laplink to 286 pc?

2001-05-28 Thread Etienne Grossmann

  Hello,

I have an old 286 w/ msdos and a laptop w/ linux. I would like to
transfer the 286's hard disk to the laptop using the parallel
port.

Does anyone know a way of doing this? I was thinking to use laplink
on the 286 side, but I don't think there's a laplink for linux
(despite various searches).

  Any advice very welcome,

  Etienne

  thank you for the answers.

# If you've got a Windows keyboard, try pressing Ctrl-Windows-F1.

According to 'xev', my 'alt' is 'Alt_L', which I would say is
ok. The left 'Windows' is 'Select' and the right one is
'Mode_switch'. Neither C-Left_Windows-F1 nor C-Right_Windows-F1
changes to console.

I forgot to say that when I do C-M-F1, the terminal freezes : the
mouse and keyboard have no apparent effect, except that C-M-F7
restores control over the terminal.

I guess I'll try to install the usual gnome. The problem is that apt
only sees the helix packages. I'll see if removing the 'extra' cd from
the sources.list does the trick.

  Thanks again for the advice,

Consoles inaccessible w/ Ctl-Alt-FN

2001-04-22 Thread Etienne Grossmann

  Hello,

I can't access the linux consoles through Ctl-Alt-F1 anymore.

I'm running Potato 2.2r2, with Windowmaker and plenty of Ximian
Gnome packages installed. These come from a debian non-free cd
obtained at ftp.hu.debian.org.

I can't recall if I ever was able to access linux consoles since I
installed the Ximian packages. Do users of the vanilla Gnome packages
still have access to the linux consoles?

Thanks in advance for any advice,

  Etienne

is there any way to install on a Debian system the same packages
that are found on another Debian system? The machines are not strictly
equal.

What is /dev/log ?

2000-07-18 Thread etienne grossmann

  Hello,

would anyone know where the file /dev/log comes from?

 ls -l /dev/log
srw-rw-rw-1 root root0 Jul 18 07:46 /dev/log

RTFM is an acceptable answer, especially if the man page is
specified.

  Cheers,

Re: SED question

  Hello,

I am writing a shell script using sed I need to figure out how I can store the
 output of

 grep florida roam.db | sed -e s/^.*\? //g

to a variable. roam.db has entries like, one per line.

 florida: 555-1212

you mean, in a shell variable? In bash and maybe sh this should work :

myvar=`grep florida roam.db | sed -e s/^.*\? //g`

  Hello,

maybe this can help : a site on linux and laptops; you should be able to find
info on specific models.

ps : My general impression is that Toshiba and LInux go along well (source :
that
site, various mailing lists and personal experience on Satellite 210 and Tecra

re: Laptop install Help Needed

1999-03-08 Thread etienne grossmann

  Hello,

 2. I can't get the machine to talk on the network. How do I do this?

Do you have an IP number for the laptop? Your sysadmin should give/lend
you one, and also tell you what the values for broadcast, gateway
are.

I know there are a hundred right answers to this question, I'm
looking for the easiest/quickest ways How do I get 3c575
support? I'm not sure I'm up to compiling a kernel yet. Should I

As of the pcmcia 2.9.6, driver I am not sure 3c575 is
supported. 3c589 is. I am not sure, but hamm/slink may have built-in
pcmcia support.

consider other pcmcia cards that I have access to like NE200 or
3c589, or is pcmcia problematic and should I look for a pocket
 adatper or something else?

 3. Once I get the network working should I use NFS or FTP to access
the packages? (are there important pro's and con's of each?)

It may be easier to do it by ftp, because for nfsm, your sysadmin
will need to give you mount authorization on a server.

  Hope that helps,
