ATI 3D Rage IIC AGP & Video Memory

2002-09-21 Thread Egor Tur

Hi.
I have ATI RAGE IIc video.
In my XFree86.log I found

due to linear aperture size and/or placement of hardware cursor image area
(II) ATI(0): Using block 0 MMIO aperture at 0xE5000400

(II) ATI(0): MMIO write caching enabled
(--) ATI(0): 2048 kB of Pseudo-EDO DRAM detected (using 2047 kB)
(WW) ATI(0): Cannot shadow an accelerated frame buffer

Is it means that I have 2MB (or only use) video memory?

$ lspci -v

VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc 3D Rage IIC AGP (rev 7a)
(prog-if 00 [VGA])
Subsystem: ATI Technologies Inc: Unknown device 0088
Flags: bus master, stepping, medium devsel, latency 64, IRQ 11
Memory at e600 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=16M]

Memory at e500 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=4K]
Expansion ROM at [disabled] [size=128K]
Capabilities:

$ cat /proc/mtrr

reg00: base=0x (0MB), size= 64MB: write-back, count=1

How can I set my video memory correctly ?
Thanx.

I had the same sort of problems you did... actually, I'm not sure I ever
even got X to come up properly using the i810 driver with XFree 3.3.6
and kernel 2.2.x. I wanted to run newer software anyway, so I
dist-upgraded to Sid (kernel 2.4 and XFree 4 weren't in Woody yet at
that point) and I've been much happier since then.

i810 AGP Video Card LockUps w/XFree86!

2001-07-27 Thread Ryan Kirkpatrick

I am attempting to get potato to run on a machine with an onboard
i810 (Intel) video card. I installed potato onto a blank system, installed
the SVGA X server, and installed the necessary agpgart.o module. Before
testing the X server, I compiled a new 2.2.19 kernel and then compiled the
agpgart.o module against that. I got the source for that module from the X
Strike Force web page (Debian XFree86 info page).
I configured the XF86Config file as instructed and fired up
Xwindows. At first everything appeared to work fine. I was able to run at
1152x864 at 24 bit color w/o a problem and the picture looked just fine. I
was able to run a gnome desktop and applications without any
problems. That is until about 5-10 minutes passed, when the entire system
locked up (not just the console, it fell of the network as well). I tried
a few more times, but whether I was in X or not, 5-10 minutes after
starting X for the first time, the system would lock up. If I was at the
console when it happened, there were no kernel messages.
I then did some research and found that Intel had their own
version of the SVGA X server for this card. I downloaded it, and installed
it in place of Debian's SVGA X server. Once again started up X, once again
it appeared to work fine, and once again it would crash within 5-10
minutes.
At this point, my only options appears to be to try a 2.4 kernel
and XFree86 4.0, but I am not too hopeful. Is there any one else out there
who have gotten the i810 AGP video card to work with potato, and if so,
how did you do it? Thanks in advance for any and all help!

Hi,

I am planning on upgrading my home system, starting with the
motherboard/cpu. How well do motherboards with video on the motherboard
work with linux (specifically debian). In particular, I've been
considering the Eurone EM-5598 motherboard. This has AGP video on the
motherboard (embedded SIS 6326). Will I be able to use XFree86 with
this (I'm not sure how well XFree86 works with AGP yet). I'll be running
kernel 2.0.36 on this box for a while still - I work on the AROS project
(http//www.aros.org), and this doesn't work with 2.2 kernels yet.

If this combo will not work, I'm open to alternate suggestions
for a motherboard/video combo with good price/performance, or pointers to
further information.

AGP video on motherboard?

Hi,

I am planning on upgrading my home system, starting with the

work with linux (specifically debian). In particular, I've been

AGP is a variation on the PCI bus specially for video cards. If you
want to know if a video card is supported, you have to check out the
XFree86 compatibility. Usually if a certain card or chip set is
supported, the AGP version is supported, so you can use it in X. If you
are in doubt about a certain card, just ask around on the various
mailing lists and news groups. If you want to use a card right now, it
is usually a bad idea to pick one that is only going to be supported
`real soon now'.

Another matter is support of the specific feature that AGP was meant
for: storing textures in main memory and sending them to the video card
at high transfer rates. I don't know if there is any support for that.

Yes, it is, by a new server from S.u.S.e. Go to www.suse.com and have

The cards based on the nVidia 128 work fine and dandy (Diamond Viper,
STB Velocity, et al) in AGP using the standard XFree86_SVGA server.

SuSE recently released a server for the G200. This will probably make it
into the next release of XFree86, but for now it is "beta". My previous
experience with using SuSE servers with Debian (the then new nVidia server)
was favorable. But unless you are pretty good at setting up X, I suggest
you stick with with the official XFree86 servers, all of which, I think,
are available in hamm.

An excellent source of Linux oriented hardware data (including video cards)
is Net Express's web site: http://www.tdl.com/~netex/

How could they tell you that??? The X provided in /usr/X11R6/bin is
a script which checks for some security issues (are you allowed to run
the X server? e.g.) and finally calls the Server mentioned in
/etc/X11/Xserver. The Debian Way(tm) is leave /usr/X11R6/bin alone and
edit /etx/X11/Xserver.

I really don't think that is a good idea. Debian created that "X" as an
suid wrapper for X servers so that the server wouldn't have to be suid.
I have the same card (Fire GL 1000 Pro) and am using the server the
"standard" Debian way. Instead of deleting Debian's "X," I would leave
that X there and modify /etc/X11/Xserver to make Debian use the new X
server (XFCom_3DLabs). You will also probably need to use SuSE's
xf86config program. The last time I checked there was no new XF86Setup
program that would work with this server, and the current stable XF86Setup
program doesn't seem to work with this server (at least for me). When you
run SuSE's xf86config, you should probably answer "no" to the question of
whether you should install a symbolic called "X" to XFCom_3DLabs since
this functionality is handled by Debian's "X" and the /etc/X11/Xserver
file.

As some one else on this list sayed, this X server is not very stable
yet. I have had some problems with it. Again, I really don't think you
should erase Debian's "X." If you do erase it, you may have problems
later on when the Permedia2 X server becomes stable and becomes part of
the XFree86 distribution meaning that it will eventually become a Debian
package. When this happens, the lack of Debian's "X" will probably mean
that future installations of XFree86 will not install properly.

xbase-configure checks if there is a XF86Config file and refuses to run if it
exists. One has to rename or delete /etc/X11/XF86Config before rerunning
xbase-configure.

But you don't use xbase-configure for your card because...

I too have that exact video card. It's a great card but it does require a
special X server. You need S.u.S.E's Elsa_GLoria server. You can acquire
this at http://www.suse.com/. Just follow the links to their X page and to
their Elsa_GLoria card. Installation instructions are also given on the
page. One thing they don't tell you though that you have to do under
Debian is delete the 'X' bin that should be in /usr/X11R6/bin and then
just link the Elsa_GLoria bin (XSuSE_Elsa_GLoria I believe) to 'X'. If you
have any other problems after doing this feel free to mail me.

What AGP cards are being used successfully with X? Specifically, I'm
considering the Matrox Millenium II AGP.

The XSuse Millenium driver from http://www.suse.de is reputed to work
with AGP.
