/etc/modules.conf is more recent than /lib/modules/2.2.12/modules.dep
Hi, I have only recently upgraded my kernel to 2.2.12. The error below is returned after trying to install a new module: Note: /etc/modules.conf is more recent than /lib/modules/2.2.12/modules.dep opl3sa: dma, irq and io must be set. /lib/modules/2.2.12/misc/opl3sa.o: init_module: Device or resource busy /lib/modules/2.2.12/misc/opl3sa.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.2.12/misc/opl3sa.o failed /lib/modules/2.2.12/misc/opl3sa.o: insmod opl3sa failed Installation failed. At boot I noticed that I receive the same error from /etc/modules.conf This is a sample: ipx Note: /etc/modules.conf is more recent than /lib/modules/2.2.12/modules.dep NET4: Linux IPX 0.38 for NET4.0 IPX Portions Copyright (c) 1995 Caldera, Inc. kernelcapi Note: /etc/modules.conf is more recent than /lib/modules/2.2.12/modules.dep bsd_comp Note: /etc/modules.conf is more recent than /lib/modules/2.2.12/modules.dep PPP: version 2.3.7 (demand dialling) PPP line discipline registered. Can anyone tell me what I am missing? Thanks, bw.

Hi, Thanks for the prompt reply. I have a few more questions if you are willing to answer them. Then run update-modules. -- Jean Pierre Thanks again, bw.
Kernel version 2.2.12: isapnp builtin or newbie fluke?
Hi, I have some funkiness happening. Does the new kernel have automatic support for isapnp cards? The reason I ask is, I was having some trouble with modconf,etc... Perhaps you will recall the thread posted Re: /etc/modules.conf is more recent than /lib/modules/2.2.12/modules.d Well... while attempting to resolve some boot-time error msgs with isapnp, (i renamed isapnp.conf and rebooted) i discovered to my delight that my PnP modem still functioned and that ALL the error msgs regarding both 'isapnp' and 'modules.conf' had been eliminated. The only weird part is, it didn't find my PnP soundcard. Still... :) Mind you, I also downgraded the 'modconf' and 'modutils' packages to modconf 0.2.26 modutils 2.3.5-1 Can somebody explain what I have done right so that I may duplicate this in the future? :) Thanks, bw

If it's internal, it may be that your PC's bios is configuring it for you (this might happen if you have a setting in the bios PnP OS Installed set to No). No. I had my modem setup under isapnp before the kernel upgrade. I do have a PnPbios, but it didn't work intil i did the upgrade. so, you are probably right in this respect. However... This might also be the cause of your soundcard problems. The Bios can only go so far with configuring isapnp devices - it can handle something simple like a modem (just an irq and base i/o), but throw something e.g. an Awe64 at it and it will fail. This failed attempt to configure the card in Bios can render it uncofigurable by snippy isapnptools. When you do this, and replace your isapnp.conf file, do you get any error messages during boot? No. I setup the module for the sound card a nd config'd it with isapnp with little difficulty. However... Now I get virtually no signal coming through the card. Even though my cdrom is hardwired to the card, I get barely any volume coming through it. 'dev/audio' does the same. It works, but its barely audible. Any ideas? You should also upgrade your modconf / modutils files and try to fix them properly. Yes. This is lazy of me. I still got the error when I installed the module but it seemed to load. Anyhow, thanks for the help. bw

dpkg procedure
Hi, I am a newbie and have never installed a .deb package by hand so I am a bit weary a to proper procedure. I understand the different steps involced in making the istallation feasible, but I am rather apprehensive as to what will happen after I complete the install. For example: If I do... dpkg -i nmap_2.12-3.deb ...from a users home directory will it install it and configure it properly, or will it install it into that directory? I have read the man pages regarding this, but have been unable to determine if I am going to make a mistake. Is there anyone who can outline just the basics of the procedure and perhaps some pitfalls to watch out for. Thanks. sincerely, bwarsing.

Cron: daemon.log grep mail to root
Hi, I'm a newbie, butI need to set up cron to grep the auth attempts from /var/log/daemon.log and mail me (root) the results daily. Can anyone suggest a means of doing this? As it stands, it only logs weekly. As well, if there is anyone who can point me to some good info on using cron effectively, I would appreciate it. Thanks, bw.

NMAP on dselect sites
Hi, I want to upgrade my 'nmap' to the latest version, however the Debian sites seem to have let the package slide. Does anyone know if there is a mirror with the latest Debain nmap package. Alll the ones I have seen are version 1.51. It's very old. Thanks, bw
.profile BASH in PATH?
Hi, I have 2 perhaps simple questions: 1. The only user on my system who has a ~/.profile is root. It had to have been generated during installation. So I am left to wonder, how do I create a ~/.profile for each user as well as subsequent users. 2. Also, when I want execute a shell script, why am I forced to do... bash shell.script Is this related to my PATH configurations? Sorry if these seem like banal questions but I am still a newbie. Thanks, bwarsing

Internet News Scheme
Hi, Can anyone suggest some sort of scheme for setting up an operable news reader and server? I am quite new to *nix in general and don't fully grasp all the concepts to setting up a functioning service. I have tried 'innd' and found it quite a handful, as well as 'newsx' for a read-er which didn't work at all. Perhaps there is an easier way to get started in all of this? Any help, even of the most general kind, would be appreciated. thanks, brian.
Re: Fetchmail--SMTP connect to localhost failed
From: Kent West I can send mail from this box to my own account on this box, as well as to my account on my ISP (university campus). I think I've tried every permutation on the qualify_domain and local_domains lines in exim.conf, but either I haven't hit the right combination or it's got something to do with other lines in that file (or something completely different). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Hi Kent, I had the same problem. Here is what I did... Set exim.conf with: (BTW, no quotes) 'qualify_domain = my.isp.whatever' -- so that it will attach my proper address upon external mailing 'qualify_recipient = mycomputername' -- to let exim know that unqualified recipient names should be local 'local_domains = mycomputername' -- so that I can send mail internally to different users 'local_domains_include_host = true' 'local_domains_include_host_literals = true' -- so that exim allows mail to be delivered internally via any of the above hosts If you generated your exim.conf via 'eximconfig' for dialup users, the rest of the configuration should do just fine. The next step is... Disable the 'exim' file in your /etc/init.d by opening the file and commenting out the lines with '#', naturally... Set exim to run as a daemon from /etc/inetd.conf by editing my MAIL category to look like this... #:MAIL: Mail, news and uucp services. #off#uucp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/sbin/in.uucpd smtp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/exim /usr/sbin/exim -bd Now... as for fetchmail... run the attached little script as root to generate yourself a '.fetchmailrc' Don't bother with 'fetchmailconf' it just makes a mess of things if you don't know how to use it. I guess that goes for me too. By default the script will set your 'mda' to be 'procmail'. This must be tweaked to read: mda /usr/sbin/exim -odb root For test purposes, I would suggest not using the option 'fetchall' until you are certain that you have it working otherwise you may destroy any mail that you have in your mailbox. Always test before you 'fetchall'. Read the docs for fetchmail to find out about any further options you think you might want. Good Luck, brian. fetch.tar.gz Description: GNU Zip compressed data
