Problem with X-CD-Roast

1998-01-08 Thread Mathieu Guillaume

Hi.

It seems I am unable to launch X-CD-Roast: I always get the message
Can't initialize the Tix extension.

I have the xcdroast_0.96-1 and the tix41_4.1.0.6-1 packages installed.
It's the first time I use either one, so I don't know if my problem is
specific to those versions.

Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong ?

Re: xdm configuration

1997-07-29 Thread Mathieu Guillaume

I had an identical experience setting up my 1.3 system: I chose not to
enable xdm until after I had hand-tested my X config. Then when I tried
to start it manually, it failed in the manner that you describe.

You must run xbase-configure after you modify the config file,
reinstalling everything is sure a waste of time :)

xserver_s3v

1997-04-23 Thread Mathieu Guillaume

I'm using the lastest xserver_s3v from hamm with a Diamond Stealth 3D 2000
(S3 virge chipset). I can't get it to work in 16 bpp mode with a screen
size of 1024x768.

Supposedly, that's because the former s3v specs only allowed a maximum
rate of 80MHz in 16 bpp mode.

Since then, S3 relaxed the specs to allow a rate of 94.5MHz in this mode,
so I wondered if a package would soon come which would allow this. If not,
is there anything I can do to make it work without having to recompile the
whole server ?

What about just making a little program that listens on port 80 and
replies with your CGI when asked for something ? That would be a
solution, if you want anybody to be able to run this script. If you want
something more elaborate, just make this program a bit more elaborate
(something that replies only if queried a specified document, or a
password system).
I *think* it should work all right, but then I'm no specialist.

New login logs everybody

1997-01-10 Thread Mathieu GUILLAUME

Hi. It seems the latest login package now puts every login process in
/var/log/auth.log, instead of the former root logins, su and login
failures. Is there any way to revert to the former behavior without
having to revert to the former package ? If so , which one ?

I think you should be able to do that with sed : sed s/X/Y filename
replaces all Xs with Ys in the file 'filename'. I dunno if it takes * as
an argument, but if it doesn't you should still be able to do it using
xargs.

Re: Can't type eight-bit characters in tcsh_6.06-9

: work? Did anyone experience the same problem I had?

Seems to me it's the same kind of problem I'm having. My LANG
environment variable is set to fr_FR, everything worked fine before, but
I have not changed anything to my keyboard or font configuration. As a
matter of fact, I can type and see letters with accents everywhere
except at the tcsh prompt. BUT, according to tcsh itself, it's
configured with the 8bits and nls options in. If I quickly switch to zsh
for instance, my accents appear automagically without me changing
anything. I guess it's a bug somewhere in this version of the package.
So let's all just yell MAINTAINEER :)
Give me back my accents :)

Problems with some packages

1996-12-08 Thread Mathieu GUILLAUME
Hi everybody.

I've recently encountered two problems while using dselect :
- gs-aladdin keeps downgrading after upgrading (in this case, it
upgrades to 4.03-7 and almost imediately reverts to 4.03-6).
- In the last batch of twenty or so packages I upgraded, one changed the
files I had in /etc/init.d without asking. I've no idea which package
did that, but I'm sure I never agreed to anything asking me that. The
most obvious results were my personal keymap not being loaded at boot
time, and the time reverting to GMT (both thing were done in
  /etc/init.d/boot).

Check that xdm is enabled in /etc/X11/config. You should not have the lines:
no-start-xdm
no-xdm-start-server
I don't know exactly what each line does, but if you put the lines
start-xdm
xdm-start-server
in /etc/X11/config, xdm will start at boot time (you can switch to a VT and end
it with /etc/init.d/xdm stop at any time).
I didn't have to modify the Xservers file.
You may want to add xbanner in your /etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0 file, to get
a pretty background, but more important, xscreensaver.

GhostScript and Magicfilter

1996-10-29 Thread Mathieu GUILLAUME

Since the last version of GhostScript was included in the distribution,
I can't use magicfilter to automagically print my PostScript files. The
reason seems to be : ghostscript now uses SVGAlib. To get I/O
permissions for a 'base' user, it should then be set to +s I believe. Is
that safe to do ? Will it solve my magicfilter problem ?
