I eventually got the NT system administrator to load up TCP/IP-based remote printing, for UNIX hosts: (i.e. in your Linux printcap file, lp:lp=:rp=NT_host:rm=NT.somewhere.org) They were reluctant because (unlike Linux/UNIX), they have no way of ensuring that only selected hosts /or users can access the printer. But it works just fine. Dean .. If you have Samba running, you can setup a printer interface file to handle this. I think there's an example in the Samba docs. If not, I could send you a sample from one of our SCO boxes. Works fine and since it's spooled via lp, you can control who uses it. Mike
Re: Linux to NT Server printing
Hi. I haven't tried the samba route but installing microsoft tcp/ip printing works very nicely printing from Linux to a HP870Cse on the NT4sp3 box. If you need to use input filters (if= ) realize that input filters are not run for remote printers. The Printing How-to describes the printcap entries to solve this problem. -- tony mollica [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Linux to NT Server printing
Hello Debian Land, I would just like to know if any one has been able to print from a Linux machine to a printer attached to a Window NT 4 (sp3) Server based machine. I have been able to print to the printer, a HP Laserjet 4, directly from linux using Debian 2.0 using lprng. I have also been able to print over the network from another linux machine or win95/98 machine to that linux machine with the printer directly attached. When I try to print using smb from linux to NT Server then I alway run into problems, even though I have tried all the possilbe suggestions in all the appropriate HOWTOs (printing, smb, linux2win-mini). I am just wondering if there is something particular with NT server... any clues. Appreciate any info anyone has. Thanks. John

This works fine for me. I have not tried it via Samba. --Jay
