Re: Heads-up: KDE4 hitting testing tonight (UTC)

2009-05-29 Thread Adeodato Simó
+ Jonathan Kaye (Mon, 18 May 2009 15:15:27 +0200):

Yes, but sadly 4.2 is not hitting squeeze all at once. I got about 6 4.2
upgrades today with the results that a lot of my kde apps are no longer
functional. The menu items along with their associated icons are gone:
kpat, amarok, k3b are 3 of many apps to be affected. I guess this will get
sorted in a couple of days but WHY?!? would they release packages piecemeal
 this way?

We migrated most of the packages that were available for KDE4 already,
and those available but that didn't migrate (like eg. kphotoalbum) are
to follow soon.

But for example k3b and amarok have not migrated to KDE4 yet in
unstable, so it's impossible to have them in testing. Amarok has a KDE4
version in experimental, and it being there probably means the
maintainer thinks KDE4 users are still better off with the KDE3 version,
since the KDE4 one is probably unstable.

Regarding kpat, if you still have the KDE3 version after upgrading, then
you did not fully upgrade, since it was included in the initial
migration to testing AFAICR.

Cheers,

For those following testing, this is just a quick mail to let you know
that KDE4 will become available in Squeeze with tonight's mirror pulse.
(It's KDE 4.2.2, I'm told 4.2.3 will shortly be uploaded to unstable.)

A note for compiz users: unfortunately it hasn't been possible to migrate
to testing the new compiz, useable with KDE4, because it also depends on
a newer GNOME. In order to upgrade to KDE4, you will have to temporarily
uninstall compiz-kde, or grab compiz-kde and dependencies from unstable.

I think there's something else wrong, as I don't see this problem. Yes,
k3b and amarok are still the 3.5 versions, but yes, they do work and do
show up in the menu.

Yakuake was broken however, I took the sid version and installed that one.

thanks to everyone involved! Great job, but...

... is it possible that there are a few »Replaces« missing? Like »systemsettings
replaces kcontrol«?
... is it a aptitude bug or a problem with the version numbers/epochs of the
packages, that some packages would be removed because of unmet dependencies
event though there is a new package which fits? (like kdm, kwin, ...) At least
on my system aptitude reported a lot of broken packages and wanted to remove a
hell of a lot of such packages. But I could figure it out manually, so no harm
done.
... kaboom's backup functionality is somewhat dubious? Because for me it wasn't
possible to backup some data like the album covers and settings of amarok, which
led eventually to the point, were I needed to reconfigure amarok and feed it the
covers again (form a manual backup).

Anyway, I don't want to sound like a complainer and I'm not sure, the above
issues are even grave enough for a bug report of minor severity. For me they
aren't, but I guess, that should be improved until squeeze is released.

So again: thanks for all the work! I love the new KDE and hopefully will
continue to do so in the next weeks, when I've worked with it a little bit. ;)

Kind regards,
Kai

No Sjoerd,
You misunderstood me (or I'm misunderstanding you). They show up in the kde
menu ok but the menu of the application itself (or rather the icons of menu
items) don't show up. Most apps are functioning except for the games which
don't function at all (at least not the card games).
Cheers,
Jonathan

Thanks to the upstream maintainers - first blush caught me by surprise:
I was wondering what the Akonadi server was doing until I realised that
it was migrating kmail and korganizer.

Anyway, so far so good. I seem to have lost some icons but other than
that, (touch wood) no other probs.

Thanks again folks!
