Yes. Sorry about leaving out the detail on the gs-esp package. My
head still hurts. :)

Reminds me to put that one on hold...

I assume you downgraded from 8+8.15rc3.dfsg.1-1 to 7.07.1-9 ??

What a headache. Googling gave no clues whatsover. Finally found the
answer by tracking several packages through the bug tracking system--
the errors have been reported by others, with means to correct them
(downgrading gs-esp, and reinstalling gimp-print).

Sometimes finding the answer isn't as obvious initially, but a real
butt-kicking hit-the-side-of-the-head when it comes to the surface...

cups/gutenprint/ghostscript problem--printing died on upgrade

2005-08-07 Thread Kenward Vaughan
Hi all,

After 2 weeks vacation I updated my Sid system as usual, about one week
ago. Since then I have had problems with printing which I have tried
to narrow down by upping the logging in CUPS. I have both an hp 1200
and an epson 300 on the machine, and both die most of the time that I
am trying to print a document (I can't yet tell what is different about
the ones that _do_ print...).

Additionally the Gimp no longer has a print choice in its menu. This
would seem to be related to the upgrade of gimpprint 4.2.7 to gutenprint
5.something (which I am glad to see, but...).

The CUPS log consistently shows a Ghostscript error:

daddy:~# grep -A 10 Error /var/log/cups/error_log

D [07/Aug/2005:13:58:00 -0700] [Job 1822] ESP Ghostscript 815.00: Unrecoverable
error, exit code 1
E [07/Aug/2005:13:58:00 -0700] PID 24899 stopped with status 1!

None of the packages I have installed releateed to this had any grave
errors associated with them. These include

cupsys-driver-gutenprint libgimpprint1 libgutenprintui2-1
libgutenprint2 ijsgutenprint gs-esp gimp-print libfreetype6

as well as others.

Can anyone give me some help how I might narrow this down?

Many thanks,

Kenward

Ghostscript Problem

2002-10-30 Thread Mike Fontenot

I'm hoping someone can tell me how Ghostscript
(specifically, gs-aladdin 7.04 (testing)) is
supposed to know where the ghostscript fonts
are located (i.e., the pathname to the directory
where they reside). Is there an environment
variable that is supposed to be set to that
directory?

Also, can someone who has a testing system tell
me where the font file n022003l.pfb is located?
I.e., what do you get when you do a
"find . -name n022003l.pfb -print"?
(Note: the final character before the suffix
is a lowercase "L", not a numeral "1").

(On my system, the above font file is located
under "/usr/lib/ghostscript/fonts", and also
under "/usr/lib/grace/fonts/type1". Also under
the above [...]/ghostscript/fonts directory, there
is a file Fontmap, which is a link to
/etc/gs.Fontmap. There is also a Fontmap file
under "/usr/share/gs-aladdin/7.04", but there
are no "*.pfb" files there.)

Any help much appreciated.

Try adding -dIjsUseOutputFD to the gs command line.

>From the gs documentation (Devices.htm):

-dIjsUseOutputFD
This flag indicates that Ghostscript should open the output file
and pass a file descriptor to the server. If not set, Ghostscript
simply passes the filename set in OutputFile to the server. In most
cases, this flag won't matter, but if you have a driver which works
only with OutputFD (such as hpijs 1.0.2), or if you're using the
-sOutputFile="|cmd" syntax, you'll need to set it.

Not clear this is what's ailing you, but you might give it a try...

Ghostscript problem

2002-06-17 Thread David Goodenough
I am trying to put together a filter for Cups to ensure that my elderly
Postscript printer only gets given Postscript Level 1 commands. Following
advice on the Cups list I creates a filter as below:-

#!/bin/sh
/usr/bin/gs -sDEVICE=pswrite -s"OUTPUTFILE=%stdout" \
-dQUIET -dDEBUG -dPARANOIDSAFER -dNOPAUSE -dBATCH \
-dNOMEDIAATTRS -s"stdout=%stderr" -

When I do this I get an Unable to open the initial device error, and gs
quits.

Any ideas as to how to get rid of the initial device error?

Yes, I have the newewst libpaperg installed: Aside from the error I get
when opening gziped ps/eps/pdf files, which I presume is a separate
problem, all the errors are the same A4: Unknown papersize thing.

One thing I noticed, in the gs man page, it lists the valid paper sizes.
'A4' is not on the list, just 'a4'.
I looked in some of the ps files and they had 'A4' papersize set. - If
this is the problem, what sort of workaround might I beable to do? Would
I have to do a search & replace of 'A4' with 'a4' in every ps file I want
to read?

Thanks,
Timothy

Hamm, bo, rex are codenames.
These are "persistent" names that will not change during their life,
while stable, frozen, unstable, Debian-1.2, Debian-1.3 and Debian-2.0
are not persistent and are created and changed according to the "stage"
(maturity) of the development.

Actually "stable" points to bo and unstable to hamm. Later will be
created "frozen" pointing to hamm, and a new codeneme will appear as
"unstable". After the release time, "stable" will point to hamm as well
as "Debian-2.0" and there will be a new "unstable" to work on.

Therefore we currently use codenames to uniquely identify one particular
hierarchy in the ftp site.
I haven't cheched, but I think this {is,should be} explained in the
README which is displayed when you log on the debian directory in the
ftp site.

Hehe, I like the name "Hamm". I finally watched (part of) Toy Story on TV

is the cute little toy piggy, and it is the code name for the upcoming

Not necessarily ;-)

Rex, bo, and hamm are "internal" code names for 1.1, 1.2 and 2.0
respectivly. Every project I have ever worked on had some kind of "cute"
code name (Debian code names come from the movie "Toy Story") for
internal identification. While this will probably continue to be
"confusing" to some users, I don't think this constitutes "something wrong
here". The reason this creates "regular" questions is that these are not
the names that are publicly assigned to these different releases.

Well, you are using debian-1.3.x, codenamed "bo".
We (the developpers) are working on debian-2.0 (not released yet),
and we haven't quite finished with that yet. So, we call
it "unstable". But the codename for debian-2.0 will be "hamm".

These names are characters from a movie I haven't seen,
but the graphics in the movie were generated in the Pixar
Studio's. As it happens, our director, Burce, works for Pixar.

That's how we got the codenames.

the people who decide these things be thinking "Hey perhaps we're doing
something wrong here ?".

"hamm" is the unstable distribution of Debian. The name comes from the
pig in Toy Story.

The current project leader of Debian, Bruce Perens, works for Pixar,
the computer company that made the "Toy Story" movie in the US. I think
it was marketed by Disney, which means it's probably available ALL OVER
the world.

Anyway, it's been a debian inside joke now for a while to name
upcoming releases with codenames taken from the "Toy Story" movie. I
think Debian 1.2 was "rex", 1.3 was "bo" and now the Debian 2.0
development tree is code-named "hamm".

It's lead to some confusion because some people use the "hamm"
links, some use "unstable", and some use "2.0". They're all the same.

Thanks. Where do I find it? And why didn't dselect tell me about this
dependency?

You definately need to upgrade you gs to gs-aladdin-4.03.
Or, use the new gs-aladdin-5.0, but that's hamm only.

ghostscript problem

1997-10-06 Thread john
I have used dselect to install ghostview 1.5-13, gs 4.01-2, and
gsfonts 4.01-3 on a 1.2 installation which has been partially upgraded (via
dselect) to 1.3. When I run ghostscript I get this:

Unexpected interpreter error 1.
Error object: execute0
Error: /invalidfont in findfont
Operand stack:
   --nostringval-- 1 (Times-Roman) 42980 --nostringval--
(Times-Roman) NimbusRomNo9L-Regu
Execution stack:
   %interp_exit () --nostringval-- --nostringval-- --nostringval--
false --nostringval-- --nostringval-- --nostringval--
--nostringval-- false --nostringval-- --nostringval--
--nostringval-- --nostringval-- --nostringval-- false
--nostringval-- --nostringval-- %loop_continue --nostringval--
--nostringva

This happens with any .ps file (including /usr/doc/ghostscript.ps).
The font name varies, but the rest remains the same.

Yes. I have fixed the problem by installing gs-aladdin non-free package.

Are you using the same paper size in your printer as the one
ghostscript (-view?) is configured to use?

GhostScript problem

1997-08-19 Thread Adam Klein
I just installed the ghostscript package, and it's working great, except
for this: every postscript document I print ends up with its last line cut
off. How can I stop this? I'm using a Canon BJ-200e printer.
