I suggest you send a note to the author of any posting you intend to put on
your web page, asking permission. Though I expect few people would object,
some might prefer not to have their email address and/or name included.

At the very least, it would be courteous to notify the author that his or her
message might appear on the web. Without this, most people would assume their
postings will only appear here, and in the Debian list archives.

Otherwise, I think it's a great idea!

Thanks.

RE: Linux Tips Tricks

I don't think people will think it inappropriate for you to publish
their suggestions organized in this way (this is not dissimilar to
FAQs or the FAQ-O-Matic) but I do think it is inappropriate for you to
not credit the individuals who wrote the tip as well as copyrighting
  them in your name.

 that's true.
 sorry it was my mistake.
 i agree with you.

I think that if you gave credit to the actual authors of the tips and
removed the (c) patoche.org from the LTT pages which are not
entirely your content I think it would be a very good resource for a
  lot of people.

ok so from the next batch on, it will be like that.
i removed all copyright mentions and I now will add authors' name
 and email by
 default.
I just hope noone will use the site to collect all emails and
 then spam people.

Perhaps if you see a tip you'd like to add, perhaps you could ask
the person if he/she would like to:
(a)have his/her tip included in your database (very likely, but it
would be simply courteous to ask first)
(b)have his/her name and/or email listed with the tip

Only problem : because i haven't kept the old emails, i can't add the old
authors, that is the ones of tips already present.
if anyone recognizes one of his previous email, please warn me i
 will add their
 name.

If the tip came from this mailing list, you could find the person's
name and email address in the list archives.

Just my $0.02.

P.S. I think it's a great idea. I've got you bookmarked too.

FAQ-O-MATIC (was Re: Linux Tips Tricks)

1998-11-26 Thread Mark Phillips

I've had a look at the tips and tricks page and it is a good effort. The
only query is about whether we are reinventing the wheel. We have the
FAQ-O-MATIC on the debian web site:

http://www.debian.org/fom/1.html

It would be good if all sorts of tips and tricks went into here. There
are already quite a number, but adding more would be great.

Also, the FAQ-O-MATIC doesn't seem to have a link from the main page.
This might be a good idea.

Mark.

Hi!

I totally agree with Mark on this subject. The whole idea of FAQ-O-MATIC is
great, and once it showed up I thought it would quickly develop. In my
PERSONAL opinion it did not quite reach it's goals.

1. I agree with Mike - put it on the main page.

2. It's quite complicated. I tried once to start a thread there, followed
enormous number of steps (username, confirming e-mail) ... and still failed.
It's certainly because I'm dumb.

3. Still mailing archive in my mind is the best place for a tip. Why? It's
very easy to use, perfect organisation, great search engine. And unlike
FAQ-O-MATIC anyone can easily contribute to the list. On the other hand we
don't want another copy of mailing list

Don't understand me wrong: I love the idea of FAQ-O-MATIC, I just think that
the project diverted from it's original goal.

One of the best FAQ's I saw was at CERN, about PAW (Physics analisys
workstation) It's a plain list sorted by number of requests. Question that I
was interested in was right on top.

This looks like a good idea, though I curious to see how you will
organize it when your database of tips gets very large (for example
over 10K tips). A search engine will undoubtably be needed...

Thanks Patrick! I checked out your site and the hdparm tip was a new
one, for me. My hd transfers went from 4.80 MB/sec to 6.90 MB/sec.
after using the tip. As your database gets larger I hope to learn
more 'new' things. Your in my bookmarks now!!

Thanks!!
