Re: Installing debian 1.2 from december 1996 InfoMagic 6 CD set

1997-03-18 Thread Bernt T. Hansen
Laurent:

To fix the broken packages add /usr/X11R6/lib to your /etc/ld.so.config
file and run ldconfig as root. You should then be able to install the
3 tex packages that break. MAKEDEV is broken on the December 1996 release.
You can download the fixed makedev package from the debian ftp site and
install it separately. (dpkg --install package_name.deb)

I put all the 'fixed' packages in a separate directory and point the
local directory to it when running dselect. This seems to work pretty
well. (You need to download the Packages.gz file which describes the
upgraded packages to make this work)

Hope this helps,
Bernt.

I bought InfoMagic Linux Developper's Ressource 6 CD set od december 1996.
I've decided to install Debian from it but a bunch of packages can't
configure after installation in particular LaTeX (and BTW lot of related
packages too...) an Pari which were of particular interest to me.

After reading carefully the doc I made an other attemp with similar results.

So I reformatted my disk an reinstalled Debian with just the default
 preselected and mc with libgpm.
(I had to do mknod in /dev to add support to my Mitsumi FX001D CD ROM but it
wasn't a problem). However there's still 3 unconfigured packages... (texbin,
psfnss and an other I've forgotten)

I added modules vfat, ppp, lp, serial lines.
I can access Internet from Win95 (for the moment I still don't have configure
 linux to access my ISP)
I can only have access to a 100MB partition readable both by debian an Win95
(as I didn't want to give much disk space to win95 I used drivespace on it
so now it' not readable from linux... but on the other hand it occupies only
 350MB out of 1993)
I've copied the binaries from the CD to an ext2fs 450MB partition

I would like to install a working debian with no unconfigurable packages but
I DO NOT wish to download the whole debian because under Win95 it takes me
about an hour to download 10MB via RTC...

So what should I download to fix this apparently bad organised CD.
If it can help, I have OS2 warp 3 installed on this machine and I can install
either Slackware or RedHat coming from the same 6 CD set in a separate
 partition.

I hope I've included enough details to get some help, but if you're missing
some informations, I can answer many questions.

Let me guess.. you installed all of the packages the first time you ran
dselect. That got me a couple of times.

So I reformatted my disk an reinstalled Debian with just the default
 preselected and mc with libgpm.

OK; now just install the packages you want, a couple at a time.

The problem isn't in the CD; the install utility doesn't quite catch all
the dependencies the first time through. If you re-run the install part
of dselect a couple of times, everything should get installed.

(The only time that this didn't work for me was when perl died on me, and
some parts of dselect didn't work.)

I have TRI-LINUX from Linux Software Labs (I believe) and I had the same
problem (with the same three packages). Everything seems to work fine and
I saw the error messages but they went by too fast (I know the
Shift-PageUp but it was still too far back).

This is unfortunately a FAQ. Someone was kind enough to write a little
document about it. Point your browser to:

   http://ece.wpi.edu/~rulnick/GlinuX/debian-1.2-faq.html

It is a list of problems and fixes for the 1.2 distribution on the Infomagic
december 96 6 CD set.

Hope this will get it right for you.. Have fun,

Cheers,

Joost
