Sorry, but I did wonder when I posted it whether I was doing the right
thing. I did consider using a 'paste.com' site but thought that the
contents would die and thereby lose the continuity of the email archive.

Could you please also describe exactly how you login into fluxbox?

At lightdm I just click on the item list for 'fluxbox' , then input my
user name and password and log on.

I know very little about the gnome family of DEs, but this appears to be a
reference to running Mate. Might it be the source of your problem?

Nope, it will make no difference at all. I have run MATE before with no
problems, so that's not it then.

It _is_ running, and you _have_ now got problems. Why not try killing it, and
any other similar references, and then see if you can run fluxbox?

It makes no difference what DE I'm running, before trying to log into
fluxbox, I still get thrown out and unable to log into fluxbox
successfully. But, I can do it as my new user added today, so its something
to do with the old user, but I don't know what.

Do you have much local fluxbox personalisation? IF not, try moving the fluxbox
config directory aside (~/.local/config/fluxbox perhaps, if not ~/.fluxbox, I
forget). Does that enable login again?

P.S.: You are starting the first line of your reply at the same quote level as
