can't get files for binary-i386-1_NONUS (potato)

2001-09-06 Thread c-3
Hi!

I'm trying to create a pseudo-image of the official binary-i386-
1_NONUS disc (potato). I already downloaded about 630 MB, but I
wasn't able to get following files, because I couldn't find them on
any server:

/doc/FAQ/html/ch-compat.html

/doc/FAQ/html/ch-software.html
/doc/FAQ/html/ch-support.html

Is there perhaps something I haven't noticed?

Like an idiot, I accidentally wrote a LILO boot into my windows partition, so
nw booting from my LILO to windows (on /dev/hda3) starts up another LILO that
 croaks with
 LI
is there a way to be able to boot windows again?

The easiest way I think is to boot with a DOS boot disk and make

module problem

2001-02-20 Thread c-3
Hi!

Can anybody tell me how (or where) the location of modules are
referenced?
Because I compiled and installed some modules, but if I try insmod
module name I get a message that the module couldn't be found.
But perhaps it's just a very dumb reason.

Well, I'm new to Linux, too, and the first time I tried to install

Sadly I still have to run Windows, because there are no

Windows. If there would be, no one could hold me from freeing that

i must confess I just managed to get my sound
card to work. I was wondering how to subscribe to
napsterI am guessing because of the legal case
against napster that one can not subscribe? I notice
that newsgroups have a lot of files... any advice on
how to find interesting sounds/music etc.

I wasn't aware that they weren't accepting new accounts and/or users.

Some days ago a friend of mine had the same problem, not being
able to subscribe to napster. I just gave him my username and
password and surprisingly we both could use napster at the same
time, with the same username. But it does make sense, because
the only thing that seems to matter is the ip adress.
Anyway, it's surprising for me, that they don't check for already
used usernames.
But I won't complain. ;)

Napster uses multiple servers, upwards of (50), I believe. I'd guess
each one is pretty much stand-alone. They don't have ONE central
authentication location. So, you and your friend may have been logged
into seperate servers. Could you see each other ?? Probably not, huh ?

Of course there are many servers (never mind how much), but I just
didn't take into account that they are not synchronized.

Depends on the speed of the medium from which you read the kernel,
and the speed of the processor.

If the processor can decompress faster than the medium can read, it makes
 sense to compress the image.

And is there a way to compile a non compressed kernel image?

RE: Wake Up on LAN

For WOL you need to know the node adress of the network card in

get it by winipcfg. But can someone tell me how to get it under

I think I wasn't too harsh or something.
But rebooting in order to see if the sound card was detected at
boot-time is about the most dumb reason to reboot I can think of.

Yes, it is, when you know where to get the information elsewere.
But right now I'm still having the problem not to know where I can
get which information.

I didn't compile it as a module, because one told me it would be
better to compile it direcect into the kernel. And so I did.

Where does it say so? I have heard from many people that they were told
 not to use modules.

Ok, I will try to compile it as module, I just thought it would be better to
have it permanent embeded into the kernel.

Please don't CC me, I am reading the list.
 Phil

Sorry, I'm used to send it to both list and respondant, because
some people are not permanently reading the list. But if that's a
problem to you I won't do that to you in future.

How did you try to load it? modprobe?
 Was it loaded? ($/sbin/lsmod)

If you use a kernel module you simply need to load it (maybe adjust
mixer settings) and it should work. There is certainly no need for a

(newbie) how can I change the display resolution???

2001-01-15 Thread c-3
Hi!

Can anybody help me how to change my display resolution?
Right now I just have 640*480 with (I think) 16bpp, but I would like
to have 1024*768 with at least 16bpp.
Is it right that I just have to change something in the etc/XF86Conf ?
I didn't change the values so far, because I don't want something to
damage.

I'm using a Diamond Viper 330 with 4MB RAM and a Fujitsu 17
Monitor (Type TE767B)
with a sync range of 100-240 (hor) and 50-60 (vert) (at least that's
printed on it's label).

Thanks in advance for any help!

how can I add disk space?

2000-10-05 Thread c-3
Hello!

I've got a samba-file-server whichs disk resources are getting very
low, so I have to add new disk space.
I've already tried to install a new HD and mounted it into /home
(where all my samba datas are being saved). But the problem is
now all datas are only written on the new HD instead of useing the
disk space of both HDs.
There must be a way to use both HDs' disk space, isn't there one?
