kprinter: error after upgrade
Hi! I am running Debian testing and after a recent update some part of kde printing broke. I have a nicely working CUPS with several printers installed. All of them work fine if I do lpr -P SOMEPRINTER somefile.ps or lpr -P OTHERPRINTER otherfile.pdf But if I try to print via kprinter a dialog Box pops up saying Error while printing file followed by (Catastropy! - KNotify) A print error occurred. Error message received from system: Error while reading filter description for true. Empty command line received. And the follwoing error message goes to STDERR: QFile::open: No file name specified For some printers I was able to fix the problem by simply deleting and re-installing them. Others refuse to work even after that. For the ones that still don't work the test page (during installation) printed fine but the above error remains. Any hints? Any debug options I could use to get more information on the nature of the problem? Any good URLs describing the filter workflow and its config files? If that is also the case for you, then you should be able to fix it: When the KPrinter dialog comes up, select Properties and find the Filter tab. You will probably have to use the scroll buttons since this tab is all the way to the right. One thing might be kind of a problem, however, since the hd is damaged at its very beginning and attempting to mount it gives I/O error on sector 0 and the consecutive ones. So the disk is not entirely dead as in not responding at all? Thats a start. So, is there a way to jump after those erroneous sectors and read what's left. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated, thanks! The usual procedure is to copy the entire content of the disk into a file on another disk and then work with that - i.e. try to find partitions and files. You can use dd for copying but dd will have trouble with unreadable sectors. You can tell dd to skip a certain number of block but that will only solve the problem, if the rest of the disk is readable. I have heard that people have succeded using dd_rescue. From the package description: dd_rescue is a tool to help you to save data from crashed partition. It tries to read and if it fails, it will go on with the next sectors where tools like dd will fail. If the copying process is interrupted by the user it is possible to continue at any position later. It can copy backwards. Sounds like this might be what you need. I have never used it, so don't blame me if it's not. cu and good luck Philipp -- Dr. Philipp Pagel Tel. +49-89-3187-3675 Institute for Bioinformatics / MIPS Fax. +49-89-3187-3585 GSF - German National Research Center for Environment and Health http://mips.gsf.de/staff/pagel -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Switch to external monitor defunct in KDE
Hello everyone! I have tried to find help on this issue in comp.windows.x.kde but have gotten no response so far. So I'm reposting my problem here... I am running Debian Sarge with KDE 3.3.2 and kernel 2.6.11.6 on my Thinkpad A21m laptop. On this machine I can switch to an external monitor or beamer by pressing FN-F7. This works fine if I am in the console or when running fvwm or Gnome. It also used to work in KDE a while back. Recently (probably after a Debian upgrade), this feature stopped working in KDE. The only way to get the desired result is to log out, kill the X-server with CRTL-ALT-DEL and quickly hit FN-F7 before KDM is launched. (Yes, the problem appears even before loggin in). So I guess, some component of KDE, KDM or KWIN or ... is doing something that prevents the switch. I had a close look at all kinds of settings in the KDE Control Center, the XF86config-4 and a few other config files without much success. Google didn't seem to bring up relevant hits either (maybe I didn't find the right phrases...). I checked the usual suspects in /var/log/ and .xsession-errors but couldn't find any messages that seemed related. I'd be greatfull for any hints where to look for the problem and how to make this work again. cu Philipp -- Dr. Same here - I am the only user of my laptop. Still, I really do not want to do my normal work as root because of security. As normal user I don't have the power to destroy the system and even more important - the programs I run do not have root access - so an evil browser plugin or Openoffice crash cannot harm the system. One of the reasons why viruses and worms spread so quickly on Windows systems is that most users work with administrator privileges. If I need root access I use sudo (and less ofter su). And I really only need to become root for things like system upgrades or configuration of new hardware.
+49-89-3187-3675 Institute for Bioinformatics / MIPS Fax. +49-89-3187-3585 GSF - German National Research Center for Environment and Health http://mips.gsf.de/staff/pagel -- Haeufig gestellte Fragen und Antworten (FAQ): http://www.de.debian.org/debian-user-german-FAQ/ Zum AUSTRAGEN schicken Sie eine Mail an [EMAIL PROTECTED] mit dem Subject unsubscribe.
