It is a package made by trueqcrypt, why not ask truecrypt to make a

However I remember installing the ubuntu package on debian without

The very long, very complex Truecrypt license _may_ be DFSG-compliant,
and _may_ not conflict with the libraries it links with (a lawyer might
be able to tell you). However, it clearly forbids Debian to identify a
Debian Truecrypt package as Truecrypt, and may even forbid it to mention
anywhere in the package or its description or documentation that it has
any connection with Truecrypt. Thus it is not surprising that it has
not been packaged.

The Truecrypt people evidently do not want Debian to include their

Debian Truecrypt package you need to talk to Truecrypt.

They're switching to Debian to run away from Unity (i don't understand
the rationale but...) and they're wondering why they can't some things
that they could do on Ubuntu.

This doesn't apply in the case of truecrypt since isn't available in
Ubuntu's repositories - except possibly through a ppa (although,
AFAIK, the license would preclude it from being in a ppa). So
installing truecrypt on both Debian and Ubuntu's just a question of
downloading a tarball, expanding it, and running the resulting script.

Fedora's packaging an alternative, tc_play.

The program is the same, but there are fundamental differences between the
distros. Its is the same program on Ubuntu and RedHat, but the distros are
even more different than Ubuntu and Debian, so the installation methodology
is different too. Or even moreso between TrueCrypt on Linux and on
FreeBSD...

I looked at TrueCrypt years ago, and if I am honest, the Linux
functionality seemed like a bolt-on kludge. It was designed and implemented
for Windows, and Linux functionality was added as an afterthought. Maybe
things have changed over the years, but I prefer a more native solution
like LUKS/cryptsetup.

The majority of people who use Truecrypt aren't interested in
whole-disk encryption. Most likely they want to have an encrypted
container that they mount as a separate volume. It is my
understanding that the whole-disk encryption support is much better
under Windows.

I agree though, the Linux support isn't too snazzy and whole-disk
encryption is best left to LUKS etc.
