Could the project goals of SEUL be met by Debian somehow? It already is a
stable, robust distribution, and is not going to go away. It also has gotten
easier to install and maintain with recent releases. What if improvements
were made to Debian's install and upgrade facilities to make it even easier,
and/or more documentation was created in the form of useful tutorials for
common procedures -- would this meet SEUL's goals? If so, it would save a
lot of work both for the SEUL team (who would be creating a new distribution
from scratch, which realistically would probably never be as robust as
Debian), and for the Debian project (who would gain the assistance of the
SEUL folks in making Debian easier to install and maintain).

I definitely have to agree with these statements. I think
the last thing a new Linux user needs, is another Linux
distribution to choose from. I know I was a bit
dissappointed with the fragmentation when I started with it
(about 3 months ago). Please take Debian and improve the
installation utilities (I'm a big fan of SGI's 'swmgr'.
Anyone want to write a clone for dpkg?). Maybe move the
documentation into a web-based format (HTML) to make the
current information easier to navigate. Maybe web-based
admin tools?

Did you try reading through the 3-button-mouse howto in
 /usr/doc/HOWTO/mini?

I'd like to thank everyone who answered my request for
information. The fix was easy; hold down button 1 during
boot and set the protocol to MouseSystems... and the
documentation was on my system all along. The more I use
Linux, the more I am amazed at the quality...

Maybe x86 HW isn't that bad after all...

Thankx again.

 Matthew,
The problem with your mouse might not be your mouse, but the way that
it is configured. I have had to jump through all of the mouse hoops a lot
recently to get mine to work. A possible solution is that there might be
a switch on the bottom of the mouse that you can flip, then reboot the
machine, and see if it works. If not, you will have to mess with
XF86Config. If you don't have a switch on the bottom, or if that doesn't
fix the problem, then email this list again, and we'll go from there.

No switches on the mouse and the XF86Config file is bare. I
believe I used XF86Setup and it's various mouse options to
try to get the middle button to work with no luck.

Several Q's

1997-12-10 Thread Matthew Majka
Hi all,

I've got Debian 1.3.1 installed on a PC at home and am having two minor
problems.

This first is that when I run 'xconsole', it returns cannot open
/dev/console.

The second is that 'w', 'who', and 'finger' never displays any users.

Does anyone have any solutions to these problems. If you need more
specific info, please let me know.

Also, can anyone recommend a decent three-button mouse (serial or
ps/2). The middle button on my current mouse doesn't work.

Q: Pointer for libc6 upgrade

1997-11-15 Thread Matthew Majka
Can someone give me a pionter to some info on upgrading a
system to libc6? I'd like to start using XFree86-3.3.1 for
some of it's bug fixes and the new debian packages are libc6
dependent.

Matt

Re: Modem configuration

1997-11-14 Thread Matthew Majka
I just got PPP working a couple days ago at home, so this is
still fresh in my mind. For some reason, the /dev/cu
devices didn't exist (using minicom clued me into this), so
I had to do `cd /dev ; ./MAKEDEV serial-cu` to get started.
After I got the /dev/cu devices, things went very smooth.

Re: amd/automount [Was: nis]

1997-11-06 Thread Matthew Majka
Since we're talking about automounters. I've heard that
there is a version of AutoFS for Linux under development.
I'm wondering if this will take the standard Sun/SGI maps
and support indirect mounts? Anyone have details on AutoFS
and when it will be available?

NFS/NIS support

1997-10-15 Thread Matthew Majka
Hi all,

I very new to Debian (maybe 24 hours) although I have quite
a bit of experience with SGI's and Sun's. I have a few
questions I was hoping someone could answer for me.

1) I've seen that NFS is supported on Debian, but I haven't
seen any mention of an automounter. Is there one?
2) If so, does it support NIS maps?
3) The reason we set this machine up is to become familiar
with what Linux can give us. Management wants to buy cheap
hardware (PeeCee), but we are unwilling to use the cheap
OS that they come with (Windoze). I'm interested in window
manager suggestions. The SGI's use a modified mwm from OSF,
so I know that's not a freebie. Is there one that will give
user's the look and feel of a commercial workstation?

Thanx!

We'll sure try. Always glad to have a new convert :)

I wouldn't call myself a convert (not from commercial
Unix'es anyway). Just a personal quest to eliminate Windoze
wherever I can... ;-)
