Thanks for the edu.

Yup. Dont forget that the 56k afterburner will only affect downloads;
upstream remains at 36.6 no matter what.

The whole problem is Sprint. Sprint stinks where ever they have no
one to compete with. Take for example service in Tallahassee. They
are the only provider. You may need a whole day to get to talk to
 someone.

DSL problem (possibly OT)

2004-02-26 Thread Jeff Elkins
I'm steamed...

I've been running Sprint's DSL for over three years, for the most part w/o
trouble. I use a debian server with NAT and iptable firewall to connect.
Typical downstream speeds averaged 130 - 150 KB/s.

About three weeks ago I noticed when performing apt-get updates and installs,
that my download speeds dropped to 30 KB/s and below. I blew it off as a
temporary network issue but the problem is not going away.

I used ncftp to log into speedtest-fl.sprint-hsd.net and downloaded some test
files that show I'm getting normal 150 KB/s download speeds. However,
anywhere else speeds drop to the crappy 30 or so KB/s.

Sprint level one support basically tells me to screw off, that the problem is
on my end or that every other friggin server on the Internet is at fault,
since I can download at full speed from their ftp server.

Plus of course, there's the Linux issue.

Could there be something with my setup that has suddenly gone haywire? What
tests can I perform? The server is debian sid and hasn't been fooled with in
ages.

Maybe have a look at the mss setting?

Thanks, Ken.

I now know that this is not a debian or linux problem. I booted Win98SE and
conducted "official" Sprint speed tests...

Running tests:
Please wait...

-- Starting download test... Done!
-- Starting upload test... Done!

Testing complete! Your results are:

- Download speed: 201.000 KBits/sec ( 4 times faster than a 56k modem )
- Upload speed: 227.000 KBits/sec ( 7 times faster than a 56k modem )

I now have to fight my way through crap tech support.

Jeff

7x ?

I've deal with too many "tech support ops" lately. /. had an article
link about tech support ops. It was enlightening. The mantra is
"we don't support that". They get paid per call. They have nothing
to do with the product or service you bought.

My laptop blew a main board. Tech support told me it was my ISP or
that I was too stupid to use a computer. When I took it in to a service
center, they replaced the main board twice and got it working.

Enough venting about so called customer service. Maybe the servers are
congested? When I download .iso with wget, I shop around for a lightly
loaded server. Maybe this technique will help you isolated your
problem. Using the ISP test server is no test of course. Instead,
try to wget and iso from several mirrors. Maybe you can coordinate with
a friend to wget from the same server at the same time. Then compare
notes.

On a final note, my DSL service sucked. Broadband on cable is _much_
better. YMMV.

Yeah, MMDV. It's all the providers, and what they provide. Here, I
my DSL, and you couldn't pay me to switch to cable. But OTOH,
I have friends in NYC where cable is a much better option.

Speakeasy is the best for ISP, or so I've been told.

I'm here in Mountain View, CA, heart of Silicon Valley, in a 30-year old
apartment building with absestos, lead paint, (but great neighbors), and
ROUND phone jacks. I'm like 300 FEET from the C.O.

When he was setting it up, the installer was salivating: he said you are
SO going to love this service, you are so close, it's going to rock.
Apparently the quality of the wiring in my building is so shitty that it
went from most-best-quality-it's-going-to-be-perfect to
it-barely-even-worked-at-250k-second.

Cable is much better, even at $55/mo it's expensive but it's better.
They upped it to 3.0 MB/sec down and I get it at 4am when I'm up anyway.

But if you are in a good place with good wiring get speakeasy. From
what I hear they let you run whatever kinds of servers you want.
