Sure, that's why the proposed solution it simply works (the
~/.local/share/applications/freemind.desktop does not exist unless the
user had tried to do the file association before and by doing so the local
file is generated).

Just an idea...

Try by adding (you can also copy/paste) a new .desktop entry for the
program at /usr/share/applications so Freemind appears as a
selectable option.

I just tried this and it didn't work. There was already a
freemind.desktop file in .local/share/applications and I just copied it
over to /usr/share/applications/

What was exactly not working? Can't you see Freemind now available as a
selectable option? Did you relogin? :-?

After relogin in, nothing changed. If I right click on a file with the
.mm extension gedit is shown as the first application, freemind as the
second - there is an option to select other applications.

If I select other applications - either from that menu above - or by
right clicking on the file and choosing properties then selecting the
Open With tab and finally pressing the Other Applications button - the
list I am presented with does not contain freemind. I seem therefore to
have no way to set it as the default application

Also, look at your ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list and check
if the corresponding mimetype appears.

Not sure what you mean

~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list contains an entry that I have
now edited as follows

application/x-freemind=freemind.desktop;

(it previously said
applications/x-freemind=gedit.desktop;freemind.desktop;)

and then logged out and back in. No change to any behaviour.

mimeinfo.cache has the same line (the freemind only version), as does
/usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache

All looks to be right and still not working. Let's ask Google.

I've found this:

http://wiki.debian.org/MimeTypesSupport

And more specifically to Freemind, this thread:

How to properly register a program in KDE/GNOME
http://lists.debian.org/debian-mentors/2009/11/threads.html#00330

But this is task for packagers/devels, a user should not do that work to
make the filename extension (*.mm) is properly associated to the
application. I would open a bug report.

I don't quite understand this thread, but I do note that

/usr/share/mime/globs2 does define freemind as the application to

I can't see where nautilus gets its list of applications to display to
associate file extensions. That I think will be the key to this

Nautilus 3.2.1 and file associations

2011-11-24 Thread Alan Chandler
I have some Freemind mindmap files ending with the .mm filename. Up
until recently clicking on the filename would automatically start Freemind.

At a recent update this has changed and now gedit is the default
application.

If I right click on the file Freemind is shown as the only other named
alternative.

However, if I click on properties and select the Open With tab in an
attempt to change the default application, Freemind never appears in the
list of applications associated with the file, nor does it appear when I
hit the Show Other Applications button. In fact at that point it
appears impossible to choose anything other than programs in that
(incomplete) list

The help file at this point implies there is another option to find
application online, but I can't see one anywhere in the interface.

Anyone any idea how I can change the default application for these .mm
files back to Freemind?
