the last update of possible updates, suggested by apt-show-versions -u
on my KDE-jessie system
today with the command
aptitude -f install `apt-show-versions -u|cut -d: -f1|grep testing|xargs`
installed repro ejabberd.
checking with aptitude why for ejabberd repro didn't gave any reasons.
not that I'm not interested in federated sip – in fact, I'm playing with
that on my server, but how esoteric did aptitude got that it know that? ;)
or is there a bigger plan that every debian-installation is a fed. VOIP
box? running it's own jabber server and sip proxy?
can anybody shed some light on this please?

Were you unable to get to iceweasel when you clicked on a link in icedove or were you able to get to iceweasel home page but not the actual link you were trying to open? I appreciate your comments and want to get this darned thing fixed but need to know I'm working on the right thing. I can get to iceweasel but I always get the home page. I don't get the specific link I'm trying for. Oh, and I figued out why I did not see that actual line as mentioned. I was looking at prefs.js from the command line using cat prefs.js. When looking at the file in that manner all you get are those which have content and are marked true and I didn't find out how to change it until I went to the config editor button in preferences-Advanced- General-config editor. I had to got to the KDE systemsettings and manually change the file association (program which is called) entry to iceweasel %u (or x-www-browser %u, setting up the system alternatives to iceweasel.) for all http/https. I've found most of what you mentioned and have made changes but I still only get my home page in Iceweasel, not the link in the email I clik on. Is that what you get? Can you get to Iceweasel but not to the exact link? that was the initial erroneous behaviour. things changed with setting file-associations to x-www-browser %u in the systemsettings. see point 1. above. I'm at a loss. my advice: check the file-associations, so that x-extension-*html, etc. call either iceweasel directly with a %u as parameter, or use the x-www-browser %u mechanisem. to set your system-default browser there, go to a shell and enter the following command: sudo update-alternatives --config x-www-browser choose iceweasel or whatever you want to use. to check, whether that works, you can call x-www-browser http://google.com from a shell. iceweasel (or what ever you did set with the command above) should open google.com I've found some info in bugtracking but it's from 2007 and it's talking about not getting to iceweasel. Again, I can get to Iceweasel but not the exact link. I didn't find any useful information there... TIA for your help. hi everybody, Just checking to see if others are having the same problem. yes indeed. I had 2 mailthreats about this on the debian-user-german. 1. icedove does not open external links. it opened the browser, but did not handover the URL. I had to got to the KDE systemsettings and manually change the file association (program which is called) entry to iceweasel %u (or x-www-browser %u, setting up the system alternatives to iceweasel.) for all http/https. 2. I changed in the .icedove/profile/prefs.js user_pref(network.protocol-handler.external.http, true); to true. while callening external links does work now, it had a major impact on beeing able to add new accounts to ID. while checking a new imap/smtp server, a link opened in iceweasel, trying to get info about the mail-server. in this case, I used self-signed certificates on my dovcot-server and STARTTLS. switching this value back to false, I can add new mailservers, but not open external links. for the time being, I have to choose, which misbehaviour I can live with at the moment. my system: wheezy,amd64 KDE 4.8.4 iceweasel 10.0.6esr-1 icedove 10.0.5-1 günter -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. plasma desktop hangs on a not-so-lousy network-connection
hi everybody, since a while now (at least a year), KDE does have the following behavior: while the WLAN-connection is stable, every thing is good. moving my laptop (i.e. to the terrasse) where it often still has a 50% signal, the pbls. begin: while it rechecks/reconnect to the wlan, plasma hangs (menues, systray, etc all frozen, kwin still is responsable, can move windows) for a minute or 2! that happens on movment and also, while I don't move the box - just out of the sky on rechecking the connection. first, I used Network-Manager + plasmoid, which often was not able to reconnect. I had to manual stop the manager, sometimes reload the module restart the manager, then wait till KDE realises, that there is network again. after it had lost the connection once, it's keeping me asking over and over for the WLAN-secret, which was already in kwallet and too often, the only way out was to complety remove the connection and configure it new. then I moved to WICD, (for the price of loosing my comfortable VPN's setup). WICD is MUCH more stable, never asks for the password but still hangs plasma now and then. but seems to be 80% more stable. since I swapped hardware 4 weeks ago, it dosen't look like a driver/module-pbl. to me. (b43 before, iwlwifi now). I also see this on some laptops of friends, all KDE 4.4 - 4.8, wheezy. and I checked it with three different WLAN-routers - all same behavior. so, even if it's a driver-/network-pbl. the basic line here: plasma should definitly NOT freeze on a lost network connection. running on KDE-SC 4.8.4, wheezy, wicd 1.7.2.4-2, wicd-kde 0.3.0-2 kernel 3.0 ... .3.5-rc2 (all show the same behavior) all I see in the syslog is: wlan dropped connection and is trying to reconnect for a while. any hint's, how to prevent KDE from freezing? anybody sees the same behavior? and who get's the bug-report? kde for freezing?, kernel for dropping, one (or both) of the network-managers? cheers, günter log starts, with unpluging my ext. hi, same here. the browser - mostly rekonq - freezes the complete box independen of the uptime. once, I have been waiting more then 2 h w/o any result. it seems that it likes to freeze on youtube and googlevideo more often, after opening a few (1-4) tabs. I have the manually load module enabled in setup, so that it does not start the flash-plugin right away without clicking the load module button on the displayed page. I use the latest flash-nonfree. this happend on squeeze and the actual wheeze/testing. and at the moment, I can't remote login, cause I don't have another box cheers günter Am Mittwoch, 9. servus, wieso verwendest Du @euro ? Das gibt es doch garnicht... das kam von dpkg --configure locales. hab da beim einrichten (am ende einer langen nacht) wohl nicht mehr zu genau hingesehen. Wie ? - Du rufst uxterm nicht direkt auf ? Ich habe dafuer einen Button... Warum sollte ich die Das terminal von KDE aufrufen wenn ich uxterm haben will ? - Debian wird immer eigenartiger... ich verwende konsole, nicht uxterm nur zum testen hab ich uxterm aufgerufen, um zu sehen ob die shell funktioniert, da alle anderen kde anwendungen - auer konsole - ja richtig darstellen. Ich bin gerade mit mutt in uxterm und es fehlen so einige Zeichen das testfile UTF-8-demo.txt aus dem ucs-fonts packet wird unter uxterm richtig dargestellt. dazu noch die bemerkung, da ich dieses noch installiert habe, in der vermutung das die shipped fonts nicht i.o. seien. ich hab UTF-8-demo.txt angehngt Was steht bei die in den Xresources zu UXTerm drin ? hallo rolf, ohne jetzt das howto zu lesen, hier ein snipset eines replays das ich mal auf linuxtag.org fr knoppix geschreiben habe. alternativ kannst du auch libata verwenden. die untersttzt allerdings momentan keine nativ raids. alternativ kannst du auch auch softwareraids verwenden. libatat ist auch im 2.6 kernel dabei und wird standard. entsprechende versionen findest du unter ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/jgarzik/libata/ 1.) was du als erste brauchst ist ein treiber/source fr dein SATA/Raid controller. dazu finde raus was dein controller fr eine chip benutzt und mach dich auf die suche auf der promise webseite. 2.) bersetze die quellen des treibers, falls du nicht ein zum kernel passendes package bekommst. dazu must du dir die kernelsources installieren, was dann natrlich ohne IDE platte schwierig ist. funktioniert evtl auch auf der ramdisk... wenn nicht, kann ich dir damit evtl helfen. wichtig (und lstig) ist, dass das loadable module immer wieder bei einem versionswechsel des kernels neu compiliert werden mu!!! 3.) hast du das modul fertig kopiere es dir auf diskette!!! bei einem systemcrash, neuinstallation o. kommst du ohne das nicht mehr auf deine platte. +++snip+++ 6.) damit linux den treiber auch beim booten von der platte findet, gehe wie folgt vor. knoppix verwendet zum booten eine initiale ramdisk (initrd) in der das modul geladen werden mu. dazu must du dir die /boot/initrd.gz dekomprimieren: gzip -d /boot/initrd.gz via: mount /boot/initrd /initrd -o loop mounten, das compilierte modul (hier fr den promise chip) ft3xx.o ins modules-verzeichnis kopieren: cp /mnt/floppy/ft3xx.o /initrd/modules und in der datei linuxrc die zeile insmod -f /modules/ft3xx.o einfgen. das ldt dann den treiber fr deinen SATA chip whrend des bootens. hinweis: solltest du dich entschliesen, z.b. xfs als root filesystem zu verwenden, kopiere das modul xfs.o mit folgendem befehl ebenfalls in die initrd (ntig, obwohl der kernel fr xfs vorbereitet sein sollte! ): cp /lib/modules/2.4.22-xfs/kernel/fs/xfs/xfs.o /initrd/modules und trage es mit insmod /modules/xfs.o ebenfalls in die linuxrc ein. mein linuxrc sieht dementsprechend so aus (basis ist die ausgelieferte initrd von knoppix 3.3): #!/static/sh insmod /modules/xfs.o insmod -f /modules/ft3xx.o nun noch die initrd abmounten: cd /; umount /initrd und wieder einpacken: gzip /boot/initrd und lilo aufrufen. sorry kent, mail wasn't send to the list, check out knoppix http://www.knoppix.net or the version from kano (based on knoppix) called kanotix http://www.kanotix.com both are cd-bootables, complete linux with an easy install script, which actualy copies the complete CD (~2.3GB of sw in an compressed filesystem) to HD. voila, around 40 minutes later, you have a running debian system! worked on every from the 8 - 10 PCs i had tried so far. knoppix is a mixture from sarge (testing) and sid (unstable) and kanotix is pure sid, with a couple of fixes, knoppix does not have. they both have a very good forum where one can get help quickly. linux install and use easy from scratch! if even this does not work, you can go screaming! ;-) cheers Guenter Am Fr, den 23.07.2004 schrieb Kent West um 4:07: John Hechtman wrote: I moved from Suse to Slackware, because the stock Suse was WAY slow. You're going to be frustrated no matter what, if you're new to Linux. It's a different world. On the other hand, once you've spent some time here, going back to Windows will frustrate you more. So if you're going to turn back, do it now, before you get spoiled. I can't answer your specific question, but I can tell you that if you have network access, you'll do better to forget the CDs and instead download the 100MB CD image for the new beta Sarge installer, and install just the base stuff, then use the network to pull down what you want. You'll get fresher (newer) packages, and it'll probably go a lot smoother (the new beta installer is better than the old Woody installer).
