Re: Problem installing mount in Sid amd64!

Hey again,

Problem "solved". One thing led to another, and i had to reinstall my
machine. Couldnt get it booted again, after my force-shutdown. Grub
was fscked...
Forcing it down after 200+ uptime is no good, And especially just not
have unstable but also has Experimental packages installed. DOH!

But thanks for your reply anyways :)

apt-get -u upgrade it got stuck when it was trying to install 'mount'

Preparing to replace mount 2.17.2-3.1 (using .../mount_2.17.2-3.2_amd64.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement mount ...

and nothing happens, even tried to kill the dpkg process.. nothing happens.

Okey, a short update.
The installer, still kick-ass, though, i wasnt able to make it install
lilo instead of grub. i skipped the "install grub" and choosed "install
lilo" instead, bud as i hit enter, i see the installer saying
"installing Grub" .. not lilo.
Weird.. (i know its still under development.. just wanted to let ya
know)

I have narrowed down the possibillities of things that could be the
cause of that file.
1st) I had a visitioir, simple as that. i was kindof unprotected, though
still it feels pretty stupit to leave a file that visible...
2nd) What i can think of, the only package i havent installed that was
on this box before is the mldonkey-server & mldoneky-gui packages, wich
i was using..

anyway, would appreciate some opinions. what could have caused this..
shall i post a bug report?

btw, sorry for the "anonymity" before, not used to this. ;)

2004-04-03 Thread smurfd
Hey there!

Ive recently installed Sarge/Testing. Everything went fine.
Love the new installer.. Smth.
Autodetected all my hardware on the laptop of mine :)

BUT, after some usage i found a file called /1 wich contained something
about /etc/emacs and /2
and i dont use emacs. Though in /etc/emacs there was some that could
have been installed by devhelp.

My question is, has anyone else had this /1 file? was i rooted? is it a
known bug?
Anyway i had to wipe my drive, so i cant paste the exact containment in
the /1 file.

can anyone shed some light to me?

mailinglists and mailclient usage?

2003-11-28 Thread smurfd
Hey debian-user@ !

(basic question)
I was wondering, if i handle the mailinglist threads, the correct way.

So, i find a thread and i select the message that i want to reply to..
(the thread was created by, lets say, [EMAIL PROTECTED] and the one
that wrote something i like to comment on was lets say,[EMAIL PROTECTED])

I press "Reply" in my mailclient (evolution btw) and i get the [EMAIL PROTECTED] in
the "To:" field. i change that to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Is that the way to do it?!

I belive someone had commented on my way of using the mailinglist a
while ago..

Just wanted to know!
Thanks in advance.

hmm debian.org..?

2003-11-21 Thread smurfd
Hmm well i might be totaly out of line here, but dont you think, that IF
it were a real threat, that someone over at Debian would have commented
it, and since the one claiming the server 'problem' would have had some
real proof?

Have a little faith in the debian folks!
I sure do!
What i dont trust, is some one claiming such things, and not having a
@debian.org mailadress :)

So what, its a new revision release coming up, they surely know that
there will be a lot for the servers to do. so they take them down, and
upgrade all packages. and perhaps throw in some tuning.. or something..

Relax, they will sure post a note about it soon enough, especially if
they notice all the Roumble it has created on this list ;)

Re: Where to announce?

2003-10-22 Thread smurfd
Hmm after reading most of the documentation, what it takes to become a
official Debian developer, i think i may start by posting a .tar file
somewhere First!

About the application in question :

---
name : apt-state
what it does : apt-state gives you the possibillity to 'save' or 'apply'
a "state" of packages installed. ie. lets say you have gone through the
process to finaly get all the packages you want installed, then you can
save a list of all the packages installed, to lateron be able to apply
the list of packages when you re-install your system.

And lets say you have a network of a number of machines, and want the
same "base" of packages installed on all of them, you would simply
'apply' the list you saved from the 1st machine.

So, it is perhaps not a extremly important program, but i think it is a
good-to-have program.
Hmm and ... it only looks at the name of the package, not the version or
date or .. so for this to work, you will have to manually check that
your sources.list file is the same, when you save, and when you apply.

And, PLEASE!! use with care, i dont want to be hold responsible if
anything should crash your system(not that i think it would)..

And yeah, i run it on a x86 machine..

Get a .tar.bz2 file here :
http://smurfd.netfirms.com/src/apt-state-0.1.tar.bz2

Try it, and tell me what you think, and what changes that You think
would be good..

Oh yeah, BTW, its still under development, so i have some additional
output that will be removed later.

Best regards

'Cus if i put the software here(debian-user@), people would indeed test

apt-get install pkg and remove pkg on the same line?!

2003-10-19 Thread smurfd
Hey there Debian-user list, ive been thinking, (not well enough, as it
seems).

How does dselect do, when you select/deselect packages to be
added/removed ? i mean, can you type yourself, like on one line..

apt-get install packages remove packages?

Im not meaning
apt-get install packages; apt-get remove packages

you see, so it would collect all packages in need to be added, and all
packages that needs to be removed..

Or so i Thougt. but now i get (not as much as i did earlier) messages
looking like this in the header :

(all mails dont have these particular adresses, they come from different

Why? i havent done anything to my imap/smtp settings..

The host in this case is AOL, so its very real.. And since its such a
large host/isp its not sertain, wether or not its spamm mail adresses or
realones.
These 'someones' is not anyone that i have ever recived/mailed from/to
before.

Yeah, if i do tail -f /var/log/exim/mainlog it never stops scrolling
down..

Thanks, ill try clearing my queue list. But since i did a fresh install
(what i ment with that, is that i did re-format all my partitions and
installed a fresh new system on them, since i got "paranoied" and
thought for a secound that my system was compromized.) it should have
been cleared, the queue list.

Well i guess i have to get buissy then, reading more on smtp & exim.

Is 'host' a valid host? (why hide it from us anyways?) What about
the 'someone'? Are these contacts of yours or do they look like
something from a spam run or DDoS attack? It's quite possible that
the admin(s) of 'host' have blocked your machine at their firewall
once they noticed the "attack". (or mabye that host just doesn't
exist)

I don't know what you mean by "fresh install".

Read up on SMTP and exim and how to secure your mail server. The
problem could be insufficient/incorrect relay controls in your exim
config or you might be running some other security hole (such as
formmail.pl) that provides unauthorized use of your mail
infrastructure.

| Has anyone stumbled into similar situations, and is there a way to get
| rid of those "probes"?

Those aren't "probes" ... exim has messages on the queue and it is
dutifully trying to deliver them like it was told to. What you need
to do now is clean out your mailq and close the hole that allowed your
system to be abused.

As for cleaning out the queue :
. 'mailq' will report on the messages in the queue
. 'exim -Mrm ' will remove the message with id ''
You can either remove them one at a time, manually, or combine some
unix utils (eg grep or sed or awk) to automate the process of
extracting all message ids of messages addressed to that host and then
instructing exim to drop it.

problem regarding kernel 2.4.18 and grsecurity 1.9.4 (in woody)

Hey folks, im not sure if this is a bug or if im doing something wrong.

Ive been having problems compiling the 2.4.18 kernel with the grsecurity
1.9.4 patch applied. Seems that it had something to do with the ACL
option that grsecurity offers.

Has someone had the same problem, and is there any solutions..
(oh yeah, its on a old pentium 100, but that cant be any problem...)
here is the end of my kernel compiling
