Help with X setup

Have got potato installed my system, but typing 
startx starts tvm. Which file do I edit to have startx start gnome using 
sawmill?

try editing ~/.xsession

You should just need to put 'gnome-session' in your ~/.xession (or ~/.xinitrc) 
and it
should launch gnome+sawfish for you (if they are properly installed)

try (as root)  update-alternatives --config x-window-mannager
