jessie: USB Optical mouse not powered after resume

2015-05-27 Thread Mathieu Malaterre
[CC me please]

Hi folks,

I am trying to diagnose why my USB mouse wont get powered up (DELL
Optical mouse) after resume. It used to work just fine on wheezy
(amd64).

Here is what dmesg says after resume:

[ 5022.967737] [drm] Enabling RC6 states: RC6 on, RC6p off, RC6pp off
[ 5022.979881] usb 4-1.3: new low-speed USB device number 5 using ehci-pci

If I unplug/re-plug the mouse:

usb-:00:1d.0-1.3/input0

Then everything is back to normal.

For reference, I am using a DELL Vostro 3750, jessie amd64 (uptodate).
USB Mouse is using the USB 2.0 port (not one of the USB 3.0 port).

Thanks,

Dear all,

I am trying to diagnose why my wifi connection is so bad from my
current laptop. If I reboot into windows 7 (default OS when shipped)
everything is working nicely.

I followed [*] and the output is given at:

I do not see anything abvious from the log file. Does anyone see any
obvious mistake (misconfiguration) I could have ?

 1999 (If I remember correctly).
So I started with kernel 3.0.0. Now I've switched to 3.1 (well, I've
mistaken once more - the tested

I choose to switch back to debian/stable after a broken update in testing.

You can try to upgrade your kernel.

What for ? d-i went smoothly until the end.

is there a way to skip the usb step from the grub menu ?

ACPI I/O resource conflicts with ACPI region SMBI

2011-10-03 Thread Mathieu Malaterre
Dear all,

I am trying to install a debian stable on my new DELL Vostro 3750.
the d-i went perfectly fine. However when booting up debian, boots
stops at:

All I could find was people complaining about this message in dmesg,
however in my case, booting simply stops. I cannot go any further.

Does anyone knows what I should try next to get passed this ?

You should really keep windows on your toshiba for the moment. I had

 Hello,

I had to compile the latest upstream kernel sources to make some

 compilation took ~5 hours.

 That's much for testing purposes.

Compilation takes place in a netbook governed by Intel's Atom N455 with 2
GiB of RAM and I would like to reduce the compilation time.

I'm using the same .config file I have for the current Debian stock
kernel (to avoid missing some modules I may need) and just added
CONFIG_MATOM=y but it takes almost the same time.

I don't need nothing special, just to be able to boot the system, test
the staging drivers and then remove/compile a new kernel again so wasting
the less time in the process would be great :-)

 Any trick?

 Greetings,

re-installing grub (lvm)

2011-06-05 Thread Mathieu Malaterre
Hi all,

After installing Windows 7, I lost my grub installation. I would
like to repair my grub installation. I prepared a bootable USB key
with a squeeze netinst iso. I can boot into 'rescue mode'. After
network autoconfiguration I can go to a shell, but when I type:

# grub-installer /dev/sda

It reports:

chroot: can't change root directory to /dev/sda: Not a directory

Disk is simply: Win7 as primary partitation and the second one is
simply an LVM with /root, /home, / and swap (in this order).

Thanks a bunch !

use amd64 if you want 64bit computing or i386 if you want to stick with

Actually I never understood why people would want to install i386 when
amd64 is possible. Since from amd64 you can still run x86 code ... but
not the other way around. Is there a drawback when installing an amd64

 Hello,

I just installed Squeeze on several HP DL360 G6 servers and it works fine.
Each of these servers has the P410i controller with two physical disks
configured in a RAID 1 mirror.  Debian uses the built-in cciss driver and
maps the RAID volume to /dev/cciss/c0d0.  If you don't have a RAID volume
set up, I would imagine it would map the first physical drive to
/dev/cciss/c0d0, the next to /dev/cciss/c0d1, etc.

One quick note, you will need the firmware for the network hardware in these
 machines.  Download this file:

 ttp://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/pool/non-free/f/firmware-nonfree/firmware-bnx2_0.28_all.deb

That's one of the reasons I avoid storing contacts on the phone or
phone's SD card and use the SIM. While SIM memory is very limited and
contacts cannot exceed of ~250 (at least with the 128 KiB SIM card it
provides my carrier) I still can transfer the contacts from the SIM to
any smart|mobile phone without any hitch.

I did that too. I convert the single entry 'John Doe / Mobile Phone /
Home Phone' into something like the following entries 'Doe J/Mobile
Phone' 'Doe J/Home Phone'.

 http://www.janerob.com/rob/e72-linux/e72-sync/

Yes this is the link I sent.

 https://libsyncml.opensync.org/wiki/obex-guide

thanks !

It is always a good idea to test these sync tools with the latest
available versions form upstream (if you don't want to install them in
your system, using a LiveCD from whatever distribution and install it
from there can be an option).

Indeed that fixed the issue. I quickly hack an updated package:

http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/l/libsyncml/

This now works fine. I could sync phone entries with nice looking entry name.

Even with LAN access to your SVN server, try a svn-bisect and then
compare it to a git-bisect.

There is no going back to SVN, once you understand the whole

Assuming you followed those steps *exactly* and there were no errors,
remove xorg.conf and retry the 'aticonfig --initial'. BTW, that command
needs root, because it must write a new xorg.conf.

Actually the solution was simply to get the driver from unstable:

It did pulls lot of update xserver-* packages but glxinfo/glxgears are
 working very nicely.

Re: upgrading linux kernel

2011-02-24 Thread Mathieu Malaterre
Just:

apt-get install -t unstable linux-image-2.6.37-1-amd64

This should update your squeeze with the minimum (linux-base will be
upgraded). then reboot, select 2.6.37. You can always select 2.6.32
and then remove linux-image-2.6.37-1-amd64.

 Hi everyone,

I know squeeze has only just been released but it uses kernel 2.6.32
while sid uses 2.6.37. Does anyone know if/when 2.6.37 will become
available in squeeze, or will it probably not be until wheezy gets
 released?

If I take the 2.6.37 package from sid and install it on squeeze, is
that likely to give me any problems? Or would I be better off using
sid, even though it's the testing distribution and this is for a
 production server?

(I want to use the IPVS SIP persistence engine that was only added in 2.6.37)

If it's getting to the point of displaying the banner, but not as far as

Try ssh target /bin/bash or something like ssh target hostname to
see if executing an alternate shell works (in the latter case, you're
executing 'hostname' as your shell which will print target's hostname
and spit your back to your original computer).

 I am making some progress

 $ ssh hpdesk hostname

 Still no login prompt

For anyone interested in the story. All I had to do is remove : .zshrc_history*
There were some junk history files that caused all the above...

Good point. All other users seems ok. Only mine using zsh has this issue.

What command line (exact syntax) are using?

VMware Converter equivalent

2011-02-09 Thread Mathieu Malaterre
Hi all,

I recently bought a laptop with a microsoft windows 7 OEM OS. I
would like to convert into a virtual machine for later use in
VirtualBox.

* I tried using restore DVD, but upon installation within VirtualBox
it keeps on claiming an insane amount of disk space for installation
* I tried using VMWare Converter but the software fails miserably
during conversion (around 1% progress).

Does anyone knows of any other alternatives software to convert a
physical machine to a virtual one ?

Thank you

Yes. Works fine with my macminig4 box.

That is does the media play ok, can you see the contents from another
computer. Is your DVD player/recorder OK with dual layer DVD's

This is somewhat my question: how do I know that ?

 $ apt-cache policy dvd+rw-tools brasero

 dvd+rw-tools:
   Installed: 7.1-6
   Candidate: 7.1-6

Do these versions work with dual layer DVD's?

Again this is my question. Anyway I used dd and I can copy the iso image:

$ dd if=/dev/sr0 of=backup.iso
16386432+0 records in
16386432+0 records out
8389853184 bytes (8.4 GB) copied, 687.9 s, 12.2 MB/s

I'll try next to see if I can burn that iso now.

Thanks

I use Thunderbird with several IMAP accounts, including Gmail. Moving

Just FYI, I finally decided to use thunderbird/icedove ... and it
worked like a charm (well it is *much* faster) ! I do not know why
evolution is so slow (this is the same DSL connection)...

Thunderbird was a blast to configure (assuming you know your gmail
adress...), and the only other configurations I used are described at:

 http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=78892

 eg: browser.cache.memory.capacity mail.server.default.fetch_by_chunks

Just for reference I gave up on icedove/thunderbird, it would simply
sit, do nothing and fill up 38% of my 4Gb memory for downloading a
folder of ~4000 messages.
I gave up on firefox/iceweasel a couple of weeks ago for chromium for
the exact same reason.

I am giving imapsync a try.

Getting the memory used by a process

2010-12-08 Thread Mathieu Malaterre
Hi there,

I am trying to find out the memory used by a process (peak memory
actually). I found the command 'pmap', howeverI cannot find a way to
retrieve the PID of a process when execution time is really short. For
instance, this does not work:

/bin/ls (ps ax | grep ls)

Any other tool, other than pmap to do find that information ? I
would also like to avoid something as heady as valgrind --tool=massif.

Thanks !

multiple interfaces: eth0 wlan0

2010-09-06 Thread Mathieu Malaterre
Hi,

I was not able to find an answer to the following question. So here
it is: how do I know which interfaces is being used by default (wget,
apt-get...) in debian ? Right now both eth0 and wlan0 are up (as
reported by ifconfig)

thanks,

What is your default route?  Any of these:

  $ netstat -nr
  $ route -n
  $ ip route show

Hum... this is bad, it looks like I am using wlan0

Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags MSS Window irtt Iface
192.168.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 wlan0
0.0.0.0 192.168.0.254 0.0.0.0 UG0 0 0 wlan0

192.168.0.0/24 dev wlan0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.0.21
default via 192.168.0.254 dev wlan0

Is there a way to change the default. Otherwise I'll comment out the
wlan0 section in etc/network/interfaces

thanks again,

Mounting cdrom ISO 9660 Extensions: Microsoft Joliet Level 1 / ISOFS: changing to secondary root

2010-08-22 Thread Mathieu Malaterre
Hi there,

I have been experiencing a very bizarre behavior in the last couple
of weeks. I am running a lenny system with kernel 2.6.32 from backport
and for some reason I cannot mount cdrom from the gnome session
anymore.
From the command line, it works after much struggle (*).

  What is odd is:
- DATA CD with ISO 9660 Extensions: RRIP_1991A are fine, no problem
(typically my bootable cdrom of lenny) (3 different cd tested)
- DATA DVD are fine, no problem (3 different dvd tested)
- DATA CD with ISO 9660 Extensions: Microsoft Joliet Level 1 seems to
all have the same symptoms on my machine (4 different cd tested). They
do load perfectly fine on a windows machine.

The only bug that ressemble those symptoms is:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=583949

However I find it hard that so few people would experience that.

Any suggestion ?

zcat should be applied on the whole filesystem, not the first
partition:

zcat boot.img.gz /dev/sdX

which is not:

zcat boot.img.gz /dev/sdX1

I used the simple solution you were previously suggested:

Checking burned image is ok

2010-07-27 Thread Mathieu Malaterre
Hi there,

I am looking for a way to check I did burn my debian installer iso
properly. I am trying:

$ cmp /dev/cdrom debian-505-powerpc-netinst.iso

This works on CD-RW, but it fails on CD-R with the following:

cmp: /dev/cdrom: Input/output error

Has anyone seen this before ? How else could I check the CD-R is
actually properly burned ?

Thanks !

On a recent DELL Opteron I had to use a squeeze installer (kernel

setting XKBLAYOUT to gb in squeeze ?

2010-07-15 Thread Mathieu Malaterre
Hi there,

I am wondering if anyone has been able to setup XKBLAYOUT properly
on debian/squeeze. I am reading

http://wiki.debian.org/XStrikeForce/InputHotplugGuide

  It says:

$ grep -C 3 -i xkb /etc/default/console-setup
- return nothing on my computer.

Reading the file it seems I actually need to change
/etc/default/keyboard instead, so I did:

$ grep -C 3 -i xkb /etc/default/keyboard
# /etc/init.d/hal restart

# The following variables describe your keyboard and can have the same
# values as the XkbModel, XkbLayout, XkbVariant and XkbOptions options
# in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

XKBMODEL=pc105
XKBLAYOUT=gb
XKBVARIANT=
XKBOPTIONS=terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp

# If you don't want to use the XKB layout on the console, you can
# specify an alternative keymap. Make sure it will be accessible
# before /usr is mounted.
# KMAP=/etc/console-setup/defkeymap.kmap.gz

As specified, I did rerun the hal deamon:

$ sudo /etc/init.d/hal restart
Restarting Hardware abstraction layer: hald.

$ lshal | grep xkb
- return nothing

If I look at the log file /var/log/Xorg.0.log, I can see something weird:

...
(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device Dell Dell USB Keyboard
(type: KEYBOARD)
(**) Option xkb_rules evdev
(**) Option xkb_model pc104
(**) Option xkb_layout us
...

I also tried :

  dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration

and I explicitely specify dell USB keyboard, it then picks up that my
keyboard is 'gb' style and not 'us', but the change has no effect even
after a gdm restart.

Any advice ?

Thanks,

debian stable + nvidia driver

2010-06-09 Thread Mathieu Malaterre
Hi there,

Has anyone installed a debian stable + nvidia driver recently. I am
stuck with linux kernel 2.6-26, I do not understand exactly what is
going on with backports:

http://packages.debian.org/lenny-backports/linux-headers-2.6-amd64

I even tried moving to the linux image in testing, but udev
apparently changed a lot, so I had to revert the change (I do not
remember the exact error).

Anyway, I went back to installing a stable 5.0.4 with linux 2.6.26
and installing nvidia-kernel-2.6.26, I discover the driver
173.14.09-5v (stable/non-free) did no support my card (heavy
flickering on any action).

I then tried to compile the nvidia-graphics-drivers on my amd64,
since it now requires ia32-libs (= 20090804) [amd64]. I do not care
about any ia32 stuff, so I simply remove all references to ia32 from
the debian/control file and then compiled it by hand:

  dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot -us -uc

All seems well until depmod exit with a 1 error code. Where can I
see what is going on ? Is there a log ?

Thanks,

Sounds like you may have modified boot-device order in the BIOS after the

when dealing with grub, fstab and the like. Personally, I prefer to use disk
(partition) labels, such as lenny, home, or dumpster.

Where do I do that from the debian installer ? (I used option LVM on
entire disk).

Thanks

 befeore i create bugreports.

Where can i find the latest howto about the nv installation with 3d
 support? (...and dualhead viewport)

I installed nvidia from Debian non-free repo by following these
 instructions:

 http://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers

I think those instructions are deprecated. If you are using current
non-free you have to do something like:

apt-get install nvidia-kernel-dkms

It should automatically build the latest nvidia driver for your running kernel.

That's exactly what I've been wanting for a long time. Though one should
note that in addition to installing that, it is also necessary to install
 nvidia-glx and nvidia-glx-ia32.

On a related note, I manage to shoot myself in the foot by installing
nvidia-glx from stable. Make sure to take exactly the same version.

Affordable big endian machine to run debian

2010-05-26 Thread Mathieu Malaterre
Hi there,

For a toy project I am looking for a big endian machine where I
could run debian on it (of course!). I tried using qemu + a powerpc
image but running a C++ compiler / linker was extraodinarly slow.
G5 is just way to expensive for me. If possible I would like to
avoid having to buy a used machine on ebay. Can I find something in
the range [1000$ - 1500$] ?

Thanks a bunch !

VMWare Player as debian package

2010-03-22 Thread Mathieu Malaterre
Hello,

Has anyone tried to package VMWare-Player as debian package ? I am
not able to find anything up-to-date for things related to vmware. I
am not very incline to run the shell (.bundle) script as root.

Thank you,

Ps: no flame please, I was given a vmware image.

 Hello List,

I plan to implement a parser with respect to a given XSD file:

I do not understand your question since XML is supposed to be 'human
readable' format. However I have recently uploaded a package that
allow opening an XSD file as tree:
