Potato y epson stylus 400

If someone starts writing 'a beginner's guide using debian', there should be an explanation how to configure a printer... In the docs it was even quite difficult to find out that you have to run magicfilterconfig, before magicfilter starts working (dselect-process didn't start any configuration process for it.) This 'configuring a printer' could be included even in the installation process as it is generally included in the other distros, which I've seen (rh, suse)? In hamm I found the best doc in 'customizing LyX' and wrote my filters using that explanation. Didn't use magicfilter at all. (By the way: LyX is is a very good program to make nice texts.)

I think you may need to read the sections on stylus and uniprint in /usr/doc/gs-aladdin/Devices.htm and then fine tune your filter. I had to do this for both a bog-standard epson 9pin to get quality output, and for the HP 895 colour inkjet to prevent drowning (but not increasing the resolution). Magicfilter and printing (Epson stylus 400)
1) Earlier while still using 'hamm' I wrote my ps.filter by using the documentation provided by Lyx customization doc. I used an old matrix printer to print ps- and text-files. It worked quite well. 2) When switching to slink I purchased a cheap Epson Stylus color 400 and installed 'magicfilter'. As being new to 'magicfilter' it took some time to find out that I have to run 'magicfilterconfig' to get it working at all. Now I managed to get the printer printing text-files perfectly just by selecting the right device while configuring. What about printing ps-files and other kind of files? Should I write myself ps-filter or how is done with 'magicfilter'? (The man page isn't very clear and in the docs there is almost nothing about it.) -hv

Aside from that, it works fine with both PostScript and plain text. I do not know whether the recent Ghostscript .debs have the stcolor component compiled in or not. I use the epson9high, epson and escp2 device; but it doesn't work. Thanks P.S : sorry with my bad english, but I'm french. You need at least Ghostscript 3.something (3.53, I think). I recommend either 4.03 or 5.03 (I've not tested the latter thoroughly, but it seems more reliable than 5.00 and 5.01 were). With the 5.0x releases, you've got a choice of the uniprint and stcolor drivers, though the stcolor driver is *NOT* included in the RPM-installable binaries I've seen. :-( I've mostly used stcolor. The key points, once you've got the correct version of Ghostscript installed with the correct drivers, are: - Use the stcolor or uniprint driver. I'll assume stcolor, since that's what I use and I'm more familiar with it. The following may not apply directly with uniprint. - You *MUST* use the -dSoftWeave option to print at above 360x360 dpi, or you'll get endless form feeds rather than printouts. - When printing color, you'll almost certainly want to include the stcolor.ps file (e.g., 'ghostscript {various options} stcolor.ps myfile.ps'). This is included with the standard distribution, and sets up Ghostscript's color mapping functions. Without it, you'll get very dark and over-saturated colors, and the printer will guzzle ink cartridges. - For best results with color, experiment with the dithering options. In my experience, fscmyk and hscmyk are about equally good, overall, and the others aren't as good on most files, though fsrgb is pretty good on some files. - To get more than really basic functionality, you'll pretty well need to read the documentation. The stcolor driver is well documented, though if you're new to color inkjet printing with Ghostscript, it may take a couple of read-throughs to get more than a basic understanding of the topic. -- Rod Smith Author of: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Should I Buy OS/2 FAQ http://www.users.fast.net/~rodsmith OS/2 Soundcard Summary NOTE: Remove the capitalized word from my address to mail me -- I got a 400 for Christmas and will be trying soon on Linux... -- Peter Galbraith, research scientist [EMAIL PROTECTED] Maurice-Lamontagne Institute, Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada P.O. Any suggestions, help or direction would be appreciated. Sorry, you are out of luck. As far as I know, the EPSON Stylus COLOR 400 is a Windows-only printer. Part of the printer code (ESC/P2, I guess) is in the software instead of in the printer hardware. Unless EPSON provides those source codes (highly unlikely) and someone bothers to write a Linux driver for it, this printer won't do much good for you. If it is not too late, return the SC400 and exchange for a SC600 or SC800. GhostScript 4.03 and especially 5.x support SC500, SC600, SC800, etc. Hope this helps.
