Certainly there are 100 ways to filter Debian messages into a separate
spool or folder.

The original poster wanted a newsgroup, I assume, so that he/she could
read a high-volume list as if it were USENET instead of email: that is,
so threading was managed properly, so articles were kept around for some
amount of time then expired, etc.

My point was that if you read the mailing list using Gnus, then for all
practical purposes is _will_ look like a newsgroup: threading,
auto-expiry, etc.

Obviously this won't help with the bandwidth situation, but...

You don't need Gnus for this (btw I use Gnus too ;-)), but IMHO more
comfortable to do this w/ formail:

, .procmailrc
| :0
| * X-Loop: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
| |formail +1 -ds cat >>Mail/spool/deb.user.spool
`

With this Gnus (or any other MUA) gets "pre-splitted" messages...

Try setting up a mail2news gateway. Install inn|inn2, create a local
newsgroup, make it moderated, set the mailing list address as the
moderator address and feed incoming articles into the group with
mailpost.

Just make damn sure you do it right, or you will piss off a lot of
people.

this is true, usually (occasionally there are some 'rtfm' replies,
but most are quite informative).

but it's a two-edged sword -- this list is popular because it's
helpful... but it's so popular that you hafta weed thru 150 posts
to find the one that you can answer (or to find the one that
answered you)...

damn tradeoffs. who designed this universe, anyway?

This list is *EXTREMELY* helpful for any problem a debian user may
have. I personally have never *not* gotten a solution to my problems
posted here, and the solution is usually posted just a few minutes/hours
after I send my help message.

As an aside, I think the sheer volume of people subscribed to this list
helps with the rapid replies. I was subscribed to the Slackware list (I
use Slackware at work) and answers took days to get with nowhere near
the quality of answers.

Just use Gnus. You can filter debian-user mail into a separate
spool file and have Gnus read it, and it'll look and behave exactly like
a newsgroup.

Works great.

Yeah, I'd agree with you to a certain point. If you
use http mail servers like hotmail, excite etc the
traffic would definitely be an impediment. Some of
the servers do not appreciate mailing lists

On the other side, the debian list is one of the
most bubbly and helpful lists that I have seen. Can
you believe I posted a query on 04 Sep 2k (Mon) in
the morning, and somebody replied my mail on 03 Sep

In case the volume of mail is what is bothering you
there is already a news group for debian. Somebody
has replied already .

Actually, I somewhat prefer mailing lists. 'muc.*' is a mail-usenet
crosspost mechanism. The group exists if you care to follow it.

Debian News Group Needed

2000-09-04 Thread Previ
Hi all,
I seriously believe that this and other debian lists are far better
managed both by users and debian, using NewsGroups
rather than mail lists.

Needless to say the resulting heavy traffic will make the
GPLed newsgroup software(s?) the most matured one.

Hoping to news://news.debian.org/ soon.

Previ
