It's announced in the debian security mailinglist.

It should also teach man page authors to write decent short descriptions.
It won't.

As apropos searches through 'man pages' not commands, I thought it
should find the apt-cache man page. As John correctly pointed out,
"Apropos searches only the names and short descriptions" which is, of
course, why it didn't find anything about the apt-cache search option.

Is was my feeble attempt to teach the OP how to fish and instead it
taught me something, and hopefully the OP as well.

How do you know when a new kernel has been released (say for security
reasons)? What is the approved method for finding this out?

You could have also done:
apt-get install kernel-source
Because you didn't enter a version of the kernel-source, it errors and

Why should it come with apropos search? To the best of my knowledge,
apropos looks for Unix commands, that is the first token on a Unix
command line. With apt-cache, search is a command for apt-cache but not
for Unix.

Hi Scott,
you have a few choices:
1) go to kernel.org and create and install a non-debian kernel
2) use debian kernel 'source' package and use cool 'debian way' to
make/install kernel package
3) use debian binary kernel packages

Hi Scott,
the kernel is not something that should be updated lightly. And debian
does not do it. you have to make the choice.

Apropos searches only the names and short descriptions. For apt-cache
that's "apt-cache - APT package handling utility -- cache manipulator".

apt-get will be doing updates to your kernel; problem is, I doubt
there are any.  The kernel packages are generally version specific;
for example, kernel 2.4.18 is in a different package than kerenl
2.4.26. However, any fixes for 2.4.18 will result in a new version of
that package. `apt-get search kernel-image` to show the available

updating from a 2.2 kernel to a 2.4 kernel will be quite a change.
