Re: BIG xwindow apps

My laptop is limited to 800x600, but I use X (4.1) all the time with no problems what so ever. I use Blackbox with a smallish theme and lots of workspaces - this combined with bbkeys makes it easy for me to quickly flip between workspaces. I also use AA fonts where possible as they are much more readable at smaller sizes, using this I can fit 4 80x25 xterms in a single workspace and them still be just about readable. I've also hacked my ~/.gtkrc 'theme' to use a smaller fonts so all my gtk and gnome apps fit much nicer. If an app does open too large, in blackbox ( and other wm's too I think ) holding down ALT and click dragging the oversized window allows you to drag it so you can reach the title bar buttons and resize it something more conservative. -- mallum
Mobile Networking Setup Ques
Aloha all; Is it possible for me to setup my laptop to 'know' what network its connected to and run scripts based on that ? For example, at work they use dhcp and at home my address is static. At work I manually 'pump' for an IP and at home I have to run ifup on the interface an d then manually edit resolve.conf ( which has been previously been set via dhcp at work ). Can somebody point me in the right direction for doing this ? Can it be done with somesort of broadcast ping ? Is there a package that will help with this sort of configuration ? Many thanks; -- mallum

galeon wont start, complains of gconf error
Hi all; I just apt-getted galeon (woody), but when I try and start it, I get the following error repeatedly ; ** WARNING **: GConf error: Failed to contact configuration server (a likely cause of this is that you have an existing configuration server (gconfd) running, but it isn't reachable from here - if you're logged in from two machines at once, you may need to enable TCP networking for ORBit) GConf Error: Failed to contact configuration server (a likely cause of this is that you have an existing configuration server (gconfd) running, but it isn't reachable from here - if you're logged in from two machines at once, you may need to enable TCP networking for ORBit) I've checked the galeon faq and also played with the galeon-config-tool but both to no success :( Can anybody help ? -- mallum

usbmgr just beeps in unstable
Has anyone had any luck with usbmgr ? When it starts up it just beeps twice and me and then exits. I cant seem to get any verbose/error info from it neither. It does however appear to load the relevant usb modules ( uhci, hid and mounsedev ) before exiting. I running unstable with a 2.4.10-ac4 kernel. Many thanks; -- mallum

Blank Screen With geforce2 and Nvidia Drivers
Hi all; Im running potato with Xfree 4.0.1 ( cybotha..? debs ) and a Hercules Prophet GeforceII MX card. I succesfully compiled the Nvidia 0.9-6 kernel module and installed the openGL drivers. Unfortunatly when I try and fire up X, the monitor changes resolution and then the screen just goes blank, and the keyboard locks up. However I can still ssh into the machine. The Xfree.0.log [ attached ] seems to show nothing thats obviously an error. I have tried numerous changes to XF86Config file advised by the faq and documentation found on the net, but still all I get is just a blank locked screen. Can anybody help ? If it helps I have a kt7-raid mother board with softbios III. The kernel is compiled with MTRR support ( though I havn't set this ? ) and no framebuffer support. Id really appreciate any help on this. Potato Blackbox Quickie
Aloha all; I run Blackbox wm on my box at work ( woody ) and my box at home ( potato ). In both there .blackboxrc's the focus model is set to 'clicktofocus'. Howevre my home box only focuses a window when I click its title bar, not when I click anywhere with in a window ( like my woody box at work ). Anyone know how I set up my potato blackbox to focus when I click anywhere on the window ( like woody blackbox ) and not just on the titlebar. I've searched the blackbox docs, but have had no joy. Is the woody blackbox a patched version to allow this behaviour ? Many thanks mallum
Help ! Dead Woody after upgrade
Hello all; Im running Woody on my desktop box at work. Yesterday I did an apt-get update, apt-get upgrade. It was a while since Id done that so quite alot of stuff got updated including the kernel. Everything seemed fine. Later on in the day I had to reboot and I was greeted by a continual; Lilo loading Linux . Lilo loading Linux . Lilo loading Linux . (over and over again with no Linux Loading) I tried the rescue option from the original potato install cd and it nearly came back up until the screen was filled with an error message complaining about loading kernel modules and not being able to write to the disk. Later on I managed to mount the hardrive via another rescue disk (via freshmeat) and tried to rerun lilo but it was confused about paths due to /dev/hda1 having to be mounted on /mnt. Im really lost here and would really appreciate some help. Fingers crossed; mallum

2.2.4pre9 and modules
Aloha All; To get support for my new ata100 drive , last night I installed the 2.2.4pre9 kernel ( using kernel-package ) . It all went fine (the drive worked) ... but then I noticed non of the modules Id selected seemed to be loading on boot. I checked /lib/modules/2.2.4pre9 and non of the modules Id selected during the kernel config were there. I tried again and again but alas no modules seemed to be getting compiled. I checked the docs for kernel-package and it said something about modules not being compiled when the kernel version has an epoch ? Am I doing something completely stupid here ? mallum
