interrupted file transfer

1998-12-07 Thread Paolo M. Pumilia
Hi all,
Recently (in the last few weeks) i noticed that some files cannot
be ftp-retrieved completely. It is the case of the file g77_2.91.60-1.deb
whose transfer stopped at 1210340 (96%).
It is not due to the server, since a tried to reget the file from different
debian mirrors, with no success. I also tried to change the ftp-client,
but no luck: i can successfully start or restart transfer for every file
from the distribution, but g77_2.91.60-1.deb cannot be downloaded beyond the
level 1210340 bytes.
Using the program lftp i tried to monitor transfer process in debug mode,
but i gained no useful information.

Can anybody help me to understand what is happening?

thank you

slib installation failed

1998-10-06 Thread Paolo M. Pumilia
Hi all,
I cannot install slib on my debian machine. The reason
seems obscure to me. Here is the log from dpkg:

Preparing to replace slib 2c0-3 (using slib_2c0-3.deb) ...
 Unpacking replacement slib ...
 Setting up slib (2c0-3) ...
guile: Could not find slib/require.scm in (/usr/share/guile/site
 /usr/share/guile/1.2 /usr/share/guile .)
 dpkg: error processing slib (--install):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 2
 Errors were encountered while processing:

Maybe somebody can give me help to interpret the above message.
File require.scm is really missing; the whole directory slib is missing really.
Where should i get such file?
Guile libs have been installed, as one can see:
ii guile1.21.2-3 Guile, the GNU extension language
ii libguile2 1.2-3 Scheme and interpreter libraries for guile
 ii libguile3 1998.08.24-1 `libguile.so.3' shared libraries for
 Guile1.

What is missing in my system?

tank you for your suggestions

re-installing gcc_2.7.2.3

1998-05-23 Thread Paolo M. Pumilia
Hi all,
A few days ago i installed gcc-2.8.1 in /usr, by mistake, thus
overwriting gcc_2.7.2.3 that is to be used when compiling the
kernel in debian distribution.
Than i run 'make uninstall' for gcc-2.8.1 and tried to reinstall
gcc_2.7.2.3-3.deb. I gon the following cryptic message:

 Unpacking gcc (from gcc_2.7.2.3-3.deb) ...
 dpkg: error processing gcc_2.7.2.3-3.deb (--install):
trying to overwrite `/usr/bin/g++', which is also in package g++
dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (Broken pipe)
 Errors were encountered while processing:
  gcc_2.7.2.3-3.deb

I think that messages like 'error processing ...' without intelligible
hints about what problem has been encountered should be avoided. Moreover
/usr/bin/g++ seems to be a regular file ...
Lastly: what does it mean (to common users) the sentence:'subprocess paste
killed by signal (Broken pipe)' ?

Can anybody explain me how to re-install gcc_2.7.2.3 ?

thank you

Paolo Pumilia

Unusual behaviour after ugrading to login_970616

1997-12-30 Thread Paolo M. Pumilia
Hi all,

Since i upgraded to login_970616-1.deb
i noticed two weird things:
- user that logs in through xdm cannot be detected
by 'who' command, while users that log in during
an X session, through 'telnet localhost' are
  displayed as usual.
- Login from the 'command line level' (level 2 maybe,
i am non sure of the common consent about levels)
is not allowed to root! Ordinary users can log in,
but root access is denyed because Login incorrect.

Can anybody explain what has happened ?

thank you for your suggesions

Forcing xforms installation?

1997-12-21 Thread Paolo M. Pumilia

Hi all,
I have recently removed xlib and installed xlib6_3.3.1-2.deb. that
provides shared libraries required by libc5-based X clients and should
replace elf-x11r6lib and xlib.
As i try to install xforms0.86_0.86-2.deb, dpkg seems to check only if xlib
can be found (that is not installed any more) and therefore complains:
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of xforms0.86:
  xforms0.86 depends on elf-x11r6lib; however:
   Package elf-x11r6lib is not installed.
Package xlib which provides elf-x11r6lib is not installed.
 dpkg: error processing xforms0.86 (--install):
  dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
 Errors were encountered while processing:
 xforms0.86

should i force installation for xforms or does something is wrong in
my procedure?

thank you for your suggestions

installing xlib6g (libc6)

1997-12-16 Thread Paolo M. Pumilia
Hi all,
I have made several attempts to install xlib6-dev_3.3-4.deb,
yet i did not succed.
dpkg complains:
 . . .
 dpkg: regarding xlib6g_3.3.1-2.deb containing xlib6g:
  xlib6g conflicts with xlib6 ( 3.3-5)
   xlib6 (version 3.3-4) is installed.
 dpkg: error processing xlib6g_3.3.1-2.deb (--install):
conflicting packages - not installing xlib6g
 Errors were encountered while processing:
  xlib6g_3.3.1-2.deb

In fact xlib6 and xlib6-dev are installed, but version 3.3-4 seems
to be the latest available one; it should not be considerd 'much less'
than 3.3-5.
In any case, where xlib6_3.3-5 and xlib6-dev_3.3-5 can be found?

thank you

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1150384 Jan 22 18:54
/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i486-linux/2.7.2.1/cc
