I don't know if it would be of any help in this case, but there is a
quake for linux FAQ floating about on the net (sorry, don't know the URL
- search for quake, linux and FAQ at dejanews).

As for playing as normal user: have you tried setting the suid bit (as
root: chmod u+s filename)?

Now, if I could only get my SB working under 2.1.124...

 I have quake2 and 3dfx, and canot play it with mouse under svgalib mode

 But i have a question for you i can play quake with 3dfx support as root. 
 And all
 the Opengl (mesa) things too. But i want to use 3dfx as a normal user
 What should i do?  Maybe create somthing like /dev/3dfx ??\
 

Copy Mesa libs from Quake2 directory to /usr/local/lib and run ldconfig
(as root). It wont work if you have mesag2 installed.

Quake2/3dfx

After just acquiring a 3dfx card from a friend, Using Quake2 is much more
attractive.. :)  My problem is the mouse. Since Quake2 does not use
svgalib in 3dfx mode, I have no mouse. This upsets me.. Who else uses 3dfx
with Quake2, and if so, Can you use your mouse? Do you? How can I?
