No, I mean, AFAICT, IMAP was not designed for this paradigm (same
 message present in different folders/tags/views/whatever).

I've also come to that conclusion. I think we're saying the same thing
just different words (maybe?). It looks like to me this paradigm was
designed for use on Gmail's own interface and that's it.

Mutt with the correct macros and folder-hooks can be bent into adapting
 to Gmail's style, mostly...

I'm still new to Mutt so I will have to look into this much further, not
to mention doing some manual reading.

Unless I'm missing something it does *not* do what I want, but I worked
around it with mutt macros (see my other post).

Heh...I noticed that too. I'll take a look at your post.

Get away from the web interface. Install Icedove/Evolution/Mutt and use
 Google's IMAPs interface.

I use Evolution and Mutt with Google's IMAP interface. It works nicely
but I've noticed this quirky behavior when using a client via IMAP. My
messages appear in multiple places at the same time.

For instance I'll have new mail display in Inbox, All Mail (where
*everything* is), and then in the individual labels (or folders).
Pretty funky. At first I just thought it was an Evolution thing,
but I've tested it with Outlook 2003, Thunderbird, and Mutt. I am
assuming that each message isn't actually being delivered three times
and just listed in different folders within the account.

Is there a way for this to be disabled and subsequently have
messages be displayed in their specific folders...or is this just how
Gmail works?

I interpret the if used correctly bit to mean using the GMail web

Unfortunately it's not very usable via IMAP.

I read somewhere in my travels across the Web today while researching

how accurate that is since I don't the underlying details of this
protocol.

 Example:
How do I tell mutt to tag the message as read in All Mail when I delete

There's a Gmail Labs thing that has extensive IMAP controls which will
do that. Another poster suggested that to me.

Hmm, as far as I understand, a message is always present in [Gmail]/All
Mail', unless moved to [Gmail]/Trash or [Gmail]/Spam. New mail (not
filtered) goes to my Inbox. If I want to get rid of it for good I move
it to [Gmail]/Trash, but if I want to archive it I just delete the
Inbox tag for it, since the mail still has the All Mail tag.

Yes. The way Gmail works is different to say the least.

Maybe this is mutt specific, but if I just delete the mail from Inbox in
All Mail the message is still marked as unread (a.k.a new).

I experience this same issue when using other clients, notably
Evolution, Outlook, and Mutt. I end up with a lot of duplicate messages
even though there is only one original message delivered to my Gmail
account. This makes things confusing.

Re: transition from Ubuntu - Debian to avoid Unity Desktop?

2011-01-17 Thread Petrus Validus

Can I escape Ubuntu to Debian?

Sure!

 1. Is Debian defaulting to the Unity Desktop too? (please say no)

No.

Well...as far as I can see into the future Debian won't be defaulting to
it. It might be included in some repo somewhere down the road. If I
recall correctly there was a decent discussion on Unity and Debian here
on this list sometime at the end of last year.

 2. How can I make a transition to Debian from Ubuntu? So I need to
change my apt repositories and then do what else? If glibc or the
kernel headers are new, I'll have to recompile everything I've built,
 but that's OK.

When I transitioned from Ubuntu to Debian this was 4 years ago and I
just backed up my data to DVD, did a clean install, and then restored my
data. Not sure if this answer helps you much...

 3. If I make this change Ubuntu - Debian, will I end up back in
Nvidia Hell where the OS updates frequently break the
commercial/proprietary video drivers? I understand that nouveau is
providing reasonable 2D for Nvidia cards, but my job requires the 3D
support that seems available only from the commercial driver.

I did not experience problems using the Nvidia driver and updating Debian.

Changing default size of gnome-terminal when launching terminal apps

I know if I were just launching a normal instance gnome-terminal I could
adjust its default size in its respective launcher properties under the

But this does not fix my problem. How do I fix my Mutt's gnome-terminal

The Lexicon Alpha and Omega use USB 1.0 and thus work with Linux Etch,
Lenny, and Squeeze; a two- or three-line configuration file may be
needed to make the Lexicon the default sound device. With Ubuntu
 10.10, both are fully plug-and-play.

This is exciting to hear that such interfaces have out of the box
compatibility. What about other units like the MBox2 and various
M-Audio interfaces - do they have the same level of Linux compatibility
as the Lexicon units?

Last I heard, which was about 1-1.5 years ago, the DigiDesign MBox2 was
a no-go and M-Audio external interfaces were hit or miss.

Regarding Ubuntu, however, I find that it's just easier to use the

Re: gdmflexiserver goes crazy

2010-12-12 Thread Petrus Validus

Logging out to get to a login screen didn't work either. Now all ctl-alt-
f* keys give me a screen with no sognal. Had to hard-reset to reboot.
Now using a Debian stable instead of testing, just to get this message
 out.

I had something similar to me happen when I tried out Testing two months
ago. Switching from GNOME (on tty7) to tty2 and then back to tt7 again
gave me the same blank screen with no signal problem. I found by
switching around to different ttys that my usual F7 session had
mysteriously moved to tty8.

I went back to using Stable on this machine.

Re: Frustration made me do it.

2010-11-19 Thread Petrus Validus

Mozilla products are memory/CPU hogs, yes. I hope newer versions can
  correct that.

I often wonder about this; IIRC, FF used to advertise itself as
lightweight. Does it still do that? Was it ever accurate?

Maybe at version 1.0...but it just seems to become more and more bloated
with each release. Quite disappointing, really.

How does Seamonkey fare at performance/resource handling? Is it any
better than FF? I haven't used it in quite some time.

Re: Wayland Unity -- any repercussions on Debian?

2010-11-09 Thread Petrus Validus

What are your opinions on the matter, will this have repercussions for
 Debian? *Should* it?

Admittedly I don't know much about either, I had to do some reading
first. I don't see it having any *immediate* effects on Debian as they
are two separate entities.

I tend to agree with the phrase, newer isn't always better. It's one
of the reasons why I use Debian. From the limited reading and
screenshots I've seen I can say GNOME works just fine for me.

Question about Installing Lenny on a laptop

2009-06-17 Thread Petrus Validus
Hi All,

I am installing Lenny on a Toshiba Tecra A8. During the software
selection screen by default the options Desktop Environment Laptop
and Standard System are checked.

Usually I just install the base and build from there (on desktops) but
since I'm on a laptop I'm wondering what tools and packages are part of
the Laptop selection? Are they necessary they be installed with the
rest of the system or does it not matter?

Thanks in advance,

Re: debian and ubuntu

2009-04-26 Thread Petrus Validus
i would like to see some opinions and personal experiences regarding
 these 2 excellent systems!

I used to use Ubuntu back in the 5.10 and 6.06 days for about a year or
so as a desktop. I liked it and it was alright but Debian's stability
and performance won me over!

I never really paid attention to Ubuntu's package selection, however,
since I used a stock configuration most of the time. Does anyone know
if Ubuntu has the same vast package selection as Debian? Just
wondering...

Because MS-bashing on a Debian-centric list does wonder for promoting
the usage of FOSS software, right?

 I'm not promoting anything.

A bit of anti-M$ trolling is always fun and could get the party going.

 :-)

I was a Windows admin for a number of years, that company drove me to
Linux, the trolling is appreciated!
