faxing

2006-07-26 Thread Mark Copper
Sorry if this is OT, but faxing has given me fits for years.

I want to receive a fax, via modem on my Debian PC,
edit it in GIMP and fax it back. Here's what I
think works:

   - use mgetty to receive fax
   - open fax in GIMP (GIMP can read but not write .g3 files)
   - scale image to double vertical dimension for normal (204x98 dpi)
 faxes
   - edit image and save in, say, GIMP's xcf format
   - scale image to halve vertical dimension
   - using ImageMagick "convert" to .g3 format (ImageMagick can read but
 not write GIMP's xcf format
   - use mgetty's "sendfax" to send fax

Is there a better way? Whenever I google for help I never seem to be
able to find anything but the ImageMagick manual pages which have not
helped me (for years :( ).

Thanks.

Mark

Agreed. Fax was a poor and ill-considered approach to what email now does
better. Unfortunately some people still provide no other useful contact

On this, I would say that digital signatures are far superior, and should

As long as you have broadband interent access you can use web based
faxing solutions, some even provide free faxing services.

http://www.savetz.com/fax/

I do think that e-mail would be a better solution, how many people you
know have a fax machine, but no e-mail? Also you have the problem of
confirmation, yes you can get a little confirmation when you send the
fax, does it go to the right person? Or does it sit on the machine
until someone feels like looking at it? Is what you send readable on
their end, is it complete? I think we can all remember those days of
looking for page 3, the most critical part of the fax and ending up
calling the person to resend it.

In a simple term faxes are not realiable, too many variables for
failure compared to e-mail, and then you have the security aspect to
contend with. The only exception I can think of would be signatures,
I have run into some places which want a signature faxed to them for
some dumb reason, its not like digital signatures are good enough or
something. If that happens, a good scanner and the above site
provides me with ample resources to please their little hearts.

If someone owns a fax machine, and a computer do us all a favor and
unplug it, trust me you will be glad you did. For the cost of ink,
and paper just sign up for a fax-e-mail solution. Thats right
business offer a solution for all those faxes to be digital 1-and 0's
sent to your favorite e-mail address.

Well, broadband itself, like a modem, is not really about sending images: it's
a low-level communication system, for sending and receiving data of some
kind. In the case of modems and fax machines, the technology is very
similar: they take data and encode it as audio, then send it over a
phoneline, and finally decode it again. A fax basically *is* a modem with
built-in image scanning/conversion/printing.

On the other hand, a broadband "modem" is something quite different: it sends
and receives data in an entirely different way, that has nothing to do with
the way faxes send and receive data.

Where the confusion lies is that both technologies are used as underlying
communication methods for Internet communications, but when you send an image
over the internet, you're not sending it in a way that's similar to fax. In
fact, it's VERY different. Rather than calling someone, and sending a
digital image, you're connecting to the internet, finding another computer on
that network, and digitally sending data through some high-level protocol.
What you send could be an image, a sound, or a CD: it's all the same as far
as the internet is concerned, but a fax machine wouldn't understand any of
it, image or not.

thought that it is possible since broadband can handle images. I came

Broadband doesn't do fax. At least, not in the way you're probably
expecting if you've used a fax modem before. It just so happens that
fax machines and modems share a few underlying similarities, so they
make fax modems that do both. That lucky coincidence doesn't apply
with broadband, though, which is much newer technology than faxes.

You can use a email-to-fax gateway for this, and I think some are
available as Free Software, but I'm not sure if Debian has any in
official packages.

You could setup a printer in these applications that calls the KDE Printing
subsystem, which would give you access to all the printers configured there
(including your fax printers). The full command line to setup as the
printer is :

Faxing from Debian

2004-06-20 Thread David Baron
I have gotten this to work using a couple of efax front-ends, efax-gtk and
kdeprintfax. Kdeprintfax can be set up called as a printer choice from kde
applications. However, direct applications such as OpenOffice and others will
only see the regular printers attached to the system, for example, on a
parallel port using a known driver such as for Epson or HP.

What is needed is a front end such as one of the above which will come up when
selecting a fax printer listed under CUPS. An interface might be using a URI.
How might I set this up?

Suggestions for faxing under Debian?

2002-12-16 Thread Karsten M. Self
I'm looking for a simple fax solution for a laptop. I've settled on
efax, though it's not all I'd hoped for.

hylafax, while suitable for a dedicated fax server, seems to have
numerous problems when used in a send-only, periodic, mode. See bug
#173024 for details.

While efax does indeed send faxes, there are a few things I'd be
interested in seeing:

  - Preconfigured fax recipeitns. The equivalent of an email alias or
such.

  - The ability to queue up a list of faxes to send (and resend/retry if
necessary) at a later point in time. Since this system uses the
modem as its primary networking interface, I can't be online and
send faxes at the same time. efax doesn't appear to support this.
Ideally, I'd submit a set of requests, to be executed at some later
time when the modem is free. This probably fits hylafax better than
efax. Or I could gin up a front-end to submit faxes when the
modem's free Hmm.

  - Set up faxing as a printer service. There's a howto on the topic,
but I haven't managed to get it working with my system yet.
Currently using lpr for printing, but I'm considering switching to
CUPS.

If anyone's got stories/configs for fax setups to share, I'm interested.

Peace.

DTP-type word processor. Lyx is indeed great for text production, but it
is somewhat inflexible about layout etc. and can be changed only with a

No, I need to fax from Applix in particular. I am sure it is possible to
add a section to /etc/mailcap which will invoke a filter to pipe the
output to efax, but I am not sure what it is. The necessity to interrupt
the process to add a 'phone number might be a problem.

Anyway, what I would like to do is to be able to print directly from an

Check the "efax" package. It's the easiest fax system I've seen so far
(Linux or otherwise).

Ok - you can use mgetty, but I've found it easier to use efax (also a
debian package) - also, efax supports older fax modems (class 1) than
mgetty does (mgetty requires class 2 or higher).

Also, what your wife needs to fax needs to be in either postscript,
plain text, or an image file. Most programs that are able to print
documents can produce postscript output.

If you're going to fax postscript files, you also need the 'gs' and
'gs-fonts' packages. (I think that the 'gs-aladin' package instead of
'gs' will also work, but I don't use it)

Here's what I did:

I installed efax, and then edited the /etc/efax.rc file and replaced
the obvious things that needed replacing (there are bits that say
things like "---Your name here---" - it's pretty obvious what needs to
be replaced). Since my modem is an old class 1 fax modem, I had to
add a line to /etc/efax.rc file saying:
CLASS=1

You can test whether your modem is a class 1 or class 2 (or even class
2.0) fax modem by doing the following in minicom:
AT+FCLASS=0
AT+FCLASS=1
AT+FCLASS=2
AT+FCLASS=2.0

Some of these commands will return OK, some will return ERROR - the
last command that says "OK" indicates the class of your modem. On my
machine, AT+FCLASS=0 and AT+FCLASS=1 both return OK, but the other
commands return ERROR. You only need to add a 'CLASS=' line to
/etc/efax.rc if you have a class 1 modem.

Once you've done this, and set up your /etc/efax.rc appropriately, you
can fax things with:
 fax send 555-1212 file.ps

(of course, you would presumably use a different phone number and
filename)

More details on other fax commands (receiving, etc.) can be found in
the 'fax' manpage.

One word of caution - faxing postscript creates a load of temporary
files in the current directory, one for each page - file.ps.001,
file.ps.002, etc. so you'll have to remove them with something like
rm file.ps.[0-9][0-9][0-9]
after you've faxed something.

faxing using linux?

1998-02-04 Thread Chris Keathley Keathley

I am new to linux and learning a lot very fast. I am doing good
learning on my own and reading many linux and unix books. But , my
wife needs to fax something and I don't have any clue on how to go
about it. I think I am supposed to use mgetty but I don't understand
it. I read the man pages and it said something about mgetty.info, but
I couldn't find that file. Could someone step me through it and please
keep in mind I am new. It is very easy to talk over my head.

No, stomper is a modem sharing program.
There is a solution for Samba, which involves a script on the server,
a faked samba printer which prints to this script, and a program
running on the Windows machine to ask for the phone number etc.
It works ok.

Is it called Stomper? If so, it's pretty much a DOS /win '95/NT program. We
use it at work, and it's
OK unless the modem can't connect, then you have to reboot both machines, yech.

Thanks, Jens. That's the one. However, I found that there is also
something called "respond", which you can find along with some other nice

I actually got this url from the samba homepage, where it is listed

There is a freeware or shareware thingy made by a german company that
provides a win95 client program ala Microsoft's fax send dialog that is
intended to work with a linux samba server. I have downloaded it a while
ago, but haven't had the time to actually install and try it, but I sure
plan to do so.

I can't remember the exact name and url, but if you do a search on
altavista for
+linux +samba +fax windows95 faxdriver
you'll probably find it easily.

faxing from Win 95

1997-08-14 Thread Alex Monaghan
Sorry if this has been asked before.

I want to be able to fax from my Windows 95 desktop, ideally via the
default exchange client, but via a print driver would be OK.

I currently have my modem on my Linux server running regular mail & news
transfer and would also like to be able to use a fax service without
having to move the modem connection.

Is there such a tool ? If so where ?

Note: This is my personal system, not my work system.

hylafax and mgetty both have apps called sendfax. As a result my
hylafax-client package has a Conflicts: mgetty control setting.

Yes and no.

Yes, because efax comes with a utility to turn text files into group-3 fax
images. It's called "efix" and an example usage is given near the bottom of
the efax man page.

No, because I haven't been able to successfully fax anyone with efax yet.
It starts transferring the fax and then wigs. It's probably a class 1 vs.
class 2 thing or something... but I haven't figured it out yet.

So, to summarize, I can't fax with efax, but it has nothing to do with my
not having ghostscript.

Faxing?

1996-10-26 Thread Robert Nicholson
Has anybody summarized the differences b/w EFAX and Hylafax?

I've used Hylafax in the past and respect Sam's coding and knowledge
of faxing. and Hylfax fax has a very strong following. And I found it
relatively painless to setup but I've no experience with EFAX which appears
to be the only offering in Packages.

I noticed that EFAX says. You'll need ghostscript to fax postscript. That's
fine but doesn't Hylafax require ghostscript's g3fax driver to fax anything?

Can you fax text etc in EFAX without ghostscript?
