Mozilla 1.3 and Java plugin
Hello, I can't get Mozilla 1.3 to recognize the java plugin that I install in my PC. I'm running Sid, and I've tried the Blackdown Java and Sun's Java run times, both 1.4.1. With both Java implementations, after doing the install, I go to /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins and do a soft link to the libjavaplugin_oji.so file that comes with the Java distribution. I verified that all the libraries are present by running the ldd command against this .so file and everything looks OK. However, when I relaunch Mozilla I don't get any java plugin listed in the about:plugins page. I however see all other plugins that live in the /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins directory. Any ideas? Ximian Evolution and keyboard mappings
Hello, The mail composer in Evolution has a bizarre key binding and I can't figure out how to change it. For example, HOME/END take me to the begining/end of the document rather than to the beginning/end of the line, CTL-X doesn't cut the selection, CTL-V doesn't paste the selection (seems to take me to the end of the document), CTL-C copies to the pointer buffer rather than to the keyboard buffer, etc. All other applications in my gnome desktop seem to do the right thing, like gedit, abiword, etc. How can I chage this behavior in evolution? -- Pedro

Who uses my floppy drive?
Hello, I am running a Woody box and I have the problem that whenever I try to use the floppy drive (mount it or using mtools) I get the error device already mounted or device busy. But /dev/fd0 is not mounted (as reported by df); also if I type fuser -m /dev/fd0 I get a null answer which I guess it means no process is using /dev/fd0. What I just noticed is that the floppy works fine if I boot into single mode with linux single or with the telinit 1 command. Re: ps2pdf and LaTeX's seminar style
I do this with XFig. Open a new document and import your landscape PS file using the picture tool (the photo camera button). When doing this use any picture size you want. You'll get a dialog where you can browse and pick up the desired file. Just before clicking done click use original size on the bottom left. You now have your PS picture with the original size into the XFig canvas. Select portrait mode from the view menu (or press alt-c) and then export the file (alt-x) to PDF. It works for me. -- Pedro I've had the same problem of converting Landscape PS files to PDF so that they can be viewed right way up in Acrobat Reader. The only way I've found is to use the 'pstill' program with the '-R' option: pstill -R90 .. generates a PDF which is rotated clockwise by 90 degrees. For the 'pstill' program, if you don't know it already, see http://www.this.net/~frank/pstill.html It is not totally straightforward to get this program set up, but once you have it running it does a good job. I don't know of any way to get ps2pdf to rotate the output. Ted.

Re: About network daemons in a multi homed workstation
Thank you for your answers. I was absent for a few days and couldn't follow on this thread that I started. My NFS/SAMBA server is in a lab with no connections to the external world and it is just serving a few Debian development workstations. That's why I don't care about security. Anyway, I think I found the source of the problem. The two Ethernet interfaces with problems in the server are connected to a prototype router that at this moment is not learning MAC addresses properly. However, it handles well ARP and the workstations know about the MAC addresses of the router. What happens then is that all incoming traffic, from the router into the Debian server, has as the destination MAC address. Curiously enough, this layer 2 broadcast address is processed well by ICMP (the ping command in my case) but not by the network daemons. That is, I can ping the server from the other workstations across the router but I can't NFS/SMB-mount any files on them. Fixing the problem with the MAC address makes the network daemons available to the clients. So the question probably is, who is stopping these layer 2 broadcast messages from getting to the network daemons? and why? Pedro I. Sanchez Hello, I have Debian 2.0 in a PC with three different Ethernet interfaces, each interface in a different subnet. I notice that network daemons like telnet, ftp and NFS only work via the first interface (eth0) and completely ignore the other two interfaces. What has to be done to make them work in all interfaces? Even more, is it possible to tell, say NFS, to work on two of them and ignore the third one? Re: About network daemons in a multi homed workstation
The interfaces are well configured; I can ping on any of them, I have a custom client/server application running on the second interface and the routed daemon is aware of the third one. But still NFS, telnet and ftp don't work. The /etc/hosts.access and /etc/hosts.deny files are empty (just comments). Any other ideas? Thank you, Pedro I. Sanchez On Mon, 30 Nov 1998 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hello, I have Debian 2.0 in a PC with three different Ethernet interfaces, each interface in a different subnet. What has to be done to make them work in all interfaces? Even more, is it possible to tell, say NFS, to work on two of them and ignore the third one? Thank you, Pedro I. Sanchez The network daemons know nothing about such mundane details as to the network interfaces that a particular system has. They are completely screened from these details by the IP network layer and the TCP or UDP transport layers (which is a good thing). If the network interfaces are configured correctly, then there should be (at least) three IP addresses assigned to the system, one for each network interface (Ethernet device in your case). Any of these IP addresses is a valid address for that system. So, if a user on another system (client) telnets to the system in question, he would command telnet to connect to one of the IP addresses of that system (server) and, as long as the client has connectivity with the server, then the telnet session should occur normally. So without going into any more details of this, if you're having problems telneting (or whatever) on two of the three network interfaces, the first thing I'd check is whether these network interfaces are configured properly. What does the command 'ifconfig' show? Are the interfaces UP, RUNNING, and are you receiving and transmitting packets over them? Can you 'ping' other systems that are on the directly connected networks for those two interfaces? If the anwsers to all of these are yes then the network interfaces are probably configured properly and your network services should work. The other thing that comes to mind is denying host access through the /etc/hosts.allow, /etc/hosts.deny configuration. See if these files are configured and read 'man hosts_access' for an explanation. Hope this helps... Get your free email from AltaVista at http://altavista.iname.com

What you can do is temporally remove the +::: and +: entries from /etc/group and /etc/passwd, run adduser and then replace the NIS entries in those files. Pedro I. Sanchez Hi all ! Can somebody tell me if there is a bug in adduser? I tried to use it yesterday to add some new users to my system when, to my surprise, iut failed. As a matter of fact, adduser had problems with the NIS entries of the files: /etc/passwd and /etc/group; it didn't remove those entries to add the new users, so there was trouble. Therefore, I had to remove then by hand and to add then latter (by hand too). Is this ok? Thanks in advance. New Install 1.3.1: /etc/init.d/xdm empty
Hello, I installed Debian 1.3.1 on a new machine and I found two problems: 1. After installing xbase and the SVGA server, the file /etc/X11/xdm/Xserver refers to /usr/X11/X11R6/bin/X (or something like this, I don't recall well). The right name should be /usr/bin/X11/X. 2. /etc/init.d/xdm is empty so my PC doesn't boot into X automatically. If I execute xdm manually everything is ok. NIS Problem ... about to be solved? (I hope)
Hello, A few days ago I reported the problem of NIS not working in Debian 1.3. It still does not work and unfortunately no one seems to have an answer. However, I just read the following from H.J. Lu regarding his new release (5.4.33) of libc: ... 4. I have modified the NIS support in libc, which is not compatible with the previous version, but is compatible with SunOS, Solaris, ... except for those brain dead xxxBSD. Please make sure you have the same ypclients as the one at where you get this C library. Otherwise your NIS won't work with the modified NIS code in this libc. If you use a different yp client other than those in my YP clients package, you may need a patch. Please send me a note and I will fix it for you as soon as possible. Now, Does debian uses Lu's YP client package. Could it be that the source of the NIS problems is a mismatch between Debian's YP clients/servers and libc libraries? Could this new libc release solve the problems? I whish someone could elaborate a bit more on this issue. Just in case someone who might help me with the NIS problem is reading about it by the first time in this list, I explain what is happening to me after my signature. Thank you, -- Pedro I. Sanchez Here is what happens to me. I have two Debian 1.3 boxes. One runs the NIS server, the other is a client. What follows is a transcript of a two-command session in the client machine: ~ypmatch rover passwd rover:V/8DB9sycYRnM:1017:1017:Nadia Rover:/home/rover:/bin/bash ~su rover su: user rover does not exist all other YP commands work well like ~ypcat -x Use passwd for passwd.byname Use group for group.byname Use networks for networks.byaddr Use hosts for hosts.byname Use protocols for protocols.bynumber Use services for services.byname Use aliases for mail.aliases Use ethers for ethers.byname and no errors are reported anyplace. So, the ypbind client connects with the server but for some reason the system commands, like su or ls, cannot see the NIS mappings. I am running libc5_5.4.23-6, libc6_2.0.3-4 and NIS_2.20-1. I have a third Debain box on the works and three more are about to come. However, if this problem is not solved soon, I'm afraid I'll be forced to completely replace Debian with Solaris. I wish someone could help. I really enjoy Debian. -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Trouble? e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] .
NIS is broken in Debian 1.3!
Hello, I asked this once and I got no answers. I know there's at least one more person in this list with the same problem but we've been unable to solve it. The problem: With the lattest versions (unstable) of everything, the NIS clients are unable to read the maps from the NIS server. No errors are reported, the ypbind daemon seems to run well, even ypcat -x returns the proper answer, but the fact is, the client can't see the server's user accounts, groups or aliases files. NOTE: In my configuration, the NIS server is Debian 1.3 with two clients, one Debian 1.2 and one Debian 1.3. The lattest has never worked but the former was just running ok ... until I installed Debian 1.3. I don't believe I have any problem with my configuration (all the + entries in the passwd, group and aliases files) and the ypbind daemon connects just fine to the server. So, Does anybody have a NIS installation running ok with Debian 1.3? I would appreciate if any one can help me figure out what's going on. -- Pedro I. Re: NIS is broken in Debian 1.3!
Both the server and the client machines have libc5 version 5.4.23-4 and libc6 version 2.0.3-4. How to see the group and aliases file on the NIS server
Hello, I installed NIS on a Debian server and I'm trying to set up another Debian as a NIS client (latest Debian versions from the unstable tree). In the latter, I added the line +::: to the /etc/group file and the line + to /etc/aliases. Then, I started the ypbind daemon. In the client machine, if I give the command ypcat group I can see the groups defined in the server. However, the system utilities can't see those groups. By this I mean, an ls -l just reports the GID of the files as numbers, not names, the chgrp command doesn't recognize the NIS server's groups, etc. Also, smail doesn't see the aliases file even though the ypcat aliases command shows the right content. The password file however seems to be recognized. I can login on the client machine using the users defined in the master. If you have an idea of what I may be missing please drop me a note. Suggestions on NFS strategy
Hello, I'd like to have your opinions on an issue I have on the proper way to install NFS. I set up a Debian file-server with two purposes: - Provide file space to Linux and Win95 users (with NFS client software), and - Keep all Linux users with an up-to-date release of Debian. For the latter, I want to update software in the file-server ONLY and have all Linux users nfs-mount /usr and /home from it. Each Linux client will have its own root and /var partitions. My main concern is with /etc. Certainly, I cannot have the Linux clients mount /etc from the file-server because the start-up scripts, X11 and a bunch of other things change from one machine to another. But on the other hand, all Debian packages keep their default config files under /etc. This means that if the clients don't mount /etc from the file-server, they'll run into troubles when running the new applications I install in the file-server. I'm thinking of having the clients mount the file-server's /etc into, say, their local /user/etc, have these clients manually copy the relevant config files from there into their /etc, and then tune-up these config files if required. Is this the right way of doing things? How would do you do it? I'd appreciate your comments very much, thank you, -- Pedro I. Sanchez

All keys work well under the console (non-X)!. I am using the latest version of Debian (brand new system installed yesterday). Is there something to be done to properly set up X? Need advise on repartitioning
Hello, I have two hard disks, /dev/hda and /dev/hdb. The latter has only two primary partitions assigned to swap and /home. I want to create a third partition in /dev/hdb and asign it to /var, which currently lives in /dev/hda in the same partition of / (no separate partition for /var). I am thinking on the following: 1. tar cvf var.tar /var/* to have a backup of the current contents of /var. 2. tar cvf home.tar /home/* to have a backup of home. 3. umount /home and use cfdisk to create the new partition. 4. Modify /etc/fstab to account for the new mapping of file systems. 5. Mount /home and restore the files from home.tar 6. Reboot Linux and once the new /var is mounted restore the files from var.tar I'm not sure about the last point since during the booting process some info in /var might be needed. Also, if it works, what happpens to the files in the original /var (in /dev/hda)? I'd appreciate if someone can enlighten for me the right way to do this. Thank you, Pedro Ivan -- P.S. I overlooked giving /var its own partition when I first installed debian and it lives under the root partition. However /var/spool/mail is getting to big (to many users!) and that's why I need the extra space available in /dev/hdb.

Anonymous ftp and the ls command.
Hello, I have debian 1.1 and I installed an anonymous ftp service. It works fine except for an annoying problem: ftp users can always see the files in the ftp site even though there is no ls binary under the bin directory of ~ftp. I understand that ftp users will only be able to execute commands with valid binaries under ~ftp/bin. So if there is no ~ftp/bin/ls there shouldn't be a way to see the directory structure. Am I wrong? I'd appreciate any hint on this. Thank you, Pedro Ivan --
Re: Anonymous ftp and the ls command.
This is exactly my problem. The _anonymous_ users still can use the ls command even though there is no ~ftp/bin/ls binary! How's that possible? Pedro Ivan -- Brian C. The chroot is only done for _anonymous_ ftp and thus only this login has limited command access. All other userids will run with the standard commands in /bin. Need an 8 mm tape recommendation
Hello, I need to buy and install an 8mm tape system for our debian systems. If you happen to have one up and running, could you drop me a note telling me things like: - Tape system brand name, - Connection type (serial/parallel port, internal, etc.), - Software used to access the tape (I only see something called taper in the debian distribution), - Any other info that could guide me. Thank you, Pedro Ivan --
Re: Where is net-modules.txt

Where is net-modules.txt
Hi, I'm trying to get a hold on the file net-modules.txt. Where does it leave? I saw a message refering to Documentation/networking/net-modules.txt in the Kernel-source directory. Where is that? Do I have to download the 6 Mb kernel source tar file? If so, I'd appreciate if someone can e-mail me the net-modules.txt file instead. (Shouldn't this file leave in /usr/doc/module, after the base system is installed?) Thank you, ___ Pedro I. Sanchez|Phone:(514) 683-6363 x31 |2250 Pl. I can't configure my Ethernet card
Hello, I've been unable to configure my Ethernet card under Debian 1.1. The documentation that comes with the card says Software Driver compatible to existing NE-2100/AM-1500T. My first guess was to use the ne driver but it doesn't work. The ethercard uses the AMD 79C961 chip. From the Ethernet-HOWTO: AMD 79C961 (PCnet-ISA+) Status -- Supported This is the PCnet-ISA+ -- an enhanced version of the 79C960. It has support for jumper-less configuration and Plug and Play. See the info in the above section. This fits my ethercard. The above section mentions the LANCE driver as the one to use with this card. However, even though the driver lance.c is listed in the net-modules.txt file, I can't find the lance.o file in my system. If I give the command insmod lance I get Cannot open /lib/modules/misc/lance.o Actually, there's no such directory misc under lib/modules. Why is then ismod looking for that? Anyway, I have a directory /lib/modules/current/net with several net drivers on it except lance. My questions are then: 1. How do I get this lance module to work? (where is lance.o?) 2. How do I configure this driver? (My ethercard is set to use irq=5, dma=3, address=0x2E0). Thanks for any help on this matter. ___ Pedro I. Sanchez|Phone:(514) 683-6363 x31 |2250 Pl. Can't find my Ethernet card
Hi, I installed Debian 1.1 in my Cyrix 586 and other than my Ethernet access everything seems to be doing well. While I am in M$ Windows, Netware installs ok and reports the NIC with IRQ=5, DMA=3, Port=2E0 (the same if I just use the MSD.EXE program under the windows directory). I added the following lines to /etc/conf.modules alias eth0 ne options ne io=0x2E0 irq=5 However if I run 'depmod -a; modprobe eth0' modprobe complains saying that there is no NE*000 device in that address. How shall I interpret the report I get from M$ Windows? Thanks for your help. ___ Pedro I. Sanchez|Phone:(514) 683-6363 x31 |2250 Pl.
