Does anyone know what the error messages Does anybody know what is causing the subject error messages? It almost looks like the DTB is claiming a couple of devices that don't exist on this hardware... But I don't understand enough of that process to be sure. Anybody got some clues? I've attached the first several lines of the boot log, up-to and including the error messages, in hopes that they may have some information about the hardware. Thanks! You can see the thread entitled Compiler in testing dated around 16 Dec 2001 on the Debian-Alpha Mailing list if you want the gory details. If I let the system (apt-get upgrade and/or dselect) do what it wanted to do, it would remove gcc-2.96-4 from my system! This is NOT what I wanted g. I don't know about the gpc-doc problem, but I would suspect it's conflict is similar. In my case the gcc-doc program was suggested by BOTH the obsolete task-c-dev and task-devel-common meta-packages. Both of these packages only suggested the gcc-doc package, but it was enough to overide the presence of gcc-2.95-4 on my system and force its removal. Anyway, when I removed BOTH the task-c-dev and task-devel-common meta-packages, things returned to normal. The bottom line is that the info in gcc-doc has been moved into the gcc version-specific doc file and you no longer need it (gcc-doc) on your system if you have the version-specific doc file installed. You also have to remove any obsolete task packages that might call for it. I had to do some sleuthing around to discover this. Cheers, -Don Spoon-

gpc-problem
gpc won't compile any programs on my debian-System. I have installed gpc, gpc-doc and libgpc2. The Version No. of all three debian-packages is 2.0-3 . I always get the same error-message: ld: cannot open -lgpc: No such file or directory I also tried to compile some of the files in the examples- directory. I always get this message. I think what ld needs here is the libgpc.so.2.8 (?) file and tried several -l and -L options, but ld won't find anything that I specify this way (similar error message). Compiling C-programs is no problem, so ld should work. Can please anyone tell me what I am doing wrong? Re: problem with gpc
Ok. Last call for a maintainer for gpc. Almost a year ago someone else took it over and nothing was done. I am going to remove the package since it will be included in future egcs releases anyways if no one is willing to maintain the package. The fix for the bug is described in the bug archives for the package. On Wed, 10 Sep 1997, Paul J. Thompson wrote: dear all, i trying to use gpc to test my programs as i write them for a programming class i am taking. anyways, i tried to compile my first dinky little program and i get this error: ld: cannot open -lgpc: No such file or directory i am sure that it is not a problem in the program because it compiles under gpc on another linux system (non-debian) and it compiles on our campus VMS. it also looks to me to be a more system related problem. what's up? Re: about the gpc package
Look at the bug reports for the gpc package on www.debian.org for a fix . The one who took over the package has vanished appearantly. Anyone volunteering to maintain the package? gpc problems
I'm having problems with gpc. ld complains that it cant find -lgpc. I was told that I may be missing a symlink. I checked and found that libgpc.so.2 is linked to libgpc.so.2.8. I thought something must have been screwed up somewhere along the line so I removed gpc, libgpc2, and gpcdoc. I reinstalled and got the following output: Mail/ gpc-doc_2.0-3.deb mail/ test.pas News/ gpc_2.0-3.deb rc2.d/ Packages libgpc2_2.0-3.deb rc6.d/ debian:~# dpkg -i *.deb Selecting previously deselected package gpc-doc. I checked all the dependencies in the packages file and all checked out. I did recently install libc6. Could this cause a problem with the libc5 requirement?
