logfiles for shutdown (gdm restarts after starting shutdown)

SOLVED: update to xserver-xorg-core (2:1.6.1.901-3) killed performance
been running what was fairly stable sid system but once i log in to gnome it comes to a screeching halt, with slow redraw and pretty much slow everything else graphically.the xorg-core package was updated this morning and started causing problems immediately after restarting Sid/Squeeze 2.6.30 intel driver with uxa enabled (2:2.7.1-1)) disabled UXA and it's okay again, looks like UXA (which was running pretty well till today) is the culprit. xserver-xorg-core (2:1.6.1.901-3) anyone else having troubles with this update? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Everything works like a charm. I would just prefer to not have to manually add all the programs that I want to use, since I am fairly new to Debian. On a second note, my home computer when I do a full desktop install and when I do the reboot after the installation, as soon as the graphical interface wants to load, I keep getting a Input Not Supported on my screen. This happens when I use either the onboard video or a seperate video card. When I do a manually install as stated above (xorg, kdm, xfce), I can change the screen resolution to 1440x900 @ 75 hz. However, the sync rate is 15 to high (monitor is rated at 60 hz for sync). My home specs are: The monitor seems to be reporting the wrong parameters via DPMS. Jeff as root you can add your username to /etc/sudoers to enable sudo commands or you can try su Debian by default as far as I recall doens't come with sudo set up, whereas Ubuntu uses it instead of a root account. Hence the error in the Ubuntu package. I've not tried Dropbox on Debian (use it for server only), but under Ubuntu 9.04 it works fine (as long as you initially run it with sudo to let it set up what it needs). I don't use the dhcp part, but it works just fine out-of-the-box for dns. The box that connects to my (dialup) modem runs dnsmasq and has all my hosts in /etc/hosts. The other boxes on my network know their own hostname, IP address, and the IP of the box running dnsmasq as the DNS server. Hey, As of Ubuntu 7.04 they have a unified their disks as sdX for both IDE and SATA which is why the 80GB IDE drive is now showing up as a sdX device. As to which becomes sda and which is sdb that is now AFAIK considered to be 'luck' as Ubuntu is moving towards parallel detection which does not guarantee detection order. This is possible as they now use UUIDs to identify all the filesystems: i.e. instead of '/dev/sda' it would be more like UUID=b1f711c3-e86b-4d63-a14f-ec2e2f377a12. IIRC Grub has recently added support for UUIDs too which helps removes reliance on BIOS' disk ordering also. Ubuntu is based on Debian but is a much faster moving distribution. Debian Etch is now several years old and being a stable release no major changes like this would be pushed into it. I haven't looked into it as yet, but If Debian follows the same path then at the very least these changes will not appear until a future release (lenny, sid, squeeze, etc). how is an april 2007 release several years old? i've started using lenny for my work pc and there's a feature of the windows ping.exe that i'm trying to find in linux. something in windows i've used a lot is pinging by hostname to find the ip of the pc i'm looking for. a lot of things i've been doing require me to enter the ip not hostname. i've looked at arping, sing and oping but i haven't had any luck accepting anything other than ip's. all i'm looking for is something along the lines of ~$ hostping -usehostnames computerhostname from the commandline. i'll be using this laptop in a lot of different offices so will i have to add dns info to my /etc/hosts and /etc/resolv.conf for each network? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. There are various tools to deal with changing configurations, you will have to provide more details. Driver compilation question?
I want to get some devices working, but it seems I need to compile the drivers for these particular devices. Q: Is there somewhere that keeps compiled drivers for various versions of the [Debian] kernel to save users from having to download all that source code and fiddle around? FYI: I sent an email a week or two ago to this list which was somewhat wordy but did explain that I need CDs specifically. But I got no replies, probably because it was too wordy, so I decided next time to send a much shorter, more direct set of questions. Sorry for the lack of context that time around! For those curious about why I need CDs... here's the wordy explanation. My Debian machine is at home. It's not on the net, so I needed to install from CD. I'm typing this email from my work PC, which I can't mess with, so I don't have Debian installed on it, so I can't directly use aptitude to download packages. I'm not a Debian guru; I just prefer the environ- ment to Windows. In my spare time, I've written a novel on it, using vi, LaTeX, ps2pdf (and python). But much of my hardware didn't work, e.g. I wanted to use the CD-drive to do scheduled backups, and to be able to print, but I was using an ancient version of Debian which didn't have all the drivers or kernel modules. So I was stuck with a dual-boot Windows solution, which was not ideal. I'd rather not need to boot into Windows ever! I decided to freshly install a more recent version of Debian. So, I downloaded ISO images, and just created the first 2 Debian CDs. This proved to be more than adequate to install a functional base desktop system in under 2GB of disk, but a few things were still missing. I didn't want to create all of the other 12 CDs just to get a few packages, so I thought I'd ask what CDs they are on. Although I can use the web at work to discover package dependencies, I didn't know how to discover which CDs those packages are on. In my case, the answer seems to be disk 3, and the link http://www.debian.org/CD/jigdo-cd/#search lets you search for specific files. So I now have a two stage process I can use to find all the dependencies, then find the CDs they are on. (Since my PC's apt database only knows about the first two CDs which it has been exposed to, it had no way of telling me to insert CD 3 when I want LaTeX. Indeed, there was no way inside aptitude to select LaTeX... it's not listed yet.) I didn't know this online search facility existed, so I think that will solve my problems. Installation: esd and latex?
Hello, I've been installing a Debian 3.1r1 system, burning CDs as necessary. So far I've only used CD 1 and 2 from the set. I'm fairly new to Debian 3.1, and I've some questions, and general feedback about the installation process. NB: I had some trouble getting sound to work on my Soundblaster Vibra 128 sound card under kernel 2.4.27. When I switched to the alternative kernel 2.6.8 which is also on CD 1 of the set, sound now works (well, artsplay). For some reason the loaded module is es1371, not sb. NB: I've read that neither esd nor arts are being maintained. Q: If that's correct, is there something I should get instead? NB: XMMS freezes when it tries to play a song. Q: I just want to queue and play MP3s while I work. I read about alsaplayer, but couldn't find it on CD 1 or 2. Which, if any, CD is it on? Or is there something better? NB: CD disk 1 had almost all the software I use daily (great!) One exception is LaTeX (to make PDF doco). Q: Which, if any, CD is LaTeX on? Its dependencies? NB: I haven't installed my printer yet. OOo seems to only list Postscript printers (but I could be wrong). Q: Basically 'lpr' doesn't work, and being a total newbie on printing under Linux I'm just looking for info? (My printer directly connects to the PC, no network.) Which CDs have HP drivers? NB: I used the normal XFree86 installation, but it produced a default login screen with some weird resolution like 416 pixels by 380 pixels. I had to hack /etc/X11R6/XFree86Config-4 to get it to use my Cirrus card at 800x600. Yet still it scatters 'grey static' rectangles across the login screen just before the login window appears. Anyway, it works now apart from that static. Q: Is there some better way of getting X to detect my graphics card or tweak the settings apart from hacking the config file? NB: I was very impressed with the clear Gnome setup. It feels coherent. (Haven't tried KDE much yet.) Q: Is there a way to randomly in real-time change the background picture? I used to use xv -root under FVWM2, but this method can only initialise the picture used by Gnome, not change it while Gnome is running (Gnome seems to cache the picture data). NB: I have no ISP at home, and no DVD drive on the PC, so all installation must be done via CD. My general question is: how do I find modules on the CD set, if I want to burn-as-needed? Is there a CD directory listing somewhere on the net, or, better yet, a look-up form somewhere which will tell me if you want to install package BLAH, you need CD 5 and also CDs 1 and 2 for all the dependencies? (I worked out how to add CDs to the apt database after reading some man pages.) Overall I found the installer pleasantly helpful and most things just worked first time. slink archive?
Is slink archived anywhere? A year ago I installed slink on my venerable 486/8MB system and it worked like a charm. Now, slink is apparently gone from the net, so if I just want to install a few packages for my 2.0.38 kernal, how do I do it? I'm a big fan of the if it ain't broke don't fix it philosophy, and since my slink installation has been so stable over the past year, I just want to add a couple of packages to it without upgrading the kernel. If I download the potato versions of these packages, dpkg says wrong version, buddy. Surely slink still exists somewhere on the net??
Questions about Debian
To whom it may concern, I am considering using Debian on my computer, but I have a question, is Debian a GUI (Graphical User Interface)? I have installed and are using the 'basic' installation (from the 7 1.44 meg images), and it resembles an x-term or DOS environment, and I was wondering (before I download the rest) if the rest of the package has some GUI features.
