how to make a boot disk??

2002-11-29 Thread damar thapa
Hi,

I am now trying to recompile kernel for the first time
in Debian. I do not have a floppy to boot the system
in case the kernel panics. How can I do that in
Debian?

Looking at /etc/lilo.conf, it seems that I have to do,
"dd if=/vmlinuz of=/dev/fd0 bs=8192". But it asks for
root disk, please advise.

Damar

Note: I sent this message yesterday, though I
actually had not subscribed the list. Since I have no
clue whether that went through or not, I am sending
this again. My apology, if the list is going to get
the same message twice.

Re: apache-2.0.42 in debian3.0

Hi,

Yes, it is listening at port 80, at least as per httpd.conf.

Thanks.

apache-2.0.42 in debian3.0

2002-10-01 Thread damar thapa

Hi,

I am compiling apache-2.0.42 under debian3.0.

I did the followings:

   1../configure --prefix=/usr/local/apache2 --enable-module=so
   2.make
   3.make install
   4./usr/local/apache2/bin/apachectl start

All aboves go fine with no error messages, and /usr/local/apache2 dir
gets filled with apache files, but when I try "mozilla localhost" or
"mozilla ipAdress", I get connection refused message.

What next can I do?

Any pointers would be highly appreciated.

Apache+jakarta-tomcat+jakarta-velocity in debian3.0

2002-10-01 Thread damar thapa

Hi,

I have setup Apache and tomcat on debian3.0, now I would like to add
jakarta-velocity on that.

But, everytime, I try to compile velocity with ant, I get the following
error messages:

env:
[echo] java.home = /usr/local/j2sdk1.4.1/jre
[echo] user.home = /root
[echo] java.class.path =
/usr/local/ant/lib/xml-apis.jar:/usr/local/ant/lib/xercesImpl.
jar:/usr/local/ant/lib/optional.jar:/usr/local/ant/lib/ant.jar
::/usr/local/j2sdk1.4.1/lib:/usr/lib:/usr/local/j2sdk1.4.1/lib
/velocity-1.3.jar:/usr/local/j2sdk1.4.1/lib:/usr/lib:/usr/loca
l/j2sdk1.4.1/lib/tools.jar

prepare:

compile:
[javac] Compiling 1 source file to /usr/src/velocity-1.3/bin/classes
   [javac] /usr/src/velocity-1.3/bin/src/org/apache/velocity/servlet/Velo
cityServlet.java:296: cannot resolve symbol
[javac] symbol : method getInitParameter (java.lang.String)

   [javac] 1 error

BUILD FAILED
file:/usr/src/velocity-1.3/build/build.xml:189: Compile failed; see the
compiler error output for details.

Total time: 12 seconds

Since I could not compile 'tomcat-connetors' as well with 'ant', it may
be 'ant' problem. Is there any debian special process I should follow
to setup ant? Has any one on the list setup velocity under debian3.0?

Any pointers would be highly appreciated.

debian3.0 (Woody) login interface - How?

2002-09-12 Thread damar thapa

Hi,

I installed Debian3.0, during which I chose KDE as my
default X Window. Everything works fine, and I like
the login interface, from which I could (i)login as
root (or any users, of course), (ii) Switch to
different X managers, and (iii) most importantly I
could go to text mode login.

Recently I changed my X Window Manager to GNOME,
during which I got different login interface, from
where (i) I cannot login as root and (ii) Therere is
nothing thatlets me into text mode login.

So, I changed back to KDE again, but I still get the
same GNOME login interface.

How can I go back to the original KDE login interface?

Any pointers would be highly appreciated.

Thanks,

Damar

How can I use RPM in debian - 3.0

2002-09-01 Thread damar thapa

Hi,

I am trying to install hpbuilder-4.0-1.i386.rpm (trial
version) in debian 3.0.

When I did 'rpm -ivh hpbuilder-4.0-1.i386.rpm', I get
the following message:

error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - No such
file or directory(2)
error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm

Seems, db3 package has to be installed? When checked
in the debian site, there is only db3-doc package, but
not db3. Where can I find it, if necessary, of course?

What about /var/lib/rpm? what does it mean?

Any pointers would be highly appreciated.

And, is there any kit/kits that can convert .rpm file
to .deb. I saw one in RPM howto from .deb to .rpm.

Thanks.

Damar
