No pulseaudio needed any more! Yeah!

Great job Hans! Made a python script to automate this - hope might help
:-)

Hans, your effort very much appreciated. I installed your hacked
4.2.0.11-2. The only configuration change needed was that in Skype,
Options, Sound Devices, Open PulseAudio Volume Control, Recording, I had
to switch from sound card input to the webcam mike input.

I felt that this was nonsense when I wrote it but I was in too much of
a hurry to reread it and think about it.

If you're getting "control" from a deb, it'll have a "Version" line. Sorry.

Hi folks,

created a new package with the fix. You can get it here:

http://www.ccpeine.de/downloads/skype-debian-4.2.0.11-2_i386.deb

I tested the installation on my 64-bit notebook and my 32-bit EEEPC.
Both running Debian/wheezy. If something is still wrong, please tell me my

Hi Martin,

I don't think, there is an alternative for skype. In case of you have to talk
to skype users, you need the skype-proprietriery protocol. All alternatives
are using H264 or other sip protocols. However, I heard, there are gateways,
which let you use open source applications like ekiga or qutecom (aka
wengophone), which transfer the open protocol to the skype protocol.

Sorry, but I cannot point at the moment, where to go for it. Maybe google
search might help. i also believe, those gateways do cost a little bit.

If your friends are not forced to use skype and are willing to change, try
ekiga, linphone or qutecom. Linphone made great progress in the past, as well
as ekiga, too.

Good luck!

Hans

Download the skype deb.

(This is just thinking it through without testing it...)

Expand it with ar (rather than with dpkg).

mkdir -p build/DEBIAN

tar -xzf control.tar.gz -C build/DEBIAN

tar -xzf data.tar.gz -C build
(it could be .bz or .xz)

Edit build/share/doc/skype/changelog.Debian.gz to
add an entry and bump up the version.

Edit build/DEBIAN/control and bump up "Version: " (or create
a "Version" line of it doesn't exist because dpkg-deb needs it but
dpkg-buildpackage doesn't so it might not be there).

find build -type d -exec chmod 0755 +

If they exist:
chmod 0775 build/DEBIAN/post{inst,rm}

Make your changes to "debian/usr/bin/skype" or whatever other changes
you'd like to make.

Recreate "build/DEBIAN/md5sums".

fakeroot dpkg-deb -b build skype<...something...>.deb

Thanks so much for this. It's particularly useful for anyone
who must use skype for linux on a box with a sempron
processor. As with recent versions of flash, the newest
skype won't run at all on this processor.

The avoidance of pulseaudio is a plus, of course, but I must
confess than time has inured me to its attendant
frustrations.

Hi folks,

just another thing relating to this. I would like to repack the debian package
and would like to change these in the package:

- changelog
- skype binary

I tried dpkg-deb -x and also with -e, but I guess, this is wrong, as it did
not work (or I did not understand the manual correctly).

The repackage is needed for my own purposes, as I added skype in my Germanized
version of my own KALI-Linux build (see: http://www.ccpeine.de/?p=1152).

Of course, I can figure it out for myself after some time, but a little help
would be nice.

Is repacking correcting all gpg keys to the new version (check at unpack???),
or do only repo masters verify complete packages?

If my new fixed package is able to be installed, I think, there are other
people interested in and I will be pleased to share it.

Thanks in advance

Hans

Hi Hugo,

to figure this out was by chance and a littlen bit thinking.

Someone in the skype forum told, he installed skype 4.2 and it connected. So I
downgraded skypeo from 4.3 to 4.2 and at the first start it connected, too.

Then I disconnected from the skype-servers and tried to reconnect. There was
no way to reconnect. However, now I knew, connecting is possible, but the
server inhibits.

Now I looked into the package, the only main difference I saw in the linux
package, that the skype binary was different. The skype.conf and other files
were the same.

As I am no coder, my idea was, that the skype server just check the version of
the binary. the command skype --version told me the version, and I thought,
this version must be named somewhere in the binary.

The rest was simple: I opened the binary with a hexeditor and searched for the
version: 4.2.0.11 and then changed this to the actual version. Doing so, the
old binary behaves as the 4.2 version, but tells the skype-server, hey, I am
4.3.0.37. That way the skype server allows connecting again.

I am no coder, a real coder would have disassembled the 4.3 skype binary and
put alsa support back. My way was much more simple and more a "hack". :)

Have fun!

Wow! Wonderful! Thanks!

For my Skype version is was "4.2.0.13" at offset 0x3320. Did the replacement
and search with Okteta.

Didn´t think they would just check the version number. Which makes this an
artificial limitation without any technical reasoning behind it, no new
protocol version, no nothing. Just plain arbitrariness it seems.

I am still after an alternative to Skype which works on Linux, Mac OS X and
Windows *and* easy to setup, so it could be a drop-in replacement for Skype.
Bonus points for secure and privacy aware encryption features.
