There were numerous problems associated with the BIOS (ver. 1.00). Since then Tyan has fixed all known problems; and then, they released the new version (S2915-E). Without being aware of this, I previously obtained the S2915 (about a year ago) thinking that it supported quad-core processors. My mistake for not checking Tyan web site prior to purchasing it, but because I found it cheap on eBay, as in retrospect I was sure the previous owner tried to get rid of it. I encountered various problems from not being able to successfully boot into Linux to BIOS configuration issues that underrated the CPU performance. In fact, without knowing the support issue, I first tried to put two quad-core processors only to find out the system did not boot. Originally, I used two dual-core 2216 (2.6GHz) and found various strange inconsistent benchmark scores by SiSoft Sandra XII (2008). The CPU's Arithmetic and Multimedia scores were so low that I was forced to suspect they were due to software compatibility. Any package instillation breaks libraries.
I am having a very annoying issue at the moment. any time i install a package via apt / synaptic / aptitude my internet connection fails. this issue is beyond me. but so far i have narrowed it down to the shared libraries folders going bad. i have a stable backup of my system that i have been copying over to my machine each time it fails. frist was a full system restore except /home. next i restored only /etc /lib /lib32 /lib64 and /usr. this latest restore i only copied the libraries in /lib /lib32 /lib64 and the usr folder libs. can anyone help me move past this issue. i dont know how installing some random package could destroy lib used by the internet connection or iceweasel. how can i avoid this issue and still be able to install packages? all packages are being pulled from the debian lenny repository... -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Perhaps if your new drive is connected externally you should change that to sdb, run grub-install, and then change it back... I really am not sure about that. grub is the bootloader, and runs soon after the BIOS; without it installed your system will not boot. but if it were installed on the copy from drive, shouldn't it then also be installed on the copy to drive? all the config files were there. Also, your laptop might not support booting from USB and booting likely will not work through the adapter interface anyway. Of course you might have installed the disk in the laptop, in which case the previous paragraph applies. oddly enough it does. i was poking around in the BIOS this morning and the usb is indeed a boot option. not what i wanted, but it is there. i have successfully gotten the new larger drive to boot and load up my old debian configurations. since i could not get grub-install to work, even with chrooting in, i ended up installing minimal debian on the empty larger drive [installed in the system]. after setting the partitions there and having the installer setup grub i shut the system down and swaped out the drives. with the larger drive as external i cp -arv all the folders except /proc onto the larger externally connected drive. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Then there are hardware issues. Sometimes there is a system partition or a host protected area where stuff is stored, and there are special migration procedures needed to avoid loss of hardware functionality, etc. You really need to dig into the details with your hardware vendor to check into this possibility. In other words, you're going to need to do your homework and plan this carefully. which is why i wanted to ask the mailing list for tips and help with the issue. One tool which may aide you in the process is the partman utility present in the Debian installer. I believe it has the capability to copy partitions. Whether it can copy between partitions on different hard drives I don't know. I've never tried that scenario, since I've never used it on a machine with more than one hard drive. Also, it doesn't necessarily support all filesystems. Again, you have to do some homework and planning. A Debian live CD may provide more tools, such as gparted. There's no one size fits all five-minute answer. It depends on the exact situation.
