Well, yes, it's a distribution. We'd like to think that it's somewhat
nicer than Slackware and Redhat, tho :) .

And IMHO
it is ;-)

I really need some help

1997-07-02 Thread Peter . Yarych . gandolph
Ok I've narrowed my dpkg problem down to the following files
I asked before if some would zip up there info directory...
and recieved no responces... which is understandable to say the least
I was asking a hugh favour
But I have gotten it down to the following files
So please please please please send them to me and my system should be back
to normal
The following files are corupt
debmake.list
mgetty-docs.list
mgetty-fax.list
mgetty.list
mount.list
xmix.list
These files reside in the /var/lib/dpkg/info directory
could someone or a few poeple even compress those for me
and send them this way ;-)
If they can't be sent, could someone point me in the direction of
repairing these files
dpkg simply will not work if it can't read the data in files under info

I realise that I'm getting under peoples skins with these requests but I'm
at a loss of how else to go about getting these files.

TIA
Peter

Is there any easy way to find out, what speed my modem connected to

I want to be sure that it connected at 28800 baud and not at 14400.

/var/log/ppp.log should tell what the connect speed was

Update on can't Install any deb's

1997-06-29 Thread Peter . Yarych . gandolph
Hello fellow Debian users

I found the problem as to why I get 'empty filename'
and the database that is read.
its the /var/lib/dpkg/info where thats the info on all deb's I think
So what I have since done is move the offending files out of there.:-)
but of course that got me only thourgh `mgetty-fax', and then another `empty fil
ename' came :-(
So I removed that one and another of the same error came up...
I conclude that my info dir/database is curupt :-(
This have occured when I was doing a minor upgrade and my computer locked up
causing me to reset the computer
I would like for someone to gzip there info dir and send my please
I would prefer someone with a simular install options as mine
I use ftp.debian.org
[ stable unstable contrib non-free]
curently running 1.3
kernel 2.0.30
Basically I think that I need only the *.list files from the info directroy
which what I would try replacing first.
I'm also very open to suggestions on other ways of fixing this problem...
Please reply asap
as my system is somewhere in between here and the twlight zone.

TIA
Peter

Neighter am I. But it may well help if you try to install floatbg
by hand: type

  dpkg -i debian/stable/binary-i386/x11/floatbg_1.0-6.deb

I've done that, which made me try installing it via dselect, I perfer to
install by hand
(where you'll probably have to edit the true path to the binary).

If that doesn't work, try to reinstall mgetty-fax, there appears
to be something wrong there too (preferalby using the above manual
method again).

If eighter goes wrong, I'm sure we'll be able to help you better
when you give us the error messages produced then. But probably
all's well then

Same error message when I try install any deb
And I can't to find `mgetty-fax' on ftp.debian.org
I tried the search engine but it keeps timing out
but I think that I would get the same result
as the above error msg
reason being it happens when it starts reading the database..

Any and All Help is Very Welcome

Peter

What I have tried so far is this..
dpkg --clear-avail
dpkg --purge mgetty-fax above error message occurs
What database is dpkg reading, and can I just edit the darn thing?
I'm not even sure what cuased this to happen.
But I do need it resolved reinstalling is really not an option at
this point, I only have 1.1 on cdrom :-(
Going to order 1.3 today or tomorrow :-)

Re: available file

1997-06-22 Thread Peter . Yarych . gandolph
you don't need the available file. The status of your system is in status.
Just remove the available file, and fire up dselect.

Phil.
