wvdial
I'm trying to connect to my isp using my notebook. I have a zoom pcmcia modem that wvdial recognizes and sets up just fine. When I type wvdial and hit enter it dials...logs in...starts ppp daemon, but after 2-3 seconds it says PPP daemon has died! (exit code = 1) Disconnecting at .. So basically it looks like it has connected. It sounds like it has connected. Then just as I am about to proclaim victory it does the above then tries 5 seconds later and repeats over and over till I Ctrl-C or kill the program. Thanks in advance for any help

RE: Separate list for newbies
I COMPLETELY agree. I am a total newbie, but I fortunately know a friend who has used linux since he was five(many years) and gives me lots of help. Also, I have posted several questions here and have found an overwhelming desire to help, whereas in most newsgoups one would be flamed. Thanks to those who take the time to help. It makes linux a much more desirable environment than other OS's which charge per call for assistance. -Original Message- From: John Foster [SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, May 19, 1999 5:35 PM To: John Bagdanoff Cc: debian-user@lists.debian.org Subject:Re: Separate list for newbies A thought for all who are contemplating a special list for newbies. The more eyes that see a question, the better your chances are for a correct solution. Many of the gurus that answer your questions do not come to this list to simply help out. I'm sure some do, but many (me included) are looking for answers to questions that they have. In the process of scanning the list they see things that they KNOW how to fix and say to themselves well, it will only take a minute to help here, so why not! I appreciate the help available from everyone here and hope it will always be available in such a timely and easy to access format. I also want to point out that most questions can be answered by simply checking the /usr/docs directory on your own system. The problem with that is simple, you may be too new to know where to look in the docs. That is where the experienced users can help. Most of the time they simply tell you where to find your own answers. Believe me that is the best way, as you learn more. Eventually you will find that you tend to answer more questions than you ask, then you are no longer a newbie! I have been enjoying the development of free open source software since 1992 and hope all of you develop a level of experience that will allow you to also help others do the same. I also can tell you that once I have a VREY reliable, Linux, banking package I will remove the 1 remaining Microsoft OS that I have installed. That is becaus I have ALL my needs met via free software. -- John Foster AdVance-Computing Systems [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- Unsubscribe? mail -s unsubscribe [EMAIL PROTECTED] /dev/null
debian viavoice
I was wondering if anyone knew if the the new viavoice for linux that was released with redhat 6 would run on slink or potato?
fujitsu lifebook 280dx
Does anyone have this notebook? I'm trying to run slink and have come pretty far(I'm a new user). I recently posted about the icons in wordperfect looking scrambled. the general suggestion was to change video settings from 24 bit color to 16 or 32. When I changed to any setting other than 24, x would not start. the screen went scrambly and I had to Ctrl Alt Backspace out of there. would updating the kernel to the latest and updating x to the latest be the next logical step? I'm assuming that my video card just isn't being supported very well
zoom faxmodem
has anyone had any experience with the zoom pcmcia modem. The one that costs 99.99 at Best Buy(I'm not sure the model, but I figured a price point would give you an idea.) I'm just wondering if linux will recognize it. My notebook came with an internal modem, but...It is a winmodem..:( please reply to [EMAIL PROTECTED] if you know anything. I'm not sure If i've been correctly added to this list. If it means anything i have a fujitsu lifebook 280dx running slink thank you.
Re: Wordperfect
I've tried the suggestion of changing the color from 24 to others. X will only boot with 24 or 8.
wordperfect
I apologize if this has already been beaten to death, but this is my first post and first few minutes in this newsgroup. I was trying to run wordperfeft 8 on slink. I originally had a library problem which hours of research has fixed. I installed old libraries, libc5, xlib6, and xpm4.7. Wordperfect runs, but the pictures and banners and icons are all scrambled. When it is starting up the banner that is supposed to have a pen on it and say Wordperfect is just a scrambled mess of vertical lines. Once it starts, all of the icons loook the same way. And the window in the corner of screen that stays open to open new documents is scrambled as well. I'm rather new to linux and my friend is telling me to give up on debian and go to redhat. I'd rather hack out solutions. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Matt Kokidko [EMAIL PROTECTED]
