The package that held the chanages I wanted was called Extension Manager and Extensions. That file gave me options for the top bar and the bottom bar. Hope this helps. Again I apologize for the previous, I was very uptight over my inability to remember what I need to do. We cannot all recollect all that has gone before. There is very large flexibility as to the Linux display. There are four major desktop environments and several derivatives of them. Some people don't use a DE at all, just a window manager. I use Xfce4 and its own panels, with one panel to the top left and one panel top right, with a third tiny panel just containing an analogue clock. Most configuration can be achieved by right-clicking on a panel then Panel-> Panel Preferences. The size, position and number of panels can be controlled in that way. Launchers can be added to panels, and applications can be added to launchers. Mostly one launcher contains one application. I don't know what display configuration you have, but a good start is to right-click on whatever bars you have, and explore the menus. The main application menu can pretty much always be opened by right-clicking on an empty part of the desktop and choosing Applications. This set of menus, grouped as you say be approximate function, can be edited by a couple of applications, one of which is the Gnome alacarte, which I use. This is not normally installed by default on Debian, but can be installed in the usual way. If you don't already have Gnome or some of its applications, it will probably bring in a distressing list of dependencies. Let us know more about what desktop environment you use, and we can probably give better advice. Unfortunately, while reinstalling can fix many problems fairly easily, it does bring with it the need to rebuild the configurations of many things.

I had a1T drive that has my backup on it. I used Lucky Backup but I cannot figure out how to restore. I read the book and it is confusing. Ouch. Please get started doing some kind of backups. Simple approaches include: 1. Connect a USB drive (flash, HDD, SSD, whatever). Hopefully, the desktop environment will display a pop-up dialog with to mount the USB drive file system and display it in a file manager. Then open another file manager. Drag and drop files from your hard disk drive or solid state drive to the USB drive to back up. Drag them the other way to restore. It helps to create folders with year, month, day-of-month names (e.g. 20240118) on the USB drive, so that you can back up the same file repeatedly and retain older copies. Then put the USB drive off-site, get another USB drive, and continue with backups. Every month or so, swap the on-site and off-site USB drives. 2. If your computer has a CD/DVD/BD burner drive, buy a spindle of blank discs. Look for a CD/DVD/BD burner application via your Start menu (or whatever it is called). Burn important files to an optical disc periodically, and as needed. Keep the burned discs off-site. Another useful strategy is to put your operating system on one HDD/SSD and put your data on a second HDD/SSD. When you need to re-install your operating system, you can shut down, disconnect the data drive SATA cable, boot installer media, and install the operating system. When the new operating system is working, you shutdown, connect the data disk SATA cable, boot, and configure the system to mount the data drive. Did you install a graphical desktop? If so, which one? I installed Gnome for the desk top Okay. What backport package(s) did you require? deb https://ftp.debian.org/debian/ bookworm-backports contrib main non-free non-free-firmware Okay. I now have a system that works but I cannot find any utility to fix the top bar the way I want it. Any hints? If you are using Xfce, right click on a blank area of any panel and choose Panel -> Panel Preferences. This will give you a multi-tab app that you can use to customize all the panels. I use Xfce and am unfamiliar with Gnome. Perhaps another reader who uses the Gnome desktop can provide instructions for customizing the desktop interface. David

Thank you. Now we need to know if you actually need it. Run lspci, and look over the output for likely keywords: wifi, wireless, 802.11, etc. On the laptop I am using right now, I get, among other things: charles@jhegaala:~$ lspci … 03:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8188CE 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter (rev 01) … charles@jhegaala:~$ We need more information on that entry. So in this case, lspci -vv -s 03:00.0 where the 03:00.0 is taken from the line in the first lspci output. The last two lines give us the kernel driver in use, in this case rtl8192ce. So now we look to see what the boot output has to say. As root: root@jhegaala:~# dmesg | grep -i rtl8192ce [516377.908430] rtl8192ce: Chip Version ID: B_CHIP_88C [516377.918406] rtl8192ce: Using firmware rtlwifi/rtl8192cfw.bin [516377.922599] rtl8192ce :03:00.0: firmware: direct-loading firmware rtlwifi/rtl8192cfw.bin [516377.948234] rtl8192ce :03:00.0 wlp3s0: renamed from wlan0 [516399.434298] rtl8192ce: Chip Version ID: B_CHIP_88C … root@jhegaala:~# So now we know that the driver is successfully loading the proper firmware. You may have a line like that, or you may have a line indicating that it tried to load firmware but failed. If it failed, you now at least know the name of the firmware file it wants. This is a Realtek device, your output should look similar.

General question regarding SSD and harddrive
So I have been looking at new computers and most of them come with SSD's but they are so much smaller than my 2 TB computer that I am not sure what is better. I read a couple of pieces on different groups but still am not sure. SSD's are faster but them have a quarter of the room for storage. I don't use my machine for basic stuff and am not a heavy gamer. Any advice about this would be greatly appreciated. Moe

You should now have a working computer. I assume that you are now configuring the operating system, desktop, applications, etc., and restoring your data. Once you reach stability, it would be good to take an image of the OS drive. If and when you suffer another disaster, restoring an image is much faster and more reliable than installing, configuring, and restoring from scratch. Clonezilla is the obvious choice: https://clonezilla.org/ While drag-and-drop to a USB HDD is the KISS backup method, there is a fundamental issue: what happens the next time you backup? If you overwrite/delete the previous backup set, then you only have one backup of each file. If you make another complete backup set, then you fill up your backup media quickly. There are more efficient backup solutions available. You should pick one and implement it: https://wiki.debian.org/BackupAndRecovery Burning data to optical media (archiving) with Brasero is still a good idea. Over time, the media containing your images and backups (e.g. USB HDD) will fill up and you will need to delete older images and backups to make room for new images and backups. Archives are how you keep data indefinitely. Finally, get another USB HDD. Keep one connected to your computer, keep one off-site, and rotate them periodically. When one fails, you will still have images and backups. David

Some USB ports can be used as display ports, but the opposite won't work. There are no USB to HDMI adapters for your use case. Is your USB hub self-powered (ie. via a power adapter), or is it only using USB ? Same for the seagate, does it only have a USB port, no power adapter ? Also, can't you remove the USB hub to plug the Seagate directly to the computer ? Do you have another computer and/or disk drive ? Re: I need help with my var partition.
Unfortunately I cannot install anything. I used the command line and the app but neither of them will work. I have no idea what to do next. I used su and sudo first. It just keeps saying it cannot connect with the base from which I get updates, etc. I used the reinstall on brasero and it just said that it was up to date. I am so confused. On 5/1/23 9:15 PM, Tom Dial wrote: This Debian-user thread seems to have gone silent, but it is not clear whether your problem is solved. If it is, just ignore this and move on. If not: The Wanderer, in an earlier post (04/28/2023 at 19;02), suggested reinstalling the base-files package. I believe this is the correct procedure, at least to start with. It should be relatively free from any risk of doing further damage to your system. The same post also suggested you might need to reinstall other packages if they had created subdirectories under /var that are not included in the base-files package, That also should not significantly risk any further damage. Reinstalling installed packages sometimes helps and in my experience (almost 30 years now) is unlikely to be harmful. Reinstalling base-files (and other packages as needed) also should correct any permission problems that may have crept in. How to reinstall a package depends on how you maintain or upgrade your system. If you use synaptic or aptitude, both have reinstall options that you can choose from the menu or submenu you would use for a new package installation. If you log in as root on a terminal or terminal emulator to install and upgrade software, the command would be apt install --reinstall - for example, apt install --reinstall base-files If you use sudo in a terminal or terminal emulator to maintain software, use the above commands prefixed by "sudo" as you normally would for actions that need administrator privileges. This should reinstall the version of the base-files (or other named package) that matches the most recently installed version. I think the reinstall process might sometimes pause to ask you to choose between installing the default configuration file from the package or keeping an existing one that you might have changed. It should be safe to keep the one already installed. If you have questions about any of this, feel free to ask, either privately or on the list. regarding No SOUND
I misstated the version I am using. I am using 10.6, Buster, 64 bit. I have tried a few things that I am aware of and am looking for help. Maureen
all of a sudden I have no sound
I was on the computer and stopped to eat dinner and the puter went into black screen as it always does if left unattended. It would not wake up so I changed the batteries in my keyboard and it still would not wake up. So I turned it off with the switch and then back on. Once it was on it worked fine until I tried to play a you tube and found I had no sound at all. I checked the sound icon on the top right of the screen and it was set where I always have it. I went to the sound thing to check that I have sound and as I tested both speakers I heard nothing. The computer seemed to think that was fine with a smiley face. I am on a Lenova all in one computer with Debian 9. I have not needed any upgrades lately so that is not the problem as my system is kept up to date with all software. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Maureen

RTL problem
I have a Lenovo ideacenter 510A-15ABR, Amd A12-9800 that went crazy. The cmos was frozen from too many attempts to get into it so I had to open it up and play the jumper game to reset it. This went off without a hitch. Once back together it would only boot to fsckd-cancel-msg: Press CTRL+C to cancel filesystem checks in progress. The CTRL+C did not stopit and it ran forever. So I decided to re-install debian 10. While doing so I get to the part about the entering the needed rtl files which I have on DVD and on USB. I tried both but neither of them would work. I cannot get it to even come up to a command line to do dmesg and see what the real problem may be. Can anyone help? Thanks from an old lady using Debian Maureen

I do know that this list is for real problems but I am looking to get a new laptop, 17 inch preferable or an all in one computer. Just install the flash plugin manually. That's what I do and have done so since I started using Linux 15+ years ago. In firefox-esr, go to www.adobe.com. Make sure that's all that's in the URL. (It may take you to the Adobe Cloud app page.) Toward the bottom of the page, right hand side, you should see listed Adobe Reader, Flash Player, etc. Click Flash Player and you should be taken to the Download Page. The OS should say Linux, if not change it to. The player version should be 26.something. Using the Type dropdown menu, select tar.gz. NOT .DEB! Click Download. Don't do any of the following "install" steps. This is a manaul install, remember. Plus, the auto-install never worked for me. Check if the download suceeded. Depending on how you've got firefox-esr configured, the file should be in Downloads in your home directory or possibly on your Desktop. Using a file manager, exact the tar.gz file to the same place it was downloaded. The only file you need be concerned with is libflashplayer.so As root, using a terminal (or if your filemanager is able to switch to root priviledge), copy libflashplayer.so to /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/ Restart firefox-esr, do the about:plugin thing and see if FlashPlayer is there and enabled. Also, by entering about: in the URL line, see if firefox-esr version is 52.2.something. That's the lastest version of esr. Test if it works with your game sites, etc. Thank you, Patrick! You would not believe how much time I have wasted trying to install this thing (hmm... maybe you would). Manual installation rocks and it works for Jessie and FF 45.9.0. - Dan FWIW, you said you were "upgraded" to Stretch automatically. From Jessie, I assume. This was most likely caused by your Debian Repositories being set to "Stable." I had this happen 10+ years ago when I first tried Debian (Sarge). I was "upgraded" to Etch, IIRC, and it caused problems since it was a improper upgrade with a bastard system mix of Sarge and Etch. To make a long story short, the fix was a clean install. You may have to do that (clean install of either Jessie or Stretch), too, to get things working properly. If everything was working with Jessie, I suggest you install that. With Debian's Long Term Support, Jessie will be supported for another 3 years or so. Good Luck. B So I was playing around trying to figure this crap out and I installed Opera and my games work in that browser. They still do NOT work in Firefox ESR. I would use Opera but none of the movie things will play. So how is that for screwed up. I am going to download Stretch and do a clean install and then see how that goes. Thanks everyone for all the help.

I was able to get it working with the following manual installation of the Adobe .tar.gz. I use this method because it is what the flashplugin-nonfree installer does, and I hope that when the package installer is working, my manual installation will be compatible. I hope that this approach minimises mess. Download page: https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ Download the .tar.gz (should be the same as this link): https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/download/?installer=FP_24.0_for_Linux_64-bit_(.tar.gz)_-_NPAPI=5504=1 For the next steps, you need to be root. Flash proplem
Hello everyone, I have upgraded my firefox esr as it came up on my upgrade list. Since then I have lost the flash ability in my browser. I uninstalled flash and reinstalled in. I am using the nonfree plug in for my debian machine. I am at a complete loss as to what could have happened. I did not do a complete removal of it just the shorter version using synaptic. I really need to get it working again but have no idea how. Oh, I also backed out of the upgrade but that didn't solve the problem either. Any help will be gratefully appreciated. Maureen

OK so I did the startx and the first time got nothing and the machine froze. So to make sure that my disks were not missing anything I downloaded a new set and re-burned them. I did the startx and this time I got a page full of blue with ( across the page. I had to use an adapter from DVI to hdmi since this machine only has HDMI slots and no place else for DVI or VGA. I checked the adapter and it was different from the female plug which were 8 holes each of three rows but the adapter had 3 two spaces and 3 prongs in three matching rows. I have tried it several times and checked that the software for HP is installed and it is there. Is there a problem with cups? or is it me. The problem is probably neither you nor cups. How are you trying to install the printer and which software is it you refer to?

HP printer not added
I upgraded Wheezy to the latest version 7.8.0. Actually I had to reinstall it since the keyboard and mouse quite working and I was unable to log in even in recovery. Re: Moving from a 686-pae kernel to amd64?
My new toshiba is a 64 bit amd system. It has 6G of memory and 750G hard drive. Is the 64 bit system better or should I install the 32 bit. I am using weezy. Is it a good idea to convert to a 64bit kernel, specifically 3.16.0-4-amd64? How much memory do you have in your system? If the answer is 4G or less then there is no advantage. Stay with the 32-bit kernel. If the answer is 64G or more then yes you should definitely use a 64-bit kernel. If the answer is between 4G and 64G then the answer is it depends and there are advantages and disadvantages to both. If you currently have a 32-bit system then I recommend staying there. A 64-bit kernel won't have much advantage for a 32-bit userspace. It is rather a pain to change from 32-bit userland to 64-bit. Not really worth it. Is your web browser exceeding 3G of ram image? If the answer is yes then you should re-install to a 64-bit userland. If the answer is no then stick with 32-bits. And if it is a good idea, how do I do it? Is it as simple as downloading the 3.16.0-4-amd64 kernel, reboot to it, and delete the 3.16.0-4-686-pae kernel? Simply install the linux-image-amd64 metapackage, let it drag in the version numbered kernel, and then reboot to it. # uname -a Linux joseki 3.2.0-4-686-pae #1 SMP Debian 3.2.65-1+deb7u2 i686 GNU/Linux # apt-get install linux-image-amd64 Reading package lists... Re: Moving from a 686-pae kernel to amd64?
Thank you I will use the 64 bit one. Thanks again. Moe On 02/28/2015 05:51 PM, Bob Proulx wrote: Linux-Fan wrote: Maureen L Thomas wrote: My new toshiba is a 64 bit amd system. I recommend you to install the 64 bit version so that a single process is able to address more than two GiB of RAM (can be useful with data compression like 7z and other software which can make use a lot of RAM). Agreed. 6G and a pristine new system install then I would install an amd64 64-bit system. Actually even with 4G I usually install 64-bit anyway just for consistency with the new direction everything is moving. But as you can see I do still have 32-bit systems and I am not converting them to 64-bit as a conversion.
