xmcd problems
It appears that xmcd is not completely setting itself up. When I try to run progs that want to use the cddb part of it, they complain that XMCD_LIBDIR is not setup. What should this variable be set to? TIA, Chris
Help with /etc/printcap
I'm having problems getting my remote printing to work when I use true type fonts. When i was on the #debian irc channel, someone suggested that I process the print job to raw printer data, and then send it to the printer. However, I have no idea how to do this. Could someone please help me setup the proper printcap file to do this? TIA, chris P.S. Here is my current /etc/printcap which is working fone for all other things: lp|hpdj672c|HP Deskjet 672C:\ :lp=/dev/null:sd=/var/spool/lpd/hpdj672c:\ :rm=192.168.1.1:\ :rp=hpdj672c:\ :sh:

xfstt printing
I'm having printing problems relating to my use of xfstt (true type server). My printer is attached to a little 486 machine which is being used as a dialup/print server. I don't have X installed, and don't have the room or power for it on that machine. Anyway, is there a way to make it see xfstt when printing? I just tried to print from netscape (which is using some true type fonts), and was given Error: /invalid font in findfont. Further in the error message it states that it can't find times new roman. Any help on how to fix this would be appreciated. TIA, chris

Remote Printing Problems
I'm having problems with my remote printing and am looking for some more help. I have got it setup where I can print xemacs, tkrat, command line, etc. However, if I try to print from Netscape or Star Office, nothing ever prints. I've checked logs on my little print server, and don't see anything special. On my main machine that I use, I do have xsftt running. That is the only thing I can figure out might be the problem. If it is, how can I get it running for X on a remote machine? Any other ideas would be appreciated. TIA, chris P.S. The remote machine is a Cyrix 486Dx4 100 with 24 megs and ~400megs hd. It is slow enough as it is, so I don't want to overly burden it down if possible. It's already the print server (except as noted), and dial out server/firewall/ipmasq machine.
Installing mysql
Can someone tell me which packages I need to get mysql installed? I looked up the packages, and it listed about 7 mysql packages. However, when I tried to install all of them with apt, I was told that some of the packages conflict, so I'm not sure which ones I need. TIA, chris

Printing Problems Con't
First off, let me say thanks to those of you who helped me get remote printing to work. Now, I am still having a small problem with the remote printing. Nothing will print from netscape. I can print using the lp command, and with most programs (xemacs, tkrat, etc). Any idea what might be going on? TIA, Chris
NT causes continual dialup.
I've just added an NT 4.0 server machine onto my linux network so I can work on learning it. Anyway, since I've added it, my dial up connection has been going on continually. It appears to be dns look ups since it is connecting on port 53. Does anyone know how to stop this in NT? Sorry for being off topic.

It is happily counting down the seconds from this time, till a while later when it gives the new estimate: 7h37m46s This new estimate happily counts down the seconds for a while, then it switches back to the old estimate. One is a lower estimate, the other an upper estimate, and the display deliberately oscillates between the two. 2. This behaviour is a strange quirk of the method used to estimate time till completion. Which one is it? Or is there a third explanation? APT - Uninstall Leftovers
I'm having problems with apt and it's removal of packages. I tried to install xrn (the x news reader) and it installed cnews and inews removing my leafnode. I then had it reinstall leafnode, since it was properly configured and working. Of course this removed what I had just installed. Anyway, I'm getting tons of mail saying the /usr/lib/news/sendbatches, /usr/lib/news/input/newsrun, and /usr/lib/news/maint/newswatch do not exist. They appear to be in a cron job, but I can't find them. Any idea where they might be at? Also, should'nt this have been removed by the removal of the packages? TIA, Chris

I have the Windows networking configured to use 192.168.0.1 as a gateway. These two computers are networked fine internally right now but with no outside access for the Windows machine (i.e. ftp, telnet, Exceed, all working.) I'd appreciate any help. Also, I was wondering if anyone has a more in-depth place to get info about ipchains (other than the man page.) Install the ipmasq package. It's default config should work out of the box for this setup. It also is self aware of which kernel and will call ipchains or ipfwadm as needed. Dont forget to build a kernel with CONFIG_FIREWALL, CONFIG_IP_FIREWALL, CONFIG_IP_FORWARD, and CONFIG_IP_MASQUERADE If you want to use IPChains, read the HOWTO. Towards the end, there is a section that converts ipfwadm commands to ipchains. The masq stuff is given there. That is how I found it. chris

System lock ups
I'm having a rather strange problem with my system and was wondering if anyone has an idea on what might be going on. Every so often, the load on the system will go balistic, and basically lock the system up. If I have top running during this time, it will show loads 3; however, there is never a program running with more than a few % of the processor. During this time, there is nothing I can do, other than switch consoles. I can type in one command per console/xterm, but then it will just sit. Eventually the system will come back, and be normal. Does anyone have an idea on what is happening? Also, is there a way to get a running log of the load and processor hogging programs (kind of like top - syslog type thing)? Thanks, Chris

ipchains/ip_masq problems
I can't seem to get my ip_masq working. I'm running 2.1.131, so I'm using ipchains. I've set it up the best I can tell from the instructions, but can't hit anything outside my lan from my win95 box. Any ideas on what I have not done properly? Here is what I'm sending ipchains from my /etc/init.d/network file: ipchains -P forward DENY ipchains -A forward -j MASQ -s 192.168.1.0/24 -d 0.0.0.0/0 I have a ppp account that I use to connect to the internet from. Network Setup Problems
I am having some problems getting my lan working. I'm trying to connect my win95 machine to my linux machine. Both have 3c509's connected to a hub. I've given my linux box 192.168.1.1 and windows 192.168.1.2. However, I can not ping either machine from the other. Any ideas? BTW, here is a basic diagram. PPP 192.168.1.1 - eth0 192.168.1.2 Internet ---Linux --- win95 Thanks, Chris
Re: ctx monitors
I have the CTX VL700 (17) montitor, and have been very happy with it. Nice on screen controls, and very nice look and feel. ipmasq problems
Ok, I've gotten my network up, but I can't seem to get ipmasq to work. I've followed the mini-howto and added the appropriate lines to my /etc/init.d/network file. However, everytime it tries to run ipfwadm it croaks. Here are the commands, and the errors: ipfwadm -F -p deny ipfwadm: setsockopt failed: Invalid argument ipfwadm -F -a m -S 192.168.1.0/24 -D 0.0.0.0/0 ipfwadm: setsockopt failed: No such file or directory I'm running 2.1.131 on a mixed hamm/slink/potatoe system. TIA, Chris
diald documents
Where can I find some documentation that is specific to the Debian way or running diald? I've been reading the docs in the /usr/doc/diald directory, but they don't seem to touch on how the .deb file setup the stuff in the /etc/ dirs. Thanks, Chris
Re: Name suggestion

I just upgraded to broken and now my system is broken...oh, nevermind. Once broken is no longer broken and will actually work, it should then go to frozen ... where it should actually be frozen. If it becomes broken again after being frozen it should be moved back to broken. It would really be nice if frozen really ment frozen too. In other words, once a candidate moves out of unstable, once it is no longer called unstable ... people do not expect it be unstable. At least if it is moved from unstable to broken, there will be no surprises. Either than or call it unstable-frozen rather than frozen. Broken is more accurate and shorter though. Slow mail delivery
I'm reposting this message since I've never seen my original come through: I'm having problems with mail delivery on my local box. When I d/l my mail from my isp (using fetchmail), it is taking over 5 minutes (probably closer to 10) for the mail to get delivered, i.e. for the machine to say I have new mail, not for it to come down from my isp. Any ideas on what could be causing this, and how to fix it? Thanks, Chris

Printer not printing
I need some help getting my printer (an HP dj672c) to start printing. I have set it up using the magicfilter program, and told it to use the hp550c filter. When I try to print something, I'm given the print job id, but no print out. The /etc/printcap seems be be ok. I'm running 2.1.128 with pc style hardware, and parallel printer support compiled into the kernel. Any ideas on what is/might be wrong? TIA, wax_man
