I just happened to have downloaded and opened it, Bob. It
ran. I'll go through it to see what I can find as soon as I get
Netscape up here. Thanks, Bob!

Actually, you'll have to upgrade the libgtk1 package to at least 0.99.7-4.
This fixed the problem for me

libgtk1_0.99.7-2.deb is on the site (currently) and on this machine...did
it via dselect ftp. It's still a no-go here with error:
gimp: error in loading shared libraries
/usr/lib/libgtk.so.1: undefined symbol: XListInputDevices

dselect should have purged the old files. Does libgtk.so.1 look
like an old file, or a new one, or are both of the same name? Should
I try forcing a dpkg purge and a dpkg reinstall?

Re: xlib6 missing from hamm?

1998-03-19 Thread alemas

so what are we going to do if the xlib6 maintainer doesn't fix this
soon? are we going to release a distribution without essential
packages? who is going to use that?

I don't think it will happen.

i wouldn't really bet on it. some people these days seem really
 determined to make a point.

Such things are no longer complicated when brought to light,
are they? The many questions can be condensed into few questions,
virtually. Should free software developers write code in harmony,
withholding new features long enough for a release every now and
then so that many others will use it? Or should eternal patience
reign since they aren't getting paid money for it, and gee, *NIX-
like systems are so intriguing when they remain too difficult
for the common consumer to use, anyway (sarcasm on my part)?
I feel sympathy for those who have tried to maintain the shared
libraries if anyone in particular is responsible for them.

Re: hamm/contrib/binary-i386/Packages* files

1998-03-18 Thread alemas
A Red Hat man said, as he took his shoes off to set a spell in our forum:
Why are the hamm/contrib/binary-i386/Packages* files empty? There are files
in that subtree which are needed to successfully install multiple programs
 from the main hamm distribution.

Then a Greenhorn, wet behind the ears, said:
It's really pretty easy if you do from your Debian box instead of
doing it from Winders. I'll help you with it, if you like. I've only
been at this *nix-type stuff for a couple of months or so, and I can do
it, so I know you can do it.

I have switched to Redhat, and will continue using the Redhat distribution
 until this situation is rectified.

I would try another distribution, but once in a while, I like to take
a break from accessing Web sites that are cluttered with ads, and
e-mail lists that are flaming with complaints as some of the others
are.

Actually, I'm quite impressed at the terrific amount and quality
of work put out by the Debian developers. ...looks like they are about
to leave all of the other distributions in the past. They deserve to
take a break. Only a few hours into an upgrade to the new, unstable
version, and I can tell that Debian 2.0 is going to be...ROCK STEADY!

As tiny-elvis would say, I'm just sayin' it's big, man--huge. It
rocks...so to all you Debian developers out there--thank you. Thank
you very much. Heh, heh...

Re: HELP: Newbie needs help with crash

1998-03-05 Thread alemas
Go ahead, and run e2fsck, but read the man page first! I don't guarantee
anything for you here (disclaimer) and am not a LINUX expert, but it did work
for me when I received similar error messages. Read those man pages. If you
can't do so on your Debian LINUX OS, the man pages are on the Web, too, if you
have access to another OS. Actually, I must admit, though, that I proceeded
with e2fsck without reading the man at the time, although I wouldn't suggest
doing so in reaction to _any problem_ for anyone else. :-)

Please note that the root file system is currently mounted read only. To
 remount it write
 #mount -n -o remount,rw /

I remounted as requested and got

 #fsck -r gave same thing.

Then tried #e2fsck /dev/hda2 as advised above and got

 I cautiously responded n. I also tried #rdev -R/vmlinuz 1 which Sobell's

I am now at a standstill. Any help on what to do next would be much
 appreciated.

Smail Solution for Dynamic IP's

1998-02-26 Thread alemas
Daniel offered a solution that seems to me to work very (bo used
on this box, so check it) well, except that I changed the smtp-rewrite
in the /etc/smail/routers file to match what it calls in the
/etc/smail/transports file (smtp-remap). I think I typed both in as
smtp-rewrite. I use elm-me+ and fetchmail (for POP downloads), by
the way.

Also, I think it is important to go to the /etc/smail/config file
and make sure your ISP's domain name (not your full machine name) appears
thusly:
visible_name=ipa.net(mine used as an example here)
-domains
hostnames=alemas.ipa.net --(not sure about this line. Is it correct?)

You gurus on the list please take a look the script below, my
suggestions, and the full header of this message. Then please advise.
If it works, maybe it will be useful in the archive. Thank you.

Re: Smail Solution for Dynamic IP's

1998-02-26 Thread alemas
To clarify something from my last message in regards to the
subject (subject this message, also) at hand, my _machine name_ is
alemas. ipa.net is my ISP's domain. Therefore, my full domain
name on this machine is alemas.ipa.net. My numerical domain
address (e.g., ###.###.###.###) is a different number--only borrowed
from my ISP--each time I log on; it is dynamic. Correct me on
terms or otherwise, if need be, and thank you.

Yes. And your local user name should be same as what you want as
a user name in your e-mail return address (in your case, lee.bradshaw)
until we find a solution for sending from any local (local to your machine)
account. I'm going to try one more tiny change with Daniel's (hope he doesn't
mind) script and get back to you. When we have a complete solution for these
kind of accounts (typical dynamic IP PPP's), what say we collaborate to put
a good tutorial on a Web page? ;-) Then those who have the know-how can
properly format the info for Debian LINUX documentation (or we can learn).
By the way, this one replied to you with no header adjustments.
