Well, it wasn't a straight transition for me either. I tried at least
dwm before Awesome and I'm fairly sure one or two other tiling
WMs. Awesome clicked while the others felt more DIY than I like. I think
I understood the idea of being able to tag apps and in that way easily
select what apps are visible when I choose a tag. That wasn't easy to
setup though so it came later.

It's fascinating how differently brains seem to be wired up. Awesome's
idea convinced me at first sight. So after my DE excursion (Gnome, then
XFCE, and deciding that no, I don't want anyone mounting my USB sticks
for me or limiting what I can do with my keyboard) I tried Awesome for
a while. I never got the hang of it.

Then I (re)discovered Fvwm.

I'm an old guy and have seen lots of things. By now, I'm convinced that
brains are "wired" in quite diverse ways [1], and that things like work
environments (programming languages being part of a work environment)
should be equally diverse.

All those "wars" in the hope that The One Right Way "wins" are tragic
wastes of time, human energy and goodwill. Perhaps they stem from former
times, of big armies or worker cohorts. I don't know.

Cheers

[1] Actually, my "hunch" (I don't dare call it a theory) is a bit
more complex, but for a nutshell, "wired" is good enough.

:) Awesome Window Manager here, with systemd. I used to use fvwm for
quite some time but fiddling with windows felt like work so after a few
tries went with Awesome which is a tiling window manager and mostly
decides what size windows should be.

I believe this is the power of Debian.
Got short on memory, use only a windows manager or even no GUI at all.
Want something more similar to Windows, use KDE or another complete
desktop environment.

Run all of these for different use (choosing in the display manager, GDM
or other).

And I'm using fvwm with systemd.

There are lots of choices. This is what makes Debian the "universal
operating system".

FWIW: my laptop runs wth SysV init, no Gnome (actually no desktop
environment), but with X and a window manager (Fvwm). It's not
always "obvious", but it is definitely doable. Debian's happy.

Total false statement and non-sense.

There's many and many more Debian server running without Gnome. Some of
them don't even have a video card connected to a monitor.

You can choose during installation of Debian to use XFCE as desktop
manager without installing Gnome.

There's even a Debian live disk (DVD/USB stick) that runs XFCE, you can
use this one to try out and install from it after.

https://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/current-live/amd64/iso-hybrid/

https://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/current-live/amd64/iso-hybrid/debian-live-10.10.0-amd64-xfce.iso

And even better

https://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/current-live/amd64/iso-hybrid/debian-live-10.10.0-amd64-standard.iso

The last one is without any type of desktop manager at all.

Steve.
At least Debian works better in this old Mac best of all else I've tried.
Debian is very instructive, which in itself is an argument to use it for a
newbie in IT & Linux.
BR,
Gunnar.
PS.
And level of patience, respect & even humility is a bit higher here than
the smaller, also quick response, helpsite I used in another Linux distro.
That bit is necessary for me to keep focus.

2021-08-05 Thread Gunnar Gervin
Steve,
Thx for the tip.
I'll test Devuan a bit later;
so far it looks all doable in Debian i386 Xfce i686 pae chosen (under
"Advanced" in startup) with some Gnome packages added. Cos I must work,
too, with what I have now.
I am grateful a 14 year old Mac can work as good as this does; looking
good, & solvable issues.
BR,
Gunnar
