Using my phone as modem.

2014-08-07 Thread atar
Hi there!

I have a LG GS500 phone and I want to use it as a modem with debian.

The problem is that when I plug it in to my PC with an USB cable and try to
connect through it to the Internet with the NetworkManager program, at the
first few seconds I succeed to surf the Internet but after a few seconds the
connection is terminated by the pppd daemon because the device didn't respond
to 4 echo requests. When I try to disconnect and then reconnect by the
NetworkManager program it says that the connection could not be established.
I've tried to reconnect through wvdial but it says that the modem is hung up.

Is anyone here have an idea how to solve this trouble?

Regards,

Atar.

USB hub problem.

2014-01-05 Thread atar

Hi there!

I've a Toshiba USB 3.0 hard disk drive and when I attach it directly to
the USB controller on my PC I succeed to mount it without any problem, but
surprisingly, when I attach it to my PC via a 4-port USB hub, things get
complicated.

For some reason, the system registers the hard disk drive as a character
device under the name: '/dev/sg3' and the mount command refuses to mount
it and emits the following error messages:

Error reading bootsector: Illegal seek
Failed to sync device /dev/sg3: Invalid argument
Failed to mount '/dev/sg3': Illegal seek

What should I do in order to be able to mount the HDD via the USB hub too?

Regards,

atar.

Re: Re: USB hub problem.

2014-01-05 Thread atar

Hi!

Thanks for replying!

As per your question, the USB hub has not a jack for an external power
supply since it is designed to receive all its power from the USB bus
itself. moreover, the HDD itself is powered solely on the bus power. But I
think you're likely to be correct since Microsoft Windows XP is also not
able to mount the HDD when it is attached via the hub. apparently those
devices need a hub with external power supply to provide them with their
power consumption requirements.

The glib development library is probably only the first missing

others that will also need to be installed.

Try installing all of the build dependencies for the building the

Re: Re: Re: Fwd: install packages without verification SOLVED.

2013-08-06 Thread atar

The package debian-archive-keyring contains the archive key that
verifies the packages. If your system is complaining that it can't
verify the package then the cause is almost always an outdated
debian-archive-keyring package.

Verify that the package is up to date.

 # apt-get update
 # apt-get install debian-archive-keyring
 # apt-get update

The second apt-get update is needed after debian-archive-keyring is
upgraded in order to do the verify.

Hi there!!

I've installed the package you've suggested and loaded all of its modules

this didn't solve the problem since the 'wicd' network manager which I use

Yes, I've reconfigured Syslinux to load the new kernel image

Note: it's worth to note here that I'm using at the Live version of

I don't know what exactly you want me to describe in more detail, but in
general, I've downloaded the Debian live-boot distro from the Debian

'live-rw' partition in this USB stick in order to preserve the changes I
make in my daily work with this Debian distro.

some weeks after the installation of this Debian distro on my USB stick,
I've ran the command 'apt-get upgrade' to upgrade the packages which are
installed on my machine. since this upgrade (I think so, however...) I
cannot mount vfat filesystems and when I try to run 'modprobe vfat' it
emits an error message and tell me to look at the output of the 'dmesg'
