And this is no expections. So far I had to edit some file, and fix a few things to get it running, but I am using the xserver-xorg-video-nv drivers and most of the requires packages from Xorg 7.0. So if you want to have to debug some things and enjoy a challange getting it to work, have fun and test them out! I did. What's the correct sources.list entry? I have deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian experimental main non-free contrib and I find this: $ apt-cache policy xorg xorg: Installed: (none) Candidate: 1:7.0.4 Version table: 1:7.0.4 0 50 http://ftp.debian.org experimental/main Packages So I guess the name of the new metapackage to install is xorg. Unfortunately I have not yet had the time to play with it. Hi, Mine says: deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ ../project/experimental main contrib non-free When I first started to try to get xorg 7.0 a few weeks ago, the xorg-x-window-system-x-window-system-core dependency list was missing a few things here and there, so tried to get what I could and waited for each update to see what was added. Now with IIRC 7.0.3 or 7.0.4, the xorg packages seem nearly complete. There were a few things like: new locations for font files, missing font pacakges, missing gl or mesa dependencies and other as of yet unknown changes/transitions that may need to be completed or fixed but as of 7.0.4, it seems very close to becoming an 'unstable' packages. OK, I bit the bullet and installed x.org 7.0.4. After fixing the font directory problem, X starts, but the system has forgotten the systemwide DE. Now, when I run startx, it only brings up a small fixed-size xterm window. I'm able to start GNOME by typing this in that xterm window: metacity gnome-session So, how do I tell the system what the systemwide DE should be? There must be a Debian Way to do it, but I can't find it.
