arrounf without any use. Recently we've tryed to put them functioning but to no avail. I will describe (copy from de sc manual) the internals of it: quote The MED3240/41 PnP Audio Controller is a stereo sound card based on the OPTi 82C924 integrated digital sound controller chip. The MED... is compatible with (...)Sound Blaster Pro, Ad Lib, MPU-401 and Windows Sound Systems (Who cares) (...) Yamaha OPL3 FM Synthesizer technology /quote It also has one of those dedicated CD-ROM interfaces. After reading this we thought that if we included all the modules that it said it was compatible widh. The result was that when booting it stops a bit with a message like initializing sounf system(or something like that) but then nothing... The question. Has anyone ever installed one of these beasts ? What can we try to solve this ? Thanks --- Mario Filipe [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . /usr full !?
Hi I have a question to pose and I hope I will tell you everything you need to help me. I'm running Debian 1.3 (2.0.29). I was running x, pine (and a xterm associated with it), a xterm and netscape 4.04 and an rc5 client, plus apache, postgresql and all the other servers. One minute I had 30 Megs free on /usr the next I had 0. Another strange thing is the results that i get from free : total used free sharedbuffers cached Mem: 31004 30356648 23424228 -/+ buffers:30128420 Swap:32252 2560 29692 9788 I noticed it because i ran xosview and noticed that most of the used memory was on shared. Does anyone have an ideia of what might have happened here ? I'll be willing to give any information (except root password:-) that you need to help me ... hptools and magicfilter
Hi A couple of days ago, I had a HP660C installed on my Linux box. Installed magicfilter, enscripts, lprng,... . First question : I chose to use the 550C filter. Is there any filter more recent than that ? After printing some test pages and seeing that everything was ok i saw that the printer was always printing in high quality. Since most of the work doesn't need that quality i started to think about a way to tell the printer to print in econofast mode. Looking through the debian list mails my colleague found someone (sorry don't remember your name) that mentioned hpset. We asked him about where to get it and got it. Apparently hpset works but I still couldn't get econofast to work. After relooking into hpset docs I saw that they mentioned something about filters and so i tried but to no avail. I'll show you my printcap file, and explain what i was trying to do. Basycally I wanted to have 2 different names for the same printer. One printing in high quality and the other for the lowest quality : My printcap : lp|dj|hpdj660c|HP Deskjet 660C:\ :lp=/dev/printer:sd=/var/spool/lpd/hpdj660c:\ :sh:pw#80:pl#72:px#1440:mx#0:\ :if=/usr/sbin/dj550c-filter:\ :af=/var/log/lp-acct:lf=/var/log/lp-errs: lpecono:\ :lp=/dev/printer:sd=/var/spool/lpd/hpdj660c:\ :sh:pw#80:pl#72:px#1440:mx#0:\ :if=/etc/myfilter:\ :af=/var/log/lp-acct:lf=/var/log/lp-errs: The myfilter file looks #!/bin/sh hpset -o stdout econo /usr/sbin/dj550c-filter I stoped and started the lpd.
