Re: Just my opinion

Yeah, good idea Dan. I think that's what I'll do to... If you think RedHat
is better for a begginner, that's what I'll do... Cya people!!!

First of all, debian is mostly for a hacker or at least someone who has used

had great documentation and everything. For some reason, though, some person
marked it as the lowest out of the top 5 distro's (this was a few months
ago). I decided to try debian as a result to Rob Malda's phanatic'ing about
it and because it seemed like a well organized distro since it was mostly
public rather than private like most of the other distro's were. Therefore I
figured a lot of hackers used it. While I didn't read the documentation on
how to install it all that much, I pretty much winged it and at first I
thought it kinda sucked cuz the dselect program seemed ridiculous, but then
after using it I started liking it. It now runs on my server at
nightsifting.dhs.org. The point is that you should start out on something
like Redhat if you aren't close to being a hacker (and complaining
definately takes away any possibility of even resembeling a hacker). So I'd
stop complaining, go buy a nice thick book on Redhat Linux, read it
carefully, install it, then come back and we'll see if the attitude has
changed.

My printer works fine. My modem works fine. The documentation has always
been right on and the installation is a breeze.

It won't drive your printer, it won't detect your modem, the

installation procedure has more bugs than a Southeast Asian

Re: [RedHat]: Automatic Hardware Detection

1999-07-04 Thread Paulo J Matos aka PDestroy
Automatic Hardware detection is what Win98 has for example... When you
install a printer, and restart win98, it'll say that there is a new printer
and install it for you. I would like to know if RedHat or any other Linux
type OS can do that.

Some newbie questions

1999-05-09 Thread Paulo J Matos aka PDestroy
1 - My X server since installation starts automaticly... I don't want it to
auto - start. How do I take that option out?

2 - Is there any kind of autoexec.bat at Debian? Where?

3 - How do I mount my Windows file system at hda1? Then so it'll mount every
time I log, I'll have to add the mount command to the Debian autoexec right?

4 - How do I configure my PCBIT ISDN card. I installed the module but it
says when it is loading it that there are still 3 files to be configured at
/etc/isdn... How do I configure them ? Isn't there an ISDN How-to somewhere?

Printer and stuff

1999-05-06 Thread Paulo J Matos aka PDestroy
I tried to print, and paragraphs got tabs before it, like this:

3
Understand? How can I take them out? I need also to configure Linux to
connect to the Internet with an ISDN card. What should I do first? (Already
installed every package for ISDN and Linux recognizes it but in the
beggining while loading modules and stuff it says I still need to configure
3 files at /isdn/ I think.) Is there any document, how-to that explains this
kind of things to me? I know I installed a newbie package but I don't know
where it is located or how can I read the file. HELP!!!

Debian 2.1.3 instalation (PCBIT)

1999-05-03 Thread Paulo J Matos aka PDestroy
Hi,
During instalation I had to add modules to the kernel and one of the modules
was PCBIT ISDN module. It asked me for parameters. I have the io and irq
asked for, i got that info in the Win98 control panel, but I don't know how
to insert it.
And the io was written in a different way. What I have is:
IRQ - 11
I/O - 0108-010B
The default value for the io was something like 0xd . Strange was to
write the io. So I tried only to set up the IRQ and wrote: pcbit irq=11
The system just said it was installing module but for about 10 minutes said
that so I rebooted. I think that something was wrong. How do I set this up?

Thanks in advance,
