no popclient?

1998-04-20 Thread Richard L Shepherd
I see that popclient has been missing for sometime. I have a machine with
popclient installed from some time ago (early days of bo). Just recently
it has stopped working and I see no alternative package to get either the
binary (popclient) or the equivalent (lightweight) functionality.

The error I get when trying to pop off ANY server via my (rather old)
popclient binary now is:

popclient: querying mailserv.waikato.ac.nz at Mon Apr 20 15:23:43 1998
popclient: openuserfolder: open(): No such file or directory

Now all my local mail readers work fine so there's no reason I know of why
it's not happy anymore. The only shared lib it uses is libc5 (which I
have).

Any ideas on how to fix this or what else to use?

Some time ago, when the popclient program was enhanced to support more
protocols than just POP, the name was changed to fetchmail. fetchmail is
in bo (stable) and also in hamm (frozen).

Thanks in advance!

fetchmail

And the program is called fetchmail, not popclient.
Be aware: both poclient and fetchmail use configuration files that look
very alike. Nevertheless, they are not 100% compatible.

Is there are an alternative to popclient in the debian distribution?

Is your local login name nielsen? If not, you will need to tell fetchmail what
user to
deliver the mail to. My ISP login is robmacw and my local login is rob, so you
probably
need to change your something like mine:

poll mail.cl-sys.com proto pop3:
user robmacw, with password notonyourlife
is rob here and wants mda /usr/bin/procmail -f -;

The stuff after the and is probably unecessary until you get fetchmail
working.
Try it out. If you need more help, just ask.

Looks like fetchmail doesn't know how to connect to localhost.

Check your /etc/host file.

fetchmail -S localhost will do the job in any case (I think). I have to
do this myself, because I get

reading message 1/1 (755 bytes) fetchmail: SMTP connect to localhost failed:
Unknown error 18446744073709551615

As I first saw error 18446744073709551615 I thought, I started Win NT
by accident ;-)

BTW: my /etc/hosts says 127.0.0.1 localhost

I can telnet to localhost, so I don't really know why fetchmail
complains.

Ciao,
Martin

Yes, you must have installed fetchmail package which can still be invoked
as popclient, but behaves differently. E.g. some options in .poprc file
are no longer supported, etc. But in your case, if you use -d 900 option,
you have to use fetchmail itself. Anyway, check man fetchmail for details.

First off stop using popclient and get fetchmail. The rc files are

Second if you decide to ignore the above. :) Make sure that the last

I was the one who reported the problem. Someone replied that they have the
same problem when pine is running (conflict over lock file), but I always
make sure pine has exited before I pop down my mail. It seems that if the
number of messages are less than 5, that I have an even chance of not
seeing any new mail in my inbox after popclient reports downloading the
files.
Is there some way to track this activity?

1996-10-12 Thread Simon Martin
Hi all,

This is a message I sent to the Eric, popclient maintainer. I tend to agree
with Eric, this does look more like a diald problem.

I have added the following lines to my diald configuration files

accept tcp 30 tcp.dest=tcp.pop-3
accept tcp 30 tcp.source=tcp.pop-3

accept udp 30 udp.dest=udp.pop-3
accept udp 30 udp.source=udp.pop-3

I am using pop3 and pop-3/tcp and pop-3/udp are defined in /etc/services

I have a work around for now. Instead of using popclient in daemon mode I
have generated a script that forces diald to raise the link, waits for ppp
to be activated (/var/run/ppp0.pid is created) and then runs popclient. This
is called periodically by cron

If anyone wants this script, let me know

Simon

I have just installed popclient 3.05-3 and got it working. I must admit, it
  was pretty harmless.

Unfortunately I am having problems with popclient/diald. When my link is
down and I invoke popclient, diald brings the link up, but as far as I can
see the original POP3 request is lost. Once the link is up, if I interrupt
popclient (ctrl-c and then invoke it again it connects directly to the
  server, no problems at all.

Can you give some idea on how to solve this please.

Unfortunately not. This sounds like a diald bug.

!HELP! How to avoid the mail-lock (fetchpop / popclient)

1996-09-12 Thread Marc Weeber
Hello fellow debians,

Last week, I moved over from slackware 3.0 to debian 1.1. What a
relief, really, except for one thing: my connection with the world.
Everything installed just fine, However, my mail really bothers me.

Here, at my work I have to retrieve my mail from a novell server. I
can do this by `fetchpop' or `popclient'. This is all right, but when
I'm usingthe mailagent Pine as an ordinary user, I only can read the
inbox file, but I cannot alter it: pine can't get the mailbox lock
from the incoming folder. However, as root I do not have a problem.

Last night, I managed to work my way around the problem with
chmod-ding some directories and files. But at the xx-th startup,
Everything was ruined again. For deleting my mail, I have to use W95
again (arghhh...)

If someone can help me with this problem, I would be very, very
pleased.

thanks in advance,

Marc

Re: popclient, procmail, and elm

1996-09-05 Thread Thomas R Behrndt
I had this problem when I first setup procmail with elm popclient. I deleted
the offending folder and let procmail/elm recreate the folder. Since then I
haven't had the problem.

If this doesn't fix your problem, let me know and I'll send you copies of my
setup.

I seem to be having problems with using popclient, procmail and elm together.
I've set up popclient and procmail correctly, filtering messages well.
Elm can read folders produced locally by cron, etc..
However, folders created by popclient + procmail cannot be read by elm.
I get folder corrupt, and upon further investigation, the message's initial
 form line is missing!

Re: popclient

1996-08-27 Thread Dirk . Eddelbuettel

Miro Does anyone know how to use procmail with popclient? When
Miro configured to use procmail, popclient exits saying that it can't exec
Miro a few things. Any hints? :-)

The two are unrelated. I use popclient as in
popclient -3 -P file_with_password hostname
to grab the mail.

Procmail gets into the picture via the ~/.forward file once popclient has the
mail delivered locally (which uses smail on my box). I explained the
.forward and .procmail setup in a couple of mails here recently, email me if
you can't find a copy. Otherwise, the procmail doc included in the package is
pretty good.

I think that you can do this with samba. I beleive that samba is
available as a Debain package.
