Did you download it with mozilla? There was a time around 0.9.1 (I

Anyway, use file ae_962.orig.tar.gz to get a definite answer on what

Re: apache doubt

2001-05-19 Thread Rolf Schillinger
Hi,
it depends on what you are trying to do. This message normally means that
the directory you wanna access (if you just do http://localhost/ it is the
DocumentRoot in httpd.conf) doesn`t have a index.html or whatever type is
configured in DirectoryIndexes in httpd.conf and additionally the Option
Indexes directive is not set for that directory. If this is set for the
dir in question apache will return a directory listing.

Re: DVD movie hardware requirements

Hi,
you could have chances to get dvds working ok if you use a different
software. I currently have PIII-450 w/256Mb and xine is ready to play dvds
just perfect since quite some time. My gfx card is a G400 with 32Mb video
ram tho. Anyway checkout xine.sourceforgge.net and
xine.cjb.net. Installation is quite painless and it works *very*
good. Important performance factors are the X version (X4 here) and Xv
too. Also using raw devices gives some performance gain. All that tuning
measures are provided on those websites and you can use the Wiki Wiki
Web on www.linuxvideo.org as well for some tuning tips. After applying
all these tuning steps my CPU is now at ~ 60% load while playing dvds
seamlessly.

Re: What are the most common causes of linux system hangs?

2000-04-14 Thread Rolf Schillinger
Hi,
if you suspect the mem to be faulty try compiling a kernel. This is a very
memory intensive process and if the memory is faulty chances are you get
the dreaded sig11.
hth, Rolf

On Fri, 14 Apr 2000, Joe Emenaker wrote:

Aka... why is my system so well hung? :)

Every now and then, I'll have a Debian box that starts having fits of hard
system hangs. Sometimes, it goes away when I turn off a daemon. Other times,
it goes away when I put the hard drives in an entirely different computer.

Currently, I'm having this problem with one. Just... out of the blue, it
will hang dead in its tracks. The keyboard doesn't even wake the screen so I
can see if there are any kernel panic messages or anything. Ctrl-Alt-Del
doesn't do anything. I have to hit the rest button.

It doesn't seem to matter what's running becuase I've tried turning almost
all of the daemons (except cron and a couple of others) off, and it still
hung. It's happening more and more frequently, too. It used to be able to go
for a week or two. Now, it barely makes it more than 4 hours or so.

Now, I'm pretty certain that it's some hardware problem. But, I'd like to
avoid moving the whole system to a brand-new machine, find that the problem
has gone away, and conclude that there's just *something* bad about the old
server and that I need to chuck the whole thing.

So, I'd like to isolate the problem, if I could.

With that in mind, does anyone have any personal experience concerning what
the problem usually is in these cases? Motherboard? RAM? Has it ever helped
 anyone to *under*clock the CPU?

 I'm anxious for any ideas

Is it normal, or I have a serious problem? Maybe a not well tuned

Re: Bar Code Scanner in Linux

2000-02-05 Thread Rolf Schillinger
Hi,
It depends on what bar code scanner you are trying to use.
There are barcode scanners that get inserted beetween the keyboard and the
computer. You can configure these type of scanners usually through reading
in config instructions in form of barcode supplied by the manufacturer.
They then simply send the barcode translated to characters to the computer
just as if you had entered it with the keyboard. So if you use such
scanners you are not going to have any troubles.

 Hi Everyone. . .

I think it's best to start off with the right question. I
have a network of about 25 computers, all on the same class C
(192.168.1.*). I have a Linux box, which is 192.168.1.1, and this
Linux box is going to be the default gateway of every other
machine in this network. So, this Linux box, has to give access
from inside to outside, as in web, ftp or mail requests, and the
linux box has to reply them. I don't know what software I am
supposed to use for this. Someone recommended me IPMasq, but I
think I have a completely wrong concept of ipmasq. UmmmHelp?

You want to use a software that can do NetworkAdressTranslation Port
forwarding.
That basically meansAll traffic coming from your lan goes to your linux
gateway. There the ip-adress is rewritten as beeing 192.168.1.1 and the
datagrams are sent out to the net. Say the packets then go to a web
server, the webserver in return sends some packets to your internet gateway.
Now comes the tricky part. Your gateway must know to what ip on your
local net the packets must go. It does this based on the ports the
request from your client in the lan came from.
ipmasq was in older kernels the software that did this.
Now it is called ipchains.
There is some quite good documentation out there now including various
howtos and tutorials on that topic.
Cheers, Rolf
