### Como se pode ser, tbm não consegui. Tentei tbm com um adaptador usb com chip RTL8187. Pesquisas indicam que, não funciona usando o driver nativo. Sugerem que se use o ndiswrapper. Pode tentar compilar o driver fornecido para própria realtek, terá que compilar (se conseguir) o modulo do kernel. Consegui compilar o driver do Realtek para o 8187b , mas ele não só não funcionou como acabou por DELETAR minha interface wlan0 ... sumiu, desapareceu... 1) Bom se vc quer começar a aprender eu recomendo um LiveCD tipo Kurumin (que é Debian) ou Ubuntu ... assim vc teria mais facilidade de fazer algum aprendizado até que usar o Linux ficasse mais fácil, outra alternativa seria usar um sistema virtual instalado em cima do MSWin ou ainda um dual boot (que hoje em dia fica super fácil de fazer) 2) No seu ifconfig não aparece nenhuma interface de rede, isso quer dizer que seu modem não está prepardo para falar com exterior de seu computador 3) lspci lista o modelo de seu modem, isso geralmente é bom sinal de que ele esteja instalado e sendo reconhecido pelo Debian. Ao contrário do MSWin a maioria dos periféricos (placas, modens, som, vídeo) já vem com os drivers instalados no Kernel, e quanto mais velho o modelo mais fácil a probabilidade de isso ser verdade), mas o GRANDE problema desses modens que vem com o computador é que a maioria (99%) são WINMODENS isso quer dizer que ele precisa tanto da placa (energia, recursos elétricos) quanto do MSWin e seus infames registros e .dll para funcionar. So I got as a present a Laptop, the giver was aware that I don´t use M$ anymore for some time now (about 5years) and she (my wife) did this as a surprise in the coming of our new baby girl (she took pity at my old Laptop - witch Toshiba should buy me up for historical purposes). This means she baught me a Linux running box (!!). But it also means that I did not choose the hardware, and have no heart to tell her it is CRAP! It all started when I booted the thing and it started a Mandriva 2008.0 (2008? - you got to be kidding me) It took me about 10 minutes to download the latest Debian Testing no.1 CD and start what would be my first 64bit OS :))) After installing the screen resolution sucked (800x600 in 16bit) this is when I started to look at the box with that don´t you go naughty on me boy look I learned from my mother ;-) I quickly switched to xorg.conf edited some Modeline and was up and running a 1280x768 24bit X (about 2 hours work - I tried first to install my SiS driver from source, but it wouldn´t compile on Testing -- seems the missing file is Sid only) Ok now I installed all my necessary packages and took out the net cable - I wanted to go upstairs and see my daughter, but was downloading a movie. Suddenly the wireless stops. Tried to reconnect and it gave me a wrong password error in ' wicd '. Weird, must be a coincidence and started checking my router ... everything fine there all other wireless gadgets running smoothly (including old dinosaur laptop - Debian Testing updated in a i386 kernel). Then I discovered that wireless WAS working, but in a very peculiar way: when I am 2-3 meters form router it connects at normal speed and very easily, but farther form this distance it just doesn´t seem able to CONNECT, but it still correcly scans and finds the wireless networks. Sometimes I can take the connection with me upstairs, but it´s not reproductable enough to make it a pseudo-fix. I thought it maybe the card, but then would it connect when I am standing besides the router? Thought it to be wpa-supplicant but the same holds true as with the card ... my guess it has something to do with POWER SAVING. I've done the following: cd /newroot (newroot contains a minimal system from initrd, dev/console, dev/null and old-root are available unter newroot/) exec dev/console dev/console 21 pivot_root . old-root exec chroot . bin/sh umount -n old-root but I always get: device is busy - so I can't umount the old root. /proc/mounts shows that the proc fs is still mounten under old-root/proc and an umount old-root/proc doesn't work either (device is busy, too). I also tried to umount proc before doing the pivot_root, but no luck either. Why doesn't pivot_root remove the proc mountpoint from old-root? As I understand the documentation - it should clear all dependencies so that the old-root can be unmounted afterwards... Any ideas or suggestions to help would be great! K. It all started when I booted the thing and it started a Mandriva 2008.0 (2008? - you got to be kidding me) It took me about 10 minutes to download the latest Debian Testing no.1 CD and start what would be my first 64bit OS :))) After installing the screen resolution sucked (800x600 in 16bit) this is when I started to look at the box with that don´t you go naughty on me boy look I learned from my mother ;-) I quickly switched to xorg.conf edited some Modeline and was up and running a 1280x768 24bit X (about 2 hours work - I tried first to install my SiS driver from source, but it wouldn´t compile on Testing -- seems the missing file is Sid only) Ok now I installed all my necessary packages and took out the net cable - I wanted to go upstairs and see my daughter, but was downloading a movie. Suddenly the wireless stops. Tried to reconnect and it gave me a wrong password error in ' wicd '. Weird, must be a coincidence and started checking my router ... everything fine there all other wireless gadgets running smoothly (including old dinosaur laptop - Debian Testing updated in a i386 kernel). Then I discovered that wireless WAS working, but in a very peculiar way: when I am 2-3 meters form router it connects at normal speed and very easily, but farther form this distance it just doesn´t seem able to CONNECT, but it still correcly scans and finds the wireless networks. Sometimes I can take the connection with me upstairs, but it´s not reproductable enough to make it a pseudo-fix. I thought it maybe the card, but then would it connect when I am standing besides the router? Thought it to be wpa-supplicant but the same holds true as with the card ... my guess it has something to do with POWER SAVING. This time I plan to keep better track of what I have installed so that the packages can be purged easily when I am finished with the application. So the intention is to get rid of some packages you've installed for experimentation purposes? In that case, you might want to ask for a list of packages which are not marked as auto-installed. This should only list the packages you've exlicitly asked to install, so it should be a reasonably short list, which you can then review manually to decide what to remove. Sadly, I can't think off-hand of a command that will list the packages that are installed and aren't marked auto-installed. Can anyone help? Ok the bigger problem you should have is what is a base system You could run in another box a installation and get a list of the basic system packages, but what do you want the box for? give us a user case and we would try to sort this mess out for you. Definitely purging X is a must -- that will take down about 90% of the flavour packages and none of the essential stuff, could you not start there ? Do you need SQL ? Mail ? Apache ... etc ... A use case would be great ... or is this a experiment?
