Try mount /, do your work and umount / reboot later. ;)

After you boot, use `mount -o remount,rw /' to change it.

BTW: there is no need to mount a reiserfs read-only on boot: it won't
be checked anyway. (Not in the traditional sense at least.) Just let
the kernel replay the transaction log.

Help: I forgot my root password :(

2001-09-02 Thread Tao Liu
Now I can give arguments to kernel when boot.

I tried :
LILO Linux init=/bin/sh

but my / (reiserfs) is mounted readonly.
I can't change my /etc/shadow

so, I did:
cp /bin/bash /base/bash
chmod +s /base/bash

then, I reboot, login as a common user, and type
/base/bash

but I did't get the root right,
my UID and EUID didn't change , why?

my kernel is 2.4.7, compiled myself.

It is possible to use bootdisk, may be debian cdrom.
Boot, run shell, mount your root partition and do
chroot mounted dir passwd

Unmount, boot your system and log with new password.

At LILO prompt, type: linux 1 and press enter. This will cause linux to start
at runlevel 1 (single-user) so you can run passwd. After that, don't forget
your passwd again.

Debian asks for a root password before entering single user mode, go
with the

LILO: init=/bin/sh
# mount -o remout,rw /

as recommended above.

From
what I hear, if you're physically sitting at the server itself, you can use
something called "single user mode" to get yourself out of this mess. This is
all I know though so do some searching on the web with "single user mode" as
your search criteria. Good luck.

Brett.

get a bootdisk, boot the comp with it, mount your root partition or the
partition containing /etc, open /etc/shadow (or passwd depending on your
configuration) and you'll find a line like:

root:insert mess of characters here:11408:0:9:7:::

simply remove the characters between root: and the next colon (in this
example insert mess of characters here and reboot without the bookdisk.
your password will now be blank so you just have to press enter. after that
just change your password to anything of your choice.

There are few ways. I like one to boot: init=/bin/sh
and remount /.
