why use a protocol that was obsoleted by an open standard almost a
decade ago? XMPP is your friend. There's no reason to use anything
else at this point; it's like suggesting that email should use something
other than SMTP at this juncture.

There's a reason called other people that use msn. Good luck in trying
to convert the average joe from Windows Live Messenger or whatever it is
called these days to an open standard.

If you can't get them to switch, that is what server-side transports are for.

They don't matter, for the same reason folks who don't use SMTP don't
matter.

I've just read in another list that pidgin from backports is working too.

Yes, pidgin from lenny-backports works. Simply add backports to your
sources.list.

Full instructions can be found at [1], don't exactly remember where
within the site though. It's been a few days since I've set this up.

Hope this helps :)

send 560116
thanks

Please see Debian bug #560116, Pidgin 2.4.*: Can't Connect to MSN
Messenger. Apparently Microsoft have changed their MSN Messenger
protocol _yet again_ -- Several clients of mine who use Woe{XP,Vista,7}
all asked me about 'mandatory wlm updates'.

This bug is available via www at [1], or by sending an email containing
the first two lines of the body of my message to [2].

[2] requ...@bugs.debian.org

I do not have Internet access at the time I compose this email, so the
syntax of [1] may be off. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Offtopic: Would it work if Roy simply forwarded this mail to [2], since
I included the commands at the beginning of the mail?

Yes, I had problems for a few days using Empathy. I resorted to trying
Microsoft's Messenger on Windows; it kept saying that I needed to accept
the term and conditions, and it sent me to a site which was unavailable.

After Googling, I found many suggestions that you need to login to
live.com and accept the terms of service (TOS) when propted. However, I
never got prompted when doing this, and ended up setting up a new
account - which then worked OK.

Funny thing, when I logged in to my old Live account the next day, in
order to delete it, I was then prompted to accept the TOS. Which then
made my old account work again. G.

I note the the TOS say you can't use unapproved third party IM
clients. ;-)
